Thank you for making this video. I watched this 12 years ago and it made me laugh and smile and go out and buy a Q7 then a spare as I knew they stopped making them. Your enthusiasm and unique sense of humor brightened my day and little did I know that I would call on this video again to lift my spirits and give me a reason to laugh and smile. You see I was involved in a house fire and was in a hospital bed for quite some time hoping that I wouldnt loose my right hand and foot. I watched your video again and said if I am ever able to walk and hold a camera again then I will visit asia (Philippines) with that little camera and another for video and when I got well enough to walk again that is exactly what I did. So I know you will never meet me but I just want to thank you for giving me a little hope in my future and that little camera and your being who you surely made a difference to me.

I have all 3 Q's. A purple Evangelion Q10, a light purple and pink Q7 and a white and yellow Q S1. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these cameras!!!!!!

@Blunty3000 For most people. We only buy a new camera when the old one breaks. Can you assemble a nicely priced set cameras that will last and NOT be out dated in 6 months. Kind of budget and quality minded but centered for longevity and quality mostly.

Great job on the review... I want to replace my trusted but not so small Oly c8080 as my carry around. I'll be looking at this closely.

I totally agree. I have 5 canons from crop to full frame including the G15... I LOVE MY PENTAX Q... It's so flexible and so cute!

@TheEigengrau I agree, most people don't have a $600 to spend on a camera, my budget for a camera, is usually no more then $200USD or so.

Love the video, always admired the Q. It's weird and people might not get it, but it's a genuinely nice camera to shoot with, which is something Pentax are very good at from my experience. Your voice reminds me of the guy off the Buzz video games...

I'm actually looking to buy this camera in 2020.

(part 2 since I suck at youtube) The sheer sounds, clicks, snaps and movement of the prime lenses is just so dogon sexy! The thing is, I'm on a super low budget, and want to buy a digital camera which will be as close enough as possible. I'm thinking of either a used d80, d90, pentax kx or k200d ooooor a pentax Q which you seem to fancy so much!

I'm taking my Q to Europe with a couple of lenses and I got warm and fuzzy memories of your videos. Classic Blunty!

@ratys19 Seems like the main reason for that though was its high pricetag & limited lens choices - if it were half the price (around $400-500) it would've been treated a lot more fairly I think

Excellent, excellent review. You briefly talked about cameras video capabilities, how well it does up-close video in low light environment, think tabletop review. Also, will it shoot video in macro?

Best fun I have had as a Photographer. Amazing little camera that punches above its weight.

Just couldn't resist it and order one. Love my Pentax K-r but I hate to take pics one the way with my Iphone 4. Thats why smartphones can't replace real shoot expirence.

@MsHumaEnglish I'd be more worried about the cost of the Ricoh lens+sensor combos and if you go with the Leica mount, you'll be paying some serios dosh on those lenses too

@hezzart Most shots exhibiting a shallow DoF were indeed the "standard Prime 01" (the 47mm equiv F/1.9) ... but there are a couple from the Zoom too.

@martinthew You, and me both, as I've recently had to get a new cell phone, cause I dropped my old phone one too many times, and damaged the outer screen(old cheap moto flip phone), it was time to upgrade anyways lol!

ps i had a q delivered from amazon.co.uk yesterday for £250 with the 01 prime! looks and feels great! took 60 odd pics as a quick test and they looked great! i hate the size of slrs and my sony nex5 is smaller but useless in being user friendly control wise! looks like im gonna agree totally with you! Quality,size and great flexibility. for my untrained but not totally amateur eye the images out of this are more than adequate for my needs! Well done Pentax,now can we have some lenses please!

