The Five Faces of New Pentaholics 1. The most common is the Mitch Slapped. Commonly found when Mitch is heard for the first time in Hallelujah, The Prayer, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, and doing Aha! at the Star Vista. 2. The Wide Eyed Look of Disbelief. Normally found when you hear their Wall of Sound. Found when listening to Mary Did You Know, Imagine, Amazing Grace, The Prayer and Mad World. 3. The I Didn’t Want It to End face. Most commonly found after listening to the 90s Dance Medley. It can also be found after listening to all their medleys and evolutions. 4. The Teary Eyed Look. This is commonly found when listening to an emotional song of theirs or just the sheer beauty of their work. Commonly found when listening to Mary Did You Know, Hallelujah, Amazing Grace, Imagine, The Prayer, Prayers for This World and most especially Thank You. 5. The What Did I Just Hear Face. Happens when Pentatonix starts strong, or when you hear a really special note or Kevin sound. Is usually accompanied by rewinding the video or song to make sure your ears really heard what they heard. Those times are too many to list, but the most common rewind at the start moment is the beginning of Sound of Silence.

They spent 5 years piecing together this arrangement and the visuals for the video. They said if they were going to be notable for their cover they wanted it to be spot on. But to be honest their version pales in comparison to the barefoot princess, who won Norway's got talent at 7 and walked her bare feet onto the stage of agt champions and stunned the world with her seasoned epic reimagining of this song. If you havent heard that yet her name is angelina jordan and she will make you question everything you know about music, arrangements and instumentation. She is a teue prodigy, and i believe they will know who she is in a hundred years, possibly a thousand. The single greatest vocalist ive ever heard. If you ever check her out id start with 'I put a spell on you" from when she was 9. Your first question will be "who put that in that little girls voice"? She will change you

The tall blonde guy is Scott. The little guy with the amazing high voice is Mitch & it is called being 'Mitch slapped' when people's jaws drop after hearing him the first time. Kirstin is the beautiful gal who looks totally different in every video. Kevin is the beat boxer/percussionist, who also sings like an angel. They guy with the dark hair & beard is Avi. He has left the group to go solo & was replaced by another black man, Matt, who also has a beautiful voice. I miss Avi, but Matt fills his shoes well. Matt is in the 'Sound of silence' video.

Brian May is actually Dr. Brian May. He is an astrophysicist. His PhD thesis a survey of radial velocities in the zodiacal dust cloud" was published in 2007 and is a popular astronomy book of the same name. He started his research in 1970 and then stopped to run around the world in this rock band named Queen. Maybe you've heard of them maybe you haven't I had to Google them. That's sarcasm. The megaphone in a prop. Mitch does not use it in the live performances. the voice you hear when they're looking at the stars is the same voice Mitch uses with the megaphone . The shot at the sky is homage to Brian May. Brian May was so impressed with the video that he posted it on all of his social media sites. The part where Mitch is lying down on the couch and Kevin and Avi are walking beside it are to represent the pallbearers carrying Freddie's coffin . The shot at the end when they're looking up at the sky always puzzled me because there are four shooting stars and I always wondered about that because there are 5 members in PTX. I read in a comment that it's an homage to Queen because there are 4 members in Queen. At least that's how I interpret the shooting stars. The moving couch pays homage to how they started. They worked on this song for five or six years to get it where it is right now. This is a link to a live version of Bohemian Rhapsody. I saw them at the Hollywood Bowl last September (along with my 81 year old landlord who IMMEDIATELY became a Pentaholic as soon as I introduced her to one of their videos; she went right down the rabbit hole with the rest of us lol). It wasn't easy getting from Orange (basically Disneyland) to the Bowl with someone of her age and in her condition, but it was definitely worth the effort. And guess who's going to see them again in Irvine in September? 😁🥰

@@WollisWorld Concerts are my thing. I saw the J5 for the first time at 4 years old, and MJ and Prince multiple times (even traveling all over the place to do it) before it was too late. I never really thought that my landlord would be up for that PTX adventure when I first mentioned it, but damn if she wasn't more excited about going than I was! 😁

@@catriverotter9527 Thank you, but I'm not that big of a do-gooder lol. We're genuinely friends at this point, and we don't really have the same taste in music (she's more country/religious; I'm more R&B, pop, old school hip hop), but PTX is one place that we overwhelmingly overlap 😁.

