AD/ANZEIGE: In this episode, Jules and I share our first impressions of the Pentax 17, one of the most anticipated cameras in the film community. Ever since Ricoh Imaging announced the Pentax Film Camera Project in December 2022, the film community waited for this pivotal moment. A newly introduced film camera tailored to today’s needs and produced with today’s manufacturing capabilities.
The anticipation now culminates in the launch of the Pentax 17, a 35mm half-frame camera with manual film transport, manual zone focusing and automatic exposure. The bright, large viewfinder lets you compose in portrait orientation - which is common for half-frame cameras but is also a deliberate choice as it matches today’s social media formats and how content is often consumed on a phone. So the 17 in Pentax 17 is derived from the 17x24mm dimensions of the final frames. The obvious side effect and benefit is that one regular 36-exposure film roll gives you 72 exposures which helps counter increasing film costs - just like it did in the 1960s when the half-frame format was originally introduced. We had reviewed the Olympus Pen from 1959 and the world’s first half-frame SLR camera, the Olympus Pen F from 1963, here on the channel before.
Back to the Pentax 17. When we started this KZfaq channel about eight years ago, I would have never thought to see the launch of a brand new film camera. So I was truly excited about this camera and giving it a try. Pentax reached out to us asking whether we would like to give it a try and provide a first review. You can only imagine how excited I got about this opportunity. I took the camera with me on a trip to Mallorca shooting some Kodak Gold 200 and Ilford Delta 100. Jules and I also took it through its paces during a photowalk in Landsberg am Lech and Munich shooting some slide film. Let’s take a closer look at its features, the build quality, the images it produces and our personal impressions and findings.

I've been wondering what this would be selling for on eBay if it had these specs but was from the '90s. I reckon £300 easy (mju2 goes for that, and is less auto), so brand new, £500 is definitely fair.

Too many of the others seem to fall into two categories: Either the host doesn't really know what he's talking about, and hasn't even read the instruction manual, or he's much more interested in putting himself on display hoping to be found witty and cool.

Personally for me this is a design masterpiece with so many small details that are so well thought out. The balance between getting back the tactile feel of using a film camera with making it easy for beginners to enjoy is very good. Price maybe bit on higher side for some but i feel this will still sell very well. Many markets in Asia, Africa etc. do not have access to good quality second hand markets and it will be great for them especially. Hero of this camera is the lens which is producing such great image quality. This is one thing that makes the value worth it along with the build and having a new camera.

As usual, great review. Also, as a longtime Pentax and Leica shooter, I can honestly say that Pentax build quality and attention to details is second to none. While I don't have much interest in a 1/2 frame camera, I'm hoping that Pentax will take a look at their excellent ME Super (my No.1 film camera) and use that as a template for their next build. Another great review and a powerful rebuttal to all those who have pre-judged Pentax's effort (Why half-frame?...So expensive...) and in any case, wouldn't be satisfied until Nikon re-issues the FM3a. Having said that, I think Pentax/Ricoh's marketing department will have its work cut out selling the 17 to a new generation of film-photographers who haven't been taught to recognize quality workmanship or that quality is something they need to be prepared to pay for.

I have 40 vintage cameras, 10 have failed in some manner. Someday all will fail so thankfully companies like Pentax are keeping film alive. Regarding 1/2 frame being a bad thing, this is mirrorless all over again. How long have we heard the argument “they aren’t as good as full frame, I need full frame to get good pictures”. The Pentax 17 is a perfect size travel camera, have you ever tried taking a Nikon F4 on holiday.

I'm very glad to see your thoughtful and well-researched review of this camera. Many talking heads have spoken flippantly about the lens, the body materials, the half frame format, etc. No names mentioned, but I lost respect for quite a few KZfaqrs over this review. On the other hand, your logical review, and that of other thoughtful people (i.e. Luigi Barbano, TheDarkroom and a few others). This camera looks fantastic. While the half frame is my only personal issue, this is a no-brainer recommendation to a majority of casual shooters who just want to save the jpegs to their phone and share them online. Great points on price- this is more than fair and more competitive than what some of our favourite vintage cameras went for upon their own retail release. Between this and the Mint camera coming out soon, it is an exciting time and I hope as many people as possible support both.

