Set Of Six was a Granada production that showcased a band ""from the world of modern music"" live in front of a studio audience. Pentangle's performance on the show includes a selection of songs from their 1972 album ""Solomon's Seal"", which was the last release featuring the original line-up.

I'm not a great one for the 'who's best' type arguments but there's not even a wafer-thin gap in terms of talent between this line up of Pentangle and Fairport Convention with Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny. Like owning the Beatles and the Stones, all I can say is that we're bloody luck to have had the both of them....

I fell in love with this band in the 60's and still love it just as much. I have some of their vinyl albums which have become scratched with thousands of playings but wonderful nonetheless. I was lucky to see Bert Jansch in concert in Glasgow not long before he passed away. He was still just as magical, really spellbindingly riveting.

This version of Cyril Tawney's classic is possibly the best I've heard. It tells the story of a sailor who has received a 'Dear John...' letter after many months at sea. The rest is self explanatory. An incident similar to this happened when we were returning from the Far East in the early 1970s. We had got back to Gibraltar and were all looking forward to getting home to our wives/lovers/partners. But one young RM had received a DJ letter as we docked. It took a LOT of persuasion to talk him down from the mast where he had planned to throw himself down onto the steel decking below. Anyway he lived another day but while we were concentrating on him, another fellow off of another ship actually did manage to kill himself. It was a cruel life being a sailor and away for many months at a time. I've been singing a version of this since the 1960s but this really is the best I've heard from anyone - except Cyril, of course.

I was fortunate to hear Mr Tawney himself deliver this song at my old folk club. It really is a bitter work, wonderfully emotional, and he gave it full power. I was somewhat bemused to see one of his songs (Grey Funnel Line) included on a collection of music from a programme about Irish emigration to America.

So good that it's a job to know what to concentrate on. You can take any element of this and get lost in it: the guitar work of either John or Bert, Danny's bass, Terry's percussion, the blend of vocals from Bert and Jacqui. Nothing for it - I'll just have to listen to it again!

@@porterhall27 Ludicrous statement, sir, utterly ludicrous. For a start Entwistle was a rock bassist in a band where Moon and Townshend were also the top of their tree in their respective fields. He was not a jazz bassist, nor a folk bassist. Secondly, in what way was Entwistle "mediocre"? Both JE and DT excelled at doing their jobs, but they were very different jobs. Thirdly - who gives a toss about "great jazz players"? Thompson is not a jazz player, and this is not jazz, baby. Cut this jazz superiority wankery, it's somewhat tiresome.

Sally Free and Easy Pentangle Sally, free and easy, That should be her name, Sally, free and easy, That should be her name, Took a sailor's loving, For a nursery game. Though the heart she gave me, Was not made of stone, [Repeat: x2] It was sweet and hollow, Like a honey comb, Think I'll wait till sunset, See the ensign down, [Repeat: x2] Then I'll take the tideway, To my burying ground, Sally, free and easy, That should be her name, [Repeat: x2] When my body's landed, Hope she dies of shame.

Jacqui was the quintessential folk/medievil singer of a generation. Control, clarity, pitch - all stellar. Plenty of singers could match Linda, nobody could even come close to Jacqui.
