Production of the 3.0, 3.2 and 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine at Mack Avenue Engine Plant in Detroit.
The Chrysler Pentastar engine family is a series of aluminium dual overhead cam 24-valve V6 gasoline engine.
For 2016, FCA released an updated version of the 3.6 L engine for the Jeep Grand Cherokee. This engine now featured two-stage variable valve lift (VVL), a cooled EGR, a new intake manifold, new fuel injectors, and new coil packs. It also features upgrades to the variable valve timing (VVT) system, an increased compression ratio (11.3:1), lower internal friction and lower weight. The new engine also has MDS like the Hemi and will shut off two of its cylinders while driving and make it a v4 while cruising the freeway. These improvements help to increase power as well as efficiency.

Don't forget to look at the jigs, fixtures, conveyors, assembly tools and the plant itself. This is where the skilled jobs are - tens of thousands of workers make this place run as you see it. These hidden workers are the real heroes. The assemblers are skilled at a mono task, but their real position is at the very end of the line. Credit to them for being able to repeat it all day. It is a grand ballet that makes so many things available to us for so little money compared to the past.

My 2015 Cherokee has the 3.2 version of the Pentastar engine. I have absolutely no complaints after 32,000 trouble free miles, from N.E. and upstate N.Y. Areas to Nashville and to Key West and many points in between. All while towing a 3,700 travel trailer with ease! The only visits to the dealer were the only two recalls, one to prevent hacking the Navigation driving aid systems, the other to re flash the transmission! Other than that only oils changes! I did buy mine with the factory tow package that adds trans and oil coolers, plus lower gearing at 3:55, instead of 3:23. The Jeep tows like a champ and get decent mileage at 15 mpg average and 28 while just cruising the hyw and 20 city!

Imagine the amount of engineering that takes place here. Development and prototypes. Manufacture and Assembly. Installation and repair in the field. All those things have to be accounted for and it all has to work perfectly. No wonder there are recalls and problems once in a while. There is so many opportunities for problems anywhere along the line. One little glitch can take 20,000 engines out for a recall. Just the engineering in the robot arm that moves the blocks is incredible. And the engineering that is used to design the assembly line. And the concrete floor. Lots of engineering here that goes unnoticed by many who simply buy a new vehicle and expect it to perform perfectly for 250K miles on less than perfect maintenance.

Engine is ok except when they put in cheap metal material in valve rockers. I might add the oil filter housing is plastic and will crack and leak. The leak isn't easy to find or fix easily without a big cost. The transmission will shift into neutral on some (like mine) The electrical radiator fans are cheap and can seize up or burn. All poor quality. The electrical and sensors are a nightmare. Corrodes and even dealerships have a hard time diagnosing and fixing inn a short time and without charging a very high bill. there's more

Although I would not want to work on one, I think assembly line videos are fascinating especially for complex machines like engines or entire automobiles. There are so many parts and things that could go wrong I'm surprised any of them work when they come off the line. I'm also surprised at how quiet the modern, automated assembly lines have gotten. It's interesting to compare the newer assembly line videos to those from the '70s or before, how loud and so much more by hand everything was back then, such as the big, noisy welders they used with sparks flying all over the place and each weld having to be done by a worker.

Having worked in a machine fabrication shop a generation ago, I remember a noisy, active, somewhat dangerous and full place with a lot of people moving about, all multitasking. We often cut corners to try and work faster, and often overlooked safety concerns. This is dramatically different. What I notice first is the very small number of people and the extremely quiet machinery. There are so few people that human to human interaction is minimal, with a lot of room for robots to move big parts around. Each person has only a few tools, hanging from the ceiling with preset settings. There is a lot of hidden technology that would be easy to overlook, with preset torque on electric wrenches, locktite preapplied, and mechanized pressure lubrication. Each task is designed so that screwups are unlikely, with connectors that can't possibly be hooked up wrong and fewer mistakes. Of course, the repetitive tasks would be mind numbing, and nobody on the line would understand everything that is going on. But I bet the failure rate is lower and the accident rate is lower, too. In the end, this is the American version of trying to keep up with global mechanization. Does it give a feeling of confidence that the US is still a world leader?