Thanks for the honest review. I am waiting for the Rollie 35AF from MINT. A pass for me on this Pentax despite its well made and good ergonomics. My 35mm Contax IIa and Voigtlander R2C are about the same size as this. Half frame would mean I need to wait longer for the result and TriX film would look really coarse. Wish Pentax had brought back the PC35AF. I still have mine from the 80s somewhere in the closet.
@igssilva
@igssilva 6 күн бұрын
The PC35AF has a lot more technology in it than the new Pentax 17, with AF focus, 5 element 2.8 full frame lens, faster shutter, and smaller form factor. I can't even imagine how much it would cost to launch a camera with those specifications now on the market.

It’s definitely tempting, although I don’t think it’s for me right now. I’d love to see them do a half-frame SLR with a more modern camera battery and similar electronics to this one, but offering the full set of modes as well as the assists. I think that’d be amazing. And then they could go on to do the fully mechanical SLR for the people who want that. I think you’re right to mention that the price is actually very reasonable considering the financial and time investment that has gone into such a huge undertaking. I was a little bit surprised when I first heard, but that’s why you should always try to sleep on these things before you react. The chances are that you’ll change your mind very quickly from that first snap reaction.

About the price, it's amazing Ricoh have reached this price point for something new. Looking at 1970 prices for half frame cameras like the Canon Demi 28 and Olympus Pen EE2 and taking into account inflation the cost of the Pentax 17 falls in between these two. Hello and thank you for another excellent and thoughtful review. I'm fascinated by this new film camera and the design philosophy behind it. Pentax must be commended for this significant commitment. As far as the price, it's similar to a decent entry level digital camera or phone so no more needs to be said on this matter. I have an Olympus Pen S and a Canon Demi ee17 and the image quality of the Pentax 17 appears to be as good or better, therefore excellent. Regarding the default vertical frame, this is a non-issue as the user automatically adjusts in my experience. I don't even notice doing this on my Fujica GS 645S. I sincerely hope this new film camera is a success for Pentax and a joy to use for the new owners. Regards. Paul.

I kinda wish it was 21mm instead, since the “full frame 31mm” field of view is such an iconic Pentax field of view, but I still bought one. It got here yesterday and I’m just waiting for the rain to stop.

I agree wide is good for a snapshot camera (especially one that is zone-focus). 25mm is historically about as wide as half frame cameras got iirc.

@@mynewcolour For me, I find a lot of meaning in the famous Pentax FA 31/1.8 Limited (which I don’t have) and its smaller cousin the APS-C DA 21/3.2 Limited (which I do). It’s just such a Pentax focal length, iconic in its history. But I suppose that the Ricoh Auto-Half has history worth referencing, considering that the company is Ricoh/Pentax.

Nice and fair review. Already ordered one; waiting availability and shipping. Only complaint I see coming is one minor thing, the texture on the rear of the camera does not match the leatherette texture on the front. Picky complaint for sure, but it makes it look like the camera was built with spare parts from another design.

Great knowledgeable review. You and Jules certainly showed what it can do re quality. In comparison to modern digital cameras it’s a bargain price for a beautiful film camera. And in comparison to the “older vintage cameras “ when first released again again it’s good value. A new camera also and very importantly comes with a warranty. If something goes wrong it’s fixed /replaced etc etc. You don’t need to buy it and then spend hundreds having it CLA’d as is often the case with a vintage camera. Let’s hope it’s a big success and it opens the door for further Pentax releases.

Thanks for the very honest review of this camera. Love that Land Rover Defender photo! Where you located? I love you are as passionate as people developed this camera! I think pricing is pretty good! People buy this camera will be supported at least next 10 years of Pentax repair and spare parts support! As I am deeply working with Pentax past 30 years of my life. This is one of happiest time of my life with PENTAX! Enjoyed your video!

Thanks for this review. I think Pentax shipped these out to every sigle Film photography youtuber around. I realy appreciate this effort both by Pentax and you. As a member of that new generation of film camera users I think it's a very coherent and beginner friendly product with the film saving and social media oriented half frame format. I also value your discussion on the price which most other reviews simply ignored, although I mostly disagree: Even though 550€ might be a reasonable price for what it cost Pentax to develop and manufacture this camera. it is way too expensive for the average teenager or twenty-something who just casually shoots some film but isn't a hardcore photography nerd. Knowing alot of people like this the Pentax 17 has to effectively competes with older consumer grade cameras that sell for ~25€ or old consumer grade SLRs that are also much less expensive. I don't think the the Pentax 17 becomming a commercial success among it's intended target audience and I do see the danger of it's potential commercial failure used as "proof" that new film cameras just don't sell and kill future projects. Considering the curerent market of vintage pro equipment a 120mm viewfinder camera would have been a safer bet I think, but let's hope Ricoh already has more cameras under development. Maybe the consumer grade model came first to get the machinery going again, before they do cameras for more picky enthusiasts.

