did you catch how they had the background set up so that kirstin looked like she had a halo over her head with the lighting from outside. they did that multiple times.

Loved your comment about Avi sounding like a cello. I've often thought his tone and resonance sounds that way...or perhaps an organ. I hope you'll also check out Silent Night, live, no mics. Avi takes the lead (generally); it's spectacular.

In the beginning of their cover of “Say Something,” Kevin’s playing an actual cello, but the thing that sounds most like a cello is Avi, while Kevin plays pizzicato on his instrument.

I think another thing that a lot of people don't give them enough credit for (and you did mention it) is how easily first Avi and now Matt can transition from bass to tenor and Scott from Tenor and Baritone to Bass. That ability (much like Tim Foust who is a total beast at it with Home Free does along with Chance) gives them so much dang flexibility. When you have multiple people in a group who can sing in similar ranges, it allows you to play with voice colors/textures/tones. It's truly amazing.

Of all the PTX songs, this is my favorite. Hallelujah is fantastic and almost a religious experience. Bohemian Rhapsody is fun and a great showcase of their talents. But this one gives me goosebumps every time...touches my soul every time... Love your ability to break down a song, point out little things in the background that actually fill out the song without really hearing it. Keep up the brilliant work, Jen!

Jen. You've rapidly become one of my favorite reaction presenters, esp as a die hard pentaholic. I really enjoy the in depth breakdowns of how the chest and mouth is used for producing the different sounds, even if I only understand about 5% of it all. I'm really happy that you mentioned the "Wall of Sound" that the group do so well. In most of their tracks this is left more towards the back end of the song or as the final refrain but this one always makes me feel like it's a transition point from the introduction into the buildup for the finale. Others have commented on how the groups vocals have matured over the years since these earlier tracks. I'd love to see you go back to redo some of the latest performances and compare them to the early releases. In some cases it's just the arrangements are slightly different for various reasons but in others it's the depth of the singing. Just a thought, and it's something that nobody else out there has done yet that I've seen.

Theirs is the first version of this song I heard, and just a few years ago at that. This song isn't really played/sung in Europe at all, but I'm glad to now know and love it through PTX. I also really like Home Free's version, and ofc the version Voctave did with Mark Lowry, who wrote the song. Tomi P did a very bassy version featuring Casper Fox which is also awesome. For being a song I never knew existed my first 45 years on this earth, I sure can't seem to get enough of it now. 😄🌟

This song is such a treat, bringing forth some of the very best of PTX (self described) "bag of tricks" - crescendos, decrescendos, madrigal passages, duets with Avi / Scott and Kirsti / Mitch, and (of course) a solo by Kevin Olusola. Thanks for sharing your wit and wisdom, and hope you will find time to do one or two more before your are "Christmased out". Their official versions of "The First Noel" and "Carol of the Bells" are spectacular and I love their lovely cover of "Away in the Manger" recorded after Avi's departure from the group. All the best of the season and the New Year!

Thanks for this one, Jen. It was long overdue, but it makes sense to spare it for Xmas. One should also mention the light effects inter background, withheld light going out with the music in the end and creating these halo-like effects during the song (especially in the more „spherical“ parts. This was an early, early discovery for me when I first became aware of Pentatonix, and it’s still one of my favorites. If you haven’t yet seen it, there is a mini-doc called Recording Evergreen that covers a portion of the recording process for last year’s Christmas album for which they recently received their fourth Grammy nomination. It’s a fascinating look at the process. I enjoy your reactions very much, thanks. Peace from Ohio …

I think you'd appreciate their Carol Of The Bells, it really is one for the music nerds! :) O Come All Ye Faithful, God Rest Yet Merry Gentlemen, and 12 Days Of Christmas are brilliant and so much fun; for close harmonies, I recommend Silent Night, either the official video from 2014 or the audio of their most recent version that features the King's Singers (not sure harmonies can get any closer... :)).

What always amazes me about the trio--and Avi to a lesser extent, particularly in this song--is how they can have such a similar timbre at times (an issue with many sibling bands because their voices aren't distinct enough from each other) yet so different as well that you can always pick out every part with every note. Listen to them enough and you no longer ask, "What... who just sang _that_ note?!" A perfect example for me is the the full "Work it harder, make it better..." section of _Daft Punk_ where you almost cannot tell who is singing each word as they scatter through them, but then break away from that and everyone is distinct again.
