The bright, uplifting, ethereal sound of superimposing the Minor pentatonic on the Major 7th chord is a wonder addition to any improvisors toolbox of sounds.

Nick Homes (Jazz Duets) is producing some of the very best instructional material on jazz improvisation available on KZfaq. This is real-world stuff that yields immediate results if practised properly.

Thank you so much sir, I will be ever grateful to you for your kind contribution towards the musicians like me belonging to a remote village here in India, who really have no access to a good teacher. God bless you man.❤️

A personal addition. We can use the arpeggio of the m7b5 starting on the #11, adding the major 7th, to get a sort of pentatonic with a locrian sound. So for example, if we have Cmaj7, then we can play: F# - A - B - C - E #11 - 13 - M7 - T - M3 On the other hand, if we are playing a major 7th chord with the #11 included (i.e. Cmaj7#11), we can use this sort of pentatonic: E - F# - G# - B - D M3 - #11 - #5 - M7 - 9 and it would feel like you're playing a blues scale, but raising the first note by a half tone. Note apart: We could also use the whole tone scale over this chord, with a bit of caution.

I am trying to see what you're getting at, cool ideas. Why is there a B in the first example? Is it Borrowing the #7 from the Cmaj7? I don't quite follow the m7b5 there. You said off of the #11 so wouldn't we end up with F#, A, C, E ?
@alexanderolsen3831
@alexanderolsen3831 4 жыл бұрын
Actually I think I see you mentioned "adding the major 7th" so not a #7 of the #11, just the #7 of the root gotcha 🤙
@PedroAntonio0796
@PedroAntonio0796 4 жыл бұрын
@@alexanderolsen3831 Yes, you start on the #11 of the major 7th chord, make a m7b5 arpeggio from it, and then you add the major 7th of the major 7th chord. And thus you get the pentatonic explained in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iJqCodl6mMu3qo0.html

I always thought jazz sounded so weird because the chords and shapes were weird. It's hilarious to see how simple the concepts are, it's just how they're put together.
@shitmandood
@shitmandood 4 жыл бұрын
Not all of it is as simple as it sounds and it can use weird chords and scales. You can't go from learning a pentatonic scale and then immediately perform Giant Steps.

Manley156 ...There’s the language of bebop that has to be reckoned with. Hitting chord tones may make you a competent improviser...but the fundamentals of bebop are what makes it jazz.

I have never soloed doing these eigth note techical type runs. I just play from my heart and soul and create shapes. Players are always impressed by my piano playing. I always feel they think I'm better than what I am. Music is all subjective anyhow. If I play some New Orleans blues in China they flip out like I'm an 👽 alien.

If you are an even spicier boy, you could play the minor pentatonic based on the #11. Jk, that would be very hard to pull off.

Not really, you just have to be cautious of the fourth note of this pentatonic (C#, if we would be playing F# minor pentatonic over Cmaj7). In this case, you would ensure as much as you can that this fourth note never falls in a strong beat, because all the remaining notes fit perfect.
