Scott (blond baritone), Mitch (contra tenor) and Kirstie all went to school together in Arlington, TX. Avi and Kevin joined them just before the Sing Off. They won their first Grammy for Daft Punk. It’s fantastic. Their covers of The Prayer, Amazing Grace, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Sound of Silence, Imagine, and Shallow are incredible. They have a huge library and it’s all worth watching. They are super talented.

Pentatonix...many a'capella fans started with PTX and and call themselves Pentaholics...this group won the 3rd season of The Sing Off..Home Free won the next season...both of these groups create a wall of sound..however PTX is noted for the 'Tension & release' in their arrangements... there's no dispute Pentatonix is top draw talent...it comes down to a personal choice..most folks listen to them both and a couple others... Some of their songs I prefer.. Hallelujah..of course Mary Did You Know.. favorite by far !! Bohemian Rhapsody.. unbelievable ! The Sound of Silence..with new bass after Avi left... Their absolute most ""beautiful" song has to be... The Prayer ( best arrangement and performance award from me). But you really need to hear what they are capable of. I suggest Daft Punk Medly or 90's Dance Medly, to start.

PTX has a HUGE catalog and HUGE following. Some of their more popular videos, and ones I've enjoyed: 'The Prayer,' '90s Dance Medley,' 'Amazing Grace,' 'Shallow,' 'Sound of Silence,' 'Havana,' 'Bohemian Rhapsody,' 'Run to You,' 'Daft Punk,' 'Gold.' They have a ton of Holiday song videos and are known for their Holiday TV specials. Some of their performances can feel quite dramatic and you might notice a high production value in some of their videos. Just as with HF, I followed PTX's journey on 'The Sing Off.' As you dive deeper down the PTX rabbithole, just as with HF, you'll come to know and appreciate each member, what they can do, their versatility, etc. Much different dynamic from HF. These guys are obviously amazingly talented but, personally, Home Free...both as a group and individually, as well as the type of music they create...are my preference. Speaking of HF, you'll want to check out their new song, released today. 'Skull and Bones' with Chance at the helm. Joint project with Ubisoft. Watch the Official Lyric Video for great visuals. (I'm not into gaming but found it pretty cool.) All the guys sound awesome.

Came for the Mitch-slap and wasn't disappointed. Mitch is the guy on the round hat. His range is amazing. Subscribed for more Pentatonix. I am sure others will recommend songs, but I think you should look at their list and do any song that you have heard that you didn't like or just got so sick of and hear their spin on it. They bring a new life to the songs that are covers. You won't be disappointed.

PTX is the most commercially successful of the mainstream groups. They’ve been able to thread the needle between a cappella and pop. Lots of covers, Christmas music, and awesome originals. I think Home Free pre-dates them as a group, but they won the competition the year before Home Free.

Here's a bit of trivia Pentatonix and Home Free won the same TV singing competition show The Sing Off (3rd and 4th seasons respectively).

Great reaction just subbed hoping for more reactions to PENTATONIX which is the G.O.AT. of acapella groups. They brought a fading genre of music back to life and paved the way for the success of other grouos like Home Free and Voiceplay. Nice reaction!! Welcome to PTX!! This group is more pop genre than Home Free and sort of owns Christmas as well. (they have at least 6 Christmas albums out). There's something like 200+ songs in their discography, some covers and some originals. Members: ~1st singer ...Scott Hoying, baritone with an impressive 4 octave range like all the rest of the group. Scott will take over the bass when the bass singer has lead or sings a verse. ~ 2nd singer...Avi Kaplan, basso profundo. Avi has a wonderful warm smooth bass tone. Avi left the group amicably in 2017 and Matt Sallee is his replacement. Matt has been a fun and welcome addition to the group ~3rd singer...Kirstin ( Kirstie) Maldonado, mezzo soprano. Kirstie has a bright vocal tone that easily cuts through all the guys singing around her. ~4th singer...Mitch Grassi, counter tenor. Mitch has a really incredible 5 octave range ( and that doesn't include his whistle range). He's a natural countertenor, with a really lovely clear voice and tone. ~ 5th member...Kevin Olusola, beatboxer, cellist, tenor. Kevin is the genius of the group. He graduated Pre-med at Yale, spent months in China, has played both sax and cello at Carnegie hall in his late teens, all before deciding to join the group. Kevin does sing and has a great voice and a sweet falsetto. He still plays his cello in some of the group's videos ( you'll see him playing it in the video) and usually plays WHILE beatboxing...he calls it celloboxing!. He also has his own channel, KO where he loops cello, keyboard, beatboxing and singing. The video was shot in the Mojave Desert in CA. Since "Hallelujah" was going to be on one of their Christmas albums (even though it's not a Christmas song, or even a religious one), Pentatonix was all wearing heavy coats, gloves, etc. for the "winter scene". However, the video was actually shot in the middle of summer, with temperatures around 100° F - it's a wonder no one ended up with heat exhaustion! Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZfaq, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZfaq videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZfaq), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZfaq, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET! They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star! They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

I think it's hilarious that you said that Kirstin's voice was really distinctive in the mix, because usually as soon as Mitch starts singing, people are instantly confused about whether Mitch or Kirstie are the high notes. XD