Great review! Would you say you have to be willing to change your habits in favor of more vertical shots with the Pentax 17 or it’s also suitable for mostly horizontal shooters? I’m talking about a potential discomfort in always having to turn the camera sideways, in terms of stability in the hand, etc.

So impressed...well, surprised and impressed, really...at the sharpness of the shots at max focal distance. And with 1/2 the negative size! Thanks for your review. I appreciated your take at the end, as well. It was a good reminder for me.

Excellent review and analysis. I hope this is the first of more film cameras from Pentax. I admit that I wouldn't buy this model one simply because I don't like portrait mode. If they were to follow up with a full frame in landscape mode, then I most certainly would buy one.

Nice review! Looks to take good images this camera. Hope many buy it and Pentax get chance to make more models. I completely agree with the points on prize. Especially since, you might buy an old camera that is said to be in working order, only to find you have to repair it.Getting equipment needed and the time you invest in doing the repairs are more than the price of this camera. I recently repaired a Olympus Pen (original version) and while I enjoy it, it doesn't have all the features of this half frame, so you have to know what you are doing to use it and you also need an external light meter which also costs money.

Thanks for the review! I very much agree with you on the price point, although 550 € is still a lot of money, even if there are good reasons. I had the camera in my hands at our local analog camera store here in Hamburg which had a nice little promo event. What I found a bit unfortunate (something also mentioned in many videos about the camera) is that the back received a little less intention. The overall look of the camera would be more refined if they had given the back the same surface as the front. (In German I'd say, "Sie wäre insgesamt runder von der Optik"). All in all, I really appreciate the effort by Ricoh PENTAX to go forward and get out this camera

The announcment of this camera got me thinking that I would like to have a film camera to compliment my Olympus E-P7. I was gifted an Olympus Pen EE-2, and it is in great shape. I just shot my first roll of film since I was a kid. I just hope the photos turn out decently! The half frame appealed to me as a way to save money on film, and it does inspire me to take the shot differently than I would usually due to the orientation and fixed focus.

The primary reason people rarely compare modern digital cameras with older models is that 90% of them either don't last a decade or become completely outdated within 10 years, making such comparisons impractical. In contrast, the film community can appreciate that comparisons between old and new film cameras are still relevant.

Moreover, budget is never a priority for vintage car collectors. Many of them also own modern vehicles, including electric ones. It's not that new film cameras are too expensive; it's just that old cameras are too cheap because there are no environmental regulations to recycle them, resulting in a large supply. I'm sure the market will eventually address this issue as many legendary cameras continue to be neglected.

This is going to be a tricky venture. It's going to be a gamble for everyone with the upside being that film ecosystem gets more love, cheaper prices and more options. Hope Pentax 17 is a success.

Considering the press release from two days ago - Pentax is basically "sold out" and recieved so many preorders/orders they are doubting their ability to fill them. Mine arrives on Wednesday, and I am excited to use it as it fills my "everyday pocket point-and-shoot" want. I have quite a few film cameras, but find a high quality, reliable & fun to use point and shoot is difficult in the film world.

Great review and the one I have been waiting for. As for price, I'm someone who can and has sourced used cameras. Sure I can find something cheaper. But a new camera that I can depend on, has a return policy, and a warranty still appeals to me. I also find that since it's a 'point and shoot' and is half frame to be complementary to my other cameras - it is offering something I don't have. Happy to hear that sales have exceeded expectations and that the first batch is already sold out. It speaks to the desire of new options for film users.

Great review guys :) As always well measured and thought through. Also a greta point considering the price point etc. And like you say i do agree with that us more "advanced" in our photography journey has to think about helping out here and add our effort to the community with trying to help hype this product and maybe also buy it to support this heartfelt project Pentax has created for us and everyone else. Sure it wouldnt be my first choice of what i would put into a camera (half frame etc ) and maybe not the frist camera id look for used. But it looks beautiful and well built and the photos i have seen from it looks very good and promising in my opinion. I am also looking forward to the Mints Rollei 35 AF of course and its more my style of camera i would love buying, but the price there will be higher still from what i understand . But lets hope the community and maybe most of all new and young photographers like and want these cameras so that this community grows and does not only contain us "old kooks" but a new and healthy base of people that love and want to sustain film photography :) Thank you, regards Martin.