When performing live he doesn't use the mega-phone, it was just a prop to look good. Now a few things to know, When you saw the night time sky that was to pay homage to Sir Dr. Brian May the lead guitarist for Queen, and an astrophysicist. The 4 shooting stars were paying homage to the original band members. When they fell on the couch at the end, that represented another Queen album cover (I don't remember which one). The couch itself showed how when they first started out, they had no money for video's, so they filmed their video's sitting on a couch in one of their living rooms. Brian May saw this the day after it was first posted, and shared it on all his social media saying "Enjoy". That's high praise from Sir Dr Brian May.

Mitch is using the megaphone as a prop. When they are on stage, he doesn't use one. The falling stars represent the members of Queen, and the stars in the sky represent Brian May as an astrophysicist. "May earned a PhD degree in astrophysics from Imperial College London in 2007, and was Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University from 2008 to 2013. He was a "science team collaborator" with NASA's New Horizons Pluto mission. He is also a co-founder of the awareness campaign Asteroid Day." There are no instruments used in any videos they make or on stage, and if they do use instruments (like piano, or cello), they show it.

The Grassi Guitar does not require a megaphone. It is just a prop to draw attention to who is making the sound. I heard it done live and it was EPIC! Mitch might be the reincarnation of Freddie Mercury. Freddie died in November 1991 and Mitch was born in July 1992. He can also grow the Freddie mustache. It is so close to matching it is kinda creepy.

Scott is the bass. Kristin the soprano. Mitch the counter tenor. Avi the baritone replaced about 2 years ago with Matt. The super talented beat boxer/cellist/singer is Kevin. Pentaholics were devastated when we heard Avi was leaving, but somehow they connected with Matt. They got their start when they won a talent show called the "Sing-off" in 2011.

They are on tour right now in Europe, but coming back to the US for the summer tour. If you check with Ticketmaster, you'll get tour dates, etc. It took the group 5 years together before having the confidence in their arrangement , set and vocals to do Freddie and Queen justice by doing this cover. Dr Brian May saw it and posted it on his social media, simply saying..."enjoy". There's a couple of easter eggs in the video: 1)the couch..a nod to the first year that PTX was building their brand after winning a contract with Sony, then Sony cancelling the contract a month or so later. The group began singing , perched on a couch in one of their apartments, and posting the video on KZfaq. 2) the four shooting stars...one for each member of Queen and a special nod to Dr May, lead guitarist of the band who is now also an astrophysicist 3) the sprawl on the couch ( after the shooting stars sot) is a nod to the album cover of another of Queen's albums, Sheer Heart Attack. If you're interested, there is a BTS video of the making of the music video. It's fun to see how much work it took to get it all done in a single night with a motorized and very tippy couch, broken set furniture and freezing cold temps!

I **wish** the follow-up conversation he had with his thesis advisor or mentor had been recorded-can you imagine the reaction to this brilliant geeky dude announcing he's joining an unknown glam rock band?? 🤓

And yet...they're both famous and fulfilled, doing what they love.

Lead singer, for this song is Mitch (Countertenor). Kirstie (Soprano) is the only woman. Tall, blonde gentleman is Scott (Baritone, but covers bass when bass singer is lead vocal). The gentleman with the beard is Avi (bass). Avi left the group a few years back due to family/personal reasons. Avi what is replaced with Matt. The beatboxer is Kevin (Tenor). Kevin also plays the cello and had his own KZfaq channel in which he would play the cello and beatbox at the same time. This is how Scott discovered him when he, Mitch, and Christy wanted to apply for the TV show “Sing Off”. The minimum number of members for any group applying was five. Both Avi and Kevin were added at that point.

“Not gonna mess with it” how can you say that after reaching Pentaholic status. Upgrade for sure. Live is just as good. I know you mix and produce but they sure do have special gifts and we are so lucky to be living as they share them first time with this world. Like Queen decades ago, they give us perfection. Mitch’s childhood mirrors Freddie Mercury’s so much it is almost scary OMG as I click to post this you make the same observation I have many times, they don’t need the theatrics if most videos to hold their viewers attention. Not them. Scott the blonde, Mitch the angel in the rafters, Kirsten or Kirstie like thirsty, Kevin is the percussion who also plays cello while beatboxing, and Avi who lives in the basement with his bass though he can hit pretty high too. Concerts all the time and was just in Australia this year for the first time I think.