@clays121 1. I'm not sure about camera prices in America, but the equivelant $200US would buy you a pretty shitty camera here in Australia...you get what you pay for. 2. Does it matter what other people think when you're snapping photos which bring you enjoyment? Not to mention that it's not designed for photoshoots. As Blunty said, some people just won't 'get it'.

this is actually a good system, with the 47 prime, telephoto zoom 2.8, and a to be announce wide prime (not the toy one). I just need a fast af and a pre-af for street photography. this would be my next grd hahaha blasphemy! :)

Greetings kind sir! I'm in a bit of a dilemma, would like to hear your opinion on it. I' short on cash most of the time (who isn't...), but I love shooting analog and don't even own a digital camera. I am, however about to get one, since I need a digital backup, especially since I can't afford to buy and develop films as much as I like to take photos just for the fun of it. And taking photos with film cameras is fun on it's own even if the results are crappy. (part 2 following)

This is a great review - I love the style! I recently bought the Q7 with the 02 lens and the 07 Mount Shield Lens. It's a really fun camera and great for all the reasons you give here. I went with the Q7 because the newest version, the Q-S1, is apparently not as enjoyable to use and the former was on sale here in Tokyo for a song. Anyway, I agree with everything general you say here and really learned some useful specifics. Thanks!!!

Hi Blunty, greetings from Argentina. What are the reasons that the Pentax Q is not recommended for wedding photography? I mean, the image quality is not bad, it's has a hot shoe, a decent AF and two zoom lenses f2.8 like the 02 lens and the new 06 lens.

@MrNDUDE16 Zero. I don't do "cash for comment" and if you think I do, you can just fuck right off. And as a matter of fact, this isn't even a borrowed review unit like I often get, It's mine, I paid for it from my own hard-earned. In fact, I never had any contact with Pentax or the Aussie Pentax distributors AT ALL until weeks after I purchased it when I was well into producing this review, and even then it's only because they noticed me tweeting about the camera.

I know, camera doesn't make a photographer, but I need something which will allow me to do what I please, focus what I wan't and in speeds which I prefer, with as many of mechanical movements as possible (zooming with a prozumer? Hell no!!!). So, the Q is obviously a winner because of it's size but can it's tinny senzor pull of some bigger prints? Mind you, I would love a fujifilm x100 but the bastards price is just not going down! Thanks and sorry for clogging up the comments!

You are so fun to watch review cameras!! I remember when I first watched this video when it came out, I sure wanted one of these little cameras!! It's about 10 years later and I just ordered one on ebay yesterday and it's on it's way from Japan!! Woohooo! I can't wait to get going with it! I have the Pentax auto 110 which is I think about the same size, I can't wait to see them sitting next to each other. I plan to carry the Q around for a daily cam, get back to some street shooting! :)

Just ordered! I will be taking a photography class, and I have a Minolta x-700 SLR to learn on, but I wanted a DSLR camera to replace an Olympus e-420 I had. However, after researching these compact mirror-less SLR's I went with this Pentax. Can't wait till it arrives!

I got a Q-S1 and it was fun, I got some vintage Bolex lenses to go with it. Later an Olympus OMD EM10 II was gifted to me and it's amazing... But I find myself wanting to use the Q-S1 more often. The EM10 feels like it's doing all the work, I appreciate the Q making me work for the pictures, it's more satisfying specialy with the vintage C and D mount lenses.

Thank you Blunty for the wonderful review of the Pentax Q. I fell in love so very much with my first Pentax Q with the Fish-Eye lens that I eventually went and got a second one which has the 05 Telephoto that was sold separately.

Simply curious, between the Nikon V1 which is barely showing up here in the states, what kind of price range does the Pentax kit fall into? I would love a highly mobile alternative as opposed to carrying my DSLR around which has gotten the nickname of "The neck breaker" and that's without my camera bag of optional lenses, hoods, etc.

Okay, what's the thing with these "toy" lenses? Novelty? Or do they have some sort of place in the lineup?

This is quite possibly the first camera that I've gone "W.O.W!" After viewing your gallery on Google+, I've now got this twitch that just won't go away, thanks to your review of the Pentax Q. The quality/sharpness/aperture and everything else has quite possibly turned me away from getting a DSLR and going towards this perfect EVIL camera. Hey Blunty, I loved your review but how is it durability wise because I would love to get one if it can be tossed about a bit.

@MrCazman123 I tested it, had zero issues... but truth be told, Exceptfor the occasional need to use it as a fill light, I almost never use on camera flash... or even off-camera strobes really. I like working with available light mostly. Have been meaning to give some strobe techniques a try though.
