As a person who became a Universe while watching Road to Kingdom, the Basquiat song/performance is bittersweet for me. There's a lot of history here that I didn't understand at the time... Road to Kingdom was a show that led into Kingdom. As we all know, The Boyz won the show and got to compete in Kingdom. Road to Kingdom was established for groups that have never won a music show. Pentagon was hyped up in the show as THE group to beat. They were the veterans. I don't know what's true and what isn't, but I'm told there was a lot of resentment and drama stirring up regarding voting and whatnot. A lot of people resented how the show portrayed Pentagon. There are 2 things that I know for sure. A lot of people are blown away that Shine never won anything - and the fallout afterwards started this weird paradox where a majority of people developed this sense of "Wow, it's such a shame that Pentagon fell apart after Dawn left." and dismissed them. Again. and Again. and Again. The talent and dedication were there. They could outdo themselves countless comebacks, but that mentality from the general public was like a ball and chain for them. This is what I get from Basquiat. That's what I think the song is about. And, for me, when I watch the intensity that they portrayed in the performance, and Hui's emotion when he growls out about the world's indifference, it hits me the same every time. They so so so very badly wanted to win something for once. And they didn't.

What makes me cackle about Humph! is that apparently this song became a bit viral in Korea during the pandemic and became the "self-distancing" anthem😂

I think what makes Pentagon really different from others, aside from the catchy melodies and on point choreo, is the song lyrics and meaning of the song. I think that is one of the strongest points of Pentagon. Like in Naughty Boy, it's catchy but it's about not following the norms, Like This is about continuing to push forward and not giving up. I really really loved Daisy the first time I heard it with what little korean language I know. It's started so angry and angsty like our love is a lie, it burned me then in the end it's just I wish for your happiness, please dont go, your my eternal daisy. Godddd the lyricism. Anyway thank you for liking Pentagon too!!! I enjoy your reactions so much!!!

Road to Kingdom is a competition in which seven groups(mostly unknown to many) compete for a spot in Kingdom. I believe almost all contestants you already know, they are ONEUS, Pentagon, The Boyz, Verivery, Golden Child, ONF and TOO. Pentagon were the most experienced group on the show, so they were respected and treated as sunbaenim ( the same as BTOB on Kingdom). Personally I prefer RTK more than Kingdom, all competing groups felt like one big family, they were so supportive of each other. Each group had their own colour and creative concept in each round. And as you guessed right, the song "Basquiat" was created specifically for Road to Kingdom. Moreover it was the last round of the show and the score of the song and the perfomance would define whether you enter Kingdom or not. As regards Basquiat, he is a famous American painter and was kinda fearless with a strong spirit. That's why Pentagon proclaim themselves as " new Basquiat". It was tough time for them, they were working their asses off for that perfomance. Actually I expected that perfomance to win.

"Like This" and "Runaway" are my favorite pentagon eras 😭😭 the mini albums were SO GOOD too. if i'm not wrong Like This was the first time the company let a member produce a title track (finally)

Road to Kingdom was so much trauma, the elimination of teams was hard for me. The performances were amazing though. I loved the one for Pentagon where they did Shine and Spring Snow, I watch that one and cry every time. Pentagon was like the second or third Kpop group I got into and have loved them for some time now.

Since you already watched Kingdom, you know the Boyz won Road to Kingdom. It's still a good watch since there were some great performances from all the groups especially Pentagon. Always thankful to that show since Pentagon and ONF became buddy buddy I fell hard for ONF as well. Would be nice to see reactions to Can You Feel It, Critical Beauty and if you can react to Japanese releases, Pado was actually their most recent song, Cosmo and Shh are also really good.

Sometimes Yanan is not in the MV bit he recorded his vocal parts that's why you may see subs crediting him.

I'd like to recommend you to watch their performance for songs called "Round 1" and "Round 2". It's really fun to watch, because they mocking each other in that songs😂 Round 1 is a bside track from Shalala, and Round 2 is a bside track from Humph!

I had to look it up and yes, E'Dawn was with the group (at the time of Like This) and yes, he was one of the composers of Like This. Ugh, why, Cube. Just why. Anyway, when I first saw the Basquiat MV, I went ballistic, I thought, who are these guys?? Is all KPOP like this?? When I saw the stage performance (before a member went to their military service), and realized the significance?? My brain couldn't comprehend - the members were so raw. EDIT: Jean-Michel Basquiat was a street artist who became a protégé of Andy Warhol. Many consider Basquiat a touchstone and invoke his creative genius to other artistic realms - in this MV, Pentagon hail themselves the "new Basquiat".

Yes Like this and Runaway are linked. Like this is from their album Demo_01 and Runaway from the album Demo_02. Both mv and choregraphies are linked (the end of Like this's choregraphy is the beginning of Runaway's choreography.) Also Like this is their first selfproduced song and the choreography (also Runaway's) was made by Kino. For part 4, you can check Pretty pretty, Critical Beauty, Violet and Spring snow (dance practice is the best!). I also recommended "Pose" from Kino and their live performances from "It's live" channel like "Call my name" or their covers of Savage by Aespa, Not shy by Itzy and Lovesick girls by BlackPink, they are so good !

naughty boy is my favorite title too! always has been~ theres bsides that i like more, but no tt has the same effect on me~ tire is not a coincidence, the songs came out back to back (in 2017) if youre leaning maknaez biased you might like cerberus, kino's pose (or his sound cloud stuff), yuto's solos and insta guitar videos, and also wooseok had this special unit EP with lai kuanlin a while back, his solo bsides for that were everything~ adab is a perfect song~ im not the most familiar with 20th century american artists but if you're curious, basquiat is the name of a very influential (and now incredibly expensive) black american artist in the 80s, who died quite young. even if you dont recognise the name you might recognise a piece or two if you look at them? i believe hui wrote the song after reading his biography or something like that. for humph - yanan isn't in the music video but he IS in the track itself. yeoone did his center part in the choreo in the shots in the mv at this point i think the only korean title tracks you're missing are kamioji and critical beauty(the songs between gorilla and like this), but there's more music videos (like pretty pretty and fan-favorite violet, not to mention the japanese stuff, notably cosmo and this year's pado), and special performances~ i think it would be nice to leave Round 1, Round 2, Spring Snow and maybe even Fantasystic (bsides with performances) until you feel familiar with the group~ (sorry for rambling, im bad at commenting and i never get to talk about my ults)

As a massive fan of both Pentagon and Ateez, the Basquiat Road to Kingdom performance and the Answer: Ode to Joy Kingdom performance give me the same vibes. Both groups majorly deserved more recognition- in the competition but also in the industry in general. Both performances had the same message in my eyes: f your crown/ trophies- we make our own way.