I LOVE that you recently found PTX and you're All In. They tend to do that to us. They SUCK us in and don't let go. Back row (left to right) is Kirsten, next is Mitch, the one who will "Mitchslap" you every time he opens his mouth! Then Scott, front left is Matt, bottom right is Avi. He actually leaves the group and is replaced by Kevin.

If you want to see acapella theatrics... You'll want more VoicePlay. I see you did Valhalla Calling already... dig more into them and you'll get REALLY fun theatrics. Might I suggest 'Oogie Boogie Song' from Nightmare before Christmas, and all of their medleys such as their Little Mermaid and Moana medleys.

I appreciate your reaction to this great video! They worked hard to perfect it (for years). I enjoy reactors that add something and understand the talent and production. Open ears and open mind. What could be better? I love it. Great music is great music, no matter the style. There are two other a capella groups you should really check out. VoicePlay and Home Free. Those two groups have actually been around a bit longer than Pentatonix. Make no mistake though, it was PTX that kicked open the doors to show what a capella groups can *really* do. Home Free and VoicePlay followed suit - and now these three groups are often referred to as “the holy trinity” of a capella. Side note: I could tell from your first reaction you really like bass. All three groups have amazing basses, BUT…for the kind that rattles your bones and blows out your subwoofer you have to hear Geoff Castellucci of VoicePlay. (His first name is pronounced like “Jeff”). Check out their “Oogie Boogie’s Song” or their very recent “Valhalla Calling”.

One of the best versions of this song is Marc Martel's. It's just him and his piano, and he plays and sings the entire song in one take. It has over 50 million views on KZfaq. You can find it on Marc's channel under his name. He sounds closer to Freddie Mercury than anyone else, and he actually recorded tracts that were used in the Bohemian Rhapsody movie. It's a must watch if you haven't ever seen it.

Others will remind you but just for starters - Scott tall, blond baritone; Avi beard, long hair, Jesus in a beanie, basso profundo; Kirstie (NOT Kristie) mezzo soprano,incredibly powerful; Mitch counter tenor, chameleon may change appearance every song; Kevin beatboxer, tenor, cellist. Avi left in 2017 for personal and family reasons but amicably. Matt lyric bass joined 2018. Band formed in 2011 although Scott and Mitch have been singing together nearly 20 years and became the Trio with Kirstie in high school. Their story should be a made-for-TV movie.

So happy you enjoyed their rendition of this iconic song. I think freddie mercury would have approved. Brian may the guitarist of queen did. Can you believe I saw a reactor actually said they hated this version?I mean I understand if acapella isn't your cup of tea but to hate this version I don't Understand what Is there to hate? And when it was pointed out to this person that brian may himself approved of this version he said well he was just being nice. Takes all kinds I guess.

This song gives me *such* theater kid vibes--like you'd be over at a friend's house with some folks and start singing an old classic, and for a few minutes you'd be transported to another world, another time... That's really what came through to me in this song, the transportative power of music.

This was a nod to their first videos which were filmed on a couch in a family basement. Tall blond is Scott, Mitch is the guitar solo, Kevin’s the beat boxer, Kirsten is the only girl, Avi is the bass - now it’s Matt, as Avi left the group. Matt did the drumming in the “Kevin’s Fifth” video.

Great reaction and breakdown of a great song. Btw, when they do a cover they do it right. Major tribute, from the flashlight scene from the original to the part where they pan to the Stars is a tribute, the four shooting stars are for the band members of Queen and for Brian May who got his degree in astrophysics. Amazing stuff. Please check out their original Sing. And when they say cut at the end keep going.

First time I heard this, I think I watched it a few times in a row and picked up on different things each time. They do NOT have a bad song...in fact there have been songs I wasn't a fan of until I heard them sing it. A couple of my favorites are Mad World, New Rules x Are You That Somebody, Evolution of Michael Jackson, and a couple of their originals Coffee In Bed, Can't Sleep Love, and Run To You. Their Pop Spring 2016 video (professional by MTV) has 3 originals: Cracked, Can't Sleep Love, and Water as well as the Evolution of Michael Jackson....which will blow you away!! Subscribed for more Pentatonix. Doesn't take long to get hooked!! Welcome aboard!!!