The same displacement in the old AMC straight six, would have needed a lot by now. But if you value stuff like weight, power, emissions, and cost, the pentastar really is the better engine.

Well, this actually explains a lot. I've owned 2 vehicles with the 3.6L Pentastar engine - one had a bad head and the other is quirky, but seemingly okay (knock on wood). No one at the plant seemed even remotely happy doing their job. I can't imagine what those people must be like when they don't have a camera pointed on them. Granted we didn't get to see the entire process, but I sure hope there are QC checks after each one of those stations, but given my experiences I doubt it.

You don't know modern manufacturing. The equipment does the quality checks. Those torque wrenches are all tied to a computer that registers torque applied and how many cycles on each engine. The machines will not allow a missed step. And there are NEVER at any factory QC checks after each person, corporations think that QC checks are a waste of money.

As far as the Pentastar V6...the byproduct of Mercedes bad engineering.....that V6 is loaded with issues that eventually lead to failure....very expensive repairs/replacement of the entire engine with a used/new Transplant is guaranteed. The old-trusty Chrysler 3.3 and 3.8 pushrod V6 was/are bulletproof....even the old Mitsubishi 3.0 V6 installed in a wide variety of Chrysler Products was a better engine than the Pentastar V6.....not excluding the Modular 3.7 V6 and 4.7 V8...they to complete Pieces of Sh&t !

My wife's convertible Chrysler 200 has the 3.6. I was pleasantly surprised by how powerful it is. While it has nice low end torque, this engine is more of a revver making a lot of power on the top end. Combine it with a nice 6 speed transmission, power delivery from a dead stop is surprisingly quick. It's the first automatic I've driven with anything but a traditional 3 speed + overdrive transmission (yeah, welcome to the 21st century!). It's a great way to make efficient power delivery! Great engine! Seems like one that might come out of a high end European car.

That's basically what I just said haha. I don't hate nor love the 5 speed currently. I just dislike that Chrysler purposely neuters their cash cow all in the name of profits. Many of the upgrades coming to the wrangler have been in the other lines for years. Hell the stereo head unit is essentially ten years old while were being given the Uconnect 8.4 next year thats been in other lines for five years now. Put a 45K ram next to a 45k wrangler and tell me one thing the wrangler has that's superior from a expense standpoint. That being said there's only one wrangler haha.

I have a 2012 jk. It developed a click at about 75000mi. Sounded like a lifter going bad. Took it to dealer. They said roller had come off of as lifter. They replaced all the cams and valvetrain on both sides. A couple weeks or so later service engine light came on and it started running crazy. Took it back in. They replaced all the cam phasers changed the oil again and thought it was fixed. Sometime later it developed the same problem as before running crazy and service engine light on again. Third time back to dealer they said it needed engine replaced. When the roller came off it ground metal particles off of the cam and oil pump of course pumped the metal throughout the engine. The metal was getting into cam phasers and screwing them up. I asked why they didn't replace the engine when I brought it in the first time and they said they had to do what company told them to do to it. FCA wouldn't fully warranty the engine because the last time I took it in the warranty had expired two days earlier. I had to pay for half of the engine job. I think the dealer did the best they could. I believe the problem was totally with the company. I use it to deliver mail on rough mountain roads. I know I use it hard but I don't think that has anything to do with the lifter failure. But I heard of another mail carrier with exactly the same problem as I had, unfortunately hers was completely out of warranty and it cost her over 7,000 dollars to put a new engine in. I always used synthetic oil and Wix filters and changed every 4,000 mi. I have about 25,000 on the new engine and I am cautiously optimistic. I have owned several Chrysler vehicles and have always had pretty good service until this one. I have a Caravan with a 3.3 with 150,000 and have only replaced the water pump and spark plugs. I told the lady with customer service that I had probably bought my last FCA vehicle and she said she was sorry I felt that way. I told her I was sorry I felt that way too. What do you think?
