No, Mitch can't auto-tune his voice. That is the only time they ever used it as a homage to Cher and the first popular use of auto-tune.

That was actually autotune on Mitch's voice. It's the only time I know of that they've used it, and it was because Cher used it as a special effect so they felt they had to as well, to be true to the original.

When they were on the sing off one of the judges said that acapella club music is so hard to do with a bunch of people not to mention there is only 5 of them PTX. And they were not wrong. The arrangement of this is brilliant. As for Mitch, they have been asked who is on pitch the most and everybody answered Mitch. So he doesn’t need autotune always being in tune or on pitch. Sometimes it brothers me when people say in the comments that Kevin is an okay beatboxer but not as good as so and so. I cannot stand comparisons in the first place but I think there is a whole lot going on with Kevin that we don’t even notice but take away what we aren’t hearing and it would be a disaster. Arguably they are all essential but without our KO we would lose not only world class beat boxing skills but a world class cellist. And vocalist. KO is one of those gifted people that remains humble. T ✌🏻

Kevin himself has said that his goal has never been to be the best beatboxer with the most sounds and crazy stuff. His goal is being the best musician he can be and serve the song. He's doing a totally different thing to people who compete in straight up beatboxing. Kind of how the rest of the group do different things when in the background or the lead. It's both singing, but two different skills.

@@Gwennedd yup, Mitch explained this in, I think, a Cameo. He has great relative pitch - he knows exactly where he is in respect to the other members of the group - but i think they all have that. It's one of the things that make them what they are. But Kevin is the only one with perfect pitch.

Definitely go back to where it all began. "The Sing Off" is the name of the show in case you don't know. And you should do them in order to see how they progress.

_The Sing-Off_ ran from 2009 through 2012. Pentatonix appeared throughout the third season (2011), eventually winning. The fourth season winners were Home Free. It's best to watch the performances in order, to see how they grew over the course of a bit less than three months. Also, you want the versions that show any introductory stuff (there were cameras following them around while they rehearsed, and they occasionally talked about their process or who they were), the things the judges said after the performance, and anything Pentatonix may have said backstage afterwards. There were 12 performances before voting was opened to the television audience, a victory performance with Ed Sheeran when they won (if I recall correctly), and the cameras followed them when they visited their chosen charity, The Trevor Project, after they won, though a lot of important stuff was edited out of that tape. And I think something else, but I'm not sure what - I'm sure someone here knows what I've forgotten.

Actually, The Sing-Off ran from 2009 through 2014, but there were only five seasons because it did not air in 2012. They cancelled it the year after Pentatonix won in 2011. However, due to the efforts of Scott Hoying of PTX and others, NBC was persuaded to bring it back in 2013 for season four. It's a good thing they did, because that's the year that Home Free and VoicePlay competed, with Home Free winning first place that year. Season five aired in 2014, but viewership was down that year, so the show was cancelled again after that year.

@@theloneranger8725 You are correct and I was mistaken, though I'll add the caveat that "Season 5" was a single two hour show, which may explain why viewerhip was down.

Somewhere there may be a better beatboxer than Kevin - anything is possible - but if so I've never encountered him or her. I ran into an interview where Kevin pointed out that they drink a LOT of water (it's one of the ways they care for their voices), which means they also do a lot of burping. So Kevin has figured out ways to include burping in his beatboxing. Kirstin gave him a dirty look.

They used auto tune on that song because Cher did. Mitch can make some crazy sounds like the guitar in Bohemian Rhapsosy and the EDM sounds in parts of Daft Punk. Great reaction! Go back to the sing off. I think is is like 12 episodes this will let you see where the started it was Scott Mitch and Kirstin. Kevin and avi joined just 72 hours before the show started. It was a requirement that you have at least 5 people to enter. This would show you truly the beginning of pentatonix. And you can see how far they have come

Hi! New subbie here! Yes, they used auto-tune during Cher's "Do You Believe" but it is a nod to Cher. Cher was one of the first (if not THE first) to use auto-tune as a sound effect in a song, especially THIS song. For a long time, the auto-tune sound was even referred to as the "Cher-effect!" I love that they used it here in homage to Cher! I'd love to know if Cher ever heard this medley and what she thought of it!

For these studio recordings, Pentatonix has a genius mixer / vocal processor.. He positions the voices, filters the percussion and bass to sharpen the sound and does other filtering and, yes, even autotune to get the sound they are looking for. But he keeps the effects to a minimum because they want to be able to perform their songs live and sound like the recording.

For another good dance song, try "O Come All Ye Faithful." (Yes, I know it's a Christmas song and Christmas was last month. Doesn't matter - if you want dance songs this should be at the top of your list.) For more medleys watch any of their "Evolution of..." videos. I won't recommend "Daft Punk" only because you've already reacted to it. You'll also see some medleys/mash-ups in their _Sing-Off_ performances.

That beatboxing at the start of "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" has to be multi-tracked. No way all of those drum sounds can come out of him at once. Pentatonix does use layers and multiple tracks in a lot of their studio recordings. For example in this video they use autotune to sound like the original Cher song. It sounds like you are assuming that everrything is just raw recordings of them and that's just not the case. A lot of these songs, especially their more recent stuff, is Heavily Produced. They sound amazing but I still prefer their more stripped down and less produced recordings.

Have you ever seen them do this live? Yeah, the recording and mixing engineers tweak and polish a bit, and yes, actual auto-tune was used as an effect during Believe, but this is one heck of a banger live and onstage. Check out this Jacob Restituto interview of a capella mixer Ed Boyer, who handles the official Pentatonix recordings. This was done soon after the release of the album Evergreen (2021). kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bNWTm6ii2tHbm4k.html