Pentatonix is probably best known for their Christmas albums; they have released one every year since 2012 and all the albums are in the top 100 downloads every year during the holidays. But they made their early success with a capella covers of current pop hits, and have several albums with pop covers and original songs. Over the years they have branched out into classic pop music of the past, and other genres including rock, country, Motown, EDM, K- and J-pop and Broadway. They have original songs on almost all their albums, and two mostly-original albums. They are not always strictly a capella. Their beat-boxer plays cello on some songs and their Christmas albums include some songs with instruments or a choir added to get the sound they want. Lately their original songs have experimented with extra vocal processing and occasional instruments to achieve a current pop sound. Nearly everyone has experienced the blocking of the Pentatonix(PTX) videos. I'm glad you persevered and got this up. They have done music in a lot of different genres, so you should just browse their catalogue and pick what you wish. Whether it's a cover or one of their originals, it will be a treat. Any of their live performances over the years would give a better understanding of how they sound other than the official videos.

We just like to see the faces of people hearing them for the first time. ALL of their songs are amazing. The medleys and Evolution vids are fun. Daft Punk, Bohemian Rhapsody, their covers are great. Their originals are really amazing.

That was the best Mitch Slap! After you watch all the recommendations made here, to see their crazy range, watch "Run To You," and then "Love Again." They are magical humans. If want to get really fired up, Avi Kaplan's solo work is incredible. Most folks start with "Change on the Rise" which makes you ready to go into battle, and then he has a whole softer side too.

This was filmed in the Mojave Desert, outside of Barstow, California. It was around 100° fahrenheit, but because they wanted to put this on a Christmas album they were all wearing winter clothing. It must have been a very difficult film shoot.

PTX is most known for covers, but they also have some fantastic originals: "Run To You" (5- part harmony); "Thank You" (a "Christmas Song", written by Scott & his boyfriend at the end of the first year of Covid); and "Love Me When I Don't" (song with a great message, and fun to listen to!)

Their cover of The Prayer is a must see. The bass in this one, Avi Kaplan, left the group a while back and now Matt Sallee is their bass singer. He will be the bass in their cover of The Prayer. Their Christmas songs are awesome when the time comes you want to get into those. Start with O Come All Ye Faithful, then watch, You're a Mean One Mr Grinch.

You're going to have a lot more subscribers! Pentaholics are a legion and we will stay and help you down the rabbit hole. Welcome aboard the ss ptx. Weve been expecting you as anyone who listens to them cant not come aboard. There are many stops along this cruise because they have a huge catalogue of songs. If you like home free then you can thank ptx for their career. Ptx was first and when they won the show the prize for a recird contract wasnt honored bc it was felt acapella was a dead genre and there was no money in it. So ptx came to yourube and did it their way. Theyre 3 time grammy award winners, have sung ay college football championship, collabed with dolly parton and stevie wonder to name two. Theyre more diverse than any other acapella band singing rap, pop, classical, edm, dance, r & b, and more im not thinkung of. For newbies ill recommend daft punk, dance of sugar plum fairy (grqmmys both), and 90s dance medley just to start. Cant hold us if yoy like rap. Love again for edm. Enjoy

Like many of the others, when I saw your reaction pop up, I came for the Mitch Slap. Plus I knew I hadn't seen you before, so wanted to see your reaction. Subbed and liked. Looking through a lot of the comments, the one thing I didn't see anyone mention, the three in the middle in this video (left to right) is Mitch Grassi the counter tenor, Kirstin or Kirstie (like thirsty) as most of us call her is the Mezzo Soprano, Scott Hoying the baritone, went to high school together!! And are self proclaimed choir nerds. They even did some A Capella recording you can still find on KZfaq. Scott and Kirstie graduated in 2010. Mitch is a little younger and graduated in 2011. In fact, he missed walking across the stage to get his diploma because he was on a flight to LA to meet up with the others. That next day the five of them got together in the same room for the first time ever. They auditioned the following day. And as you know, won Season 3 of The Sing Off. You should go back an watch those episodes. They were amazing way back then, and have only gotten better and better as they have matured. Welcome to the family!

I would definitely recommend that you check out Voiceplay as well. A while back, I read a comment from someone that described Pentatonix as the "Popular Kids", Home Free as the "Country Boys", and Voiceplay as the "Theater Kids" of a capella. Also, Peter Hollens has done some great collaborations with Tim Foust. You should check out their cover of "The Sound of Silence". In my opinion, it's the best cover of that song.

You should try some of their pop songs like Havana, Say Something or Shallow.

They have several Grammys. They are awesome. You need to watch Bohemian Rhapsody and the prayer. Those are my favorites.

Great reaction! After you watch the professionally recorded works, you should also look at their live performances....it is insane. They won 3 Grammy's thus far for Daft Punk, Jolene with Dolly Parton, and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. They have just been awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023. Personally, I do like Daft Punk, Aha! Live Singapore (performed live and Insane), Bohemian Rhapsody, Mad World, Lots of their Christmas songs, Love Again (Their Original Song), and Run to You (Their Original Song) for the Faves. Fans have claimed that they are better Live and I am going to a concert near me in August......can't wait! Being Mitch-Slapped is an actual thing....he has a beautiful voice. Avi Kaplan, the Classically/Operatically trained bass (the best in my opinion) was with PTX their first 6 years as a group. He is now a solo artist and is a great song writer as well.
