I watch a lot of podcasts, but whenever I try to give yours a chance, I find myself getting rubbed the wrong way. The way you question and address black issues comes across as condescending, patronizing, and insensitive. It seems like some things never change. You ooze such lack of sympathy its palpable. 🤔 It is in the white mans interest to keep the black man where he is. When the black man adopts the ways of the white man, the black man will forever stay where he is, which is exactly where the white man wants him to be. White people did us dirty. Black people doing other black people dirty because of the dirt of the white man. Bra Penuel it is so simple. It is easy to spread hate/competition in the townships cos we too close to our neighbors. Imagine a stack of matchsticks, light one & they all burn, that is how black communities are destabilized. We will make more progress the day we all spread out kancane, we don't need to have a "Joburg" in every province.

Grew up in joburg until 2004 moved to Cape town and just moved but to Joburg 2022 all i can say Cape Town is very divided.. N2 R300 and N1 .. these free ways Means Poor class, Middle class and high class.. as a black to Drive a Maserati or Porsche you must be nigerian.. our People are trapped to be not easily exposed to knowledge of inspiration.. you are found walking in Constantia or Knewlands you are escorted out as a black person.. it’s sad.. that Whites, Coloureds and Blacks are so very divided from each other.. Where as in Joburg it’s different..

"What's wrong with the Cape Town" ... the structural violence is deeply entrenched in Cape Town, making the barrier to entry that much harder. Sadly a lot of people choose to leave Cape Town which maintains the status quo...lack of exposure to black success is by design, it's kept far away, few in townships, working class young black professionals can mainly afford living far away from the city and I understand why they leave because everything seems like a constant struggle...that's exhausting... the ripple effect of all of these things and more make a lot wrong with Cape Town and it needs a lot of us to do the work.

I can fully attest to the guest's sentiments about not being "seen" in Cape Town. I've only being living & working here for just under a year & my experience is that Cape Town is no place for black people to thrive - here a black person is not only not seen, but infantilized & one's dignity & sense of self worth is eroded on a daily basis. I have decided to leave this place & will start my life from scratch, from the bottom of the food chain in my home province, with the little sanity I have left.

I have a question for Slim I do not know if he is able to answer this question but the question can also be for you Penuel. Gathering from the conversation confidence is something that needs to be practiced so I want to ask what are practical ways that a normal person can do on a daily basis to improve their confidence?

Hey Thato, firstly thank you for checking out the episode. I would say a good way to start working on your confidence is by working on self development, and that starts with really getting to know yourself. Maybe even write a list of things that things that affect your confidence and make it a point to work on those things and learning to embrace them. I hope this helps 🙏🏾

Thanks for the chat! Great insights. I only disagree with Slim's idea of relocating people from Cape Town as the sole solution for hope. My advice is to collaborate with local entrepreneurs in Cape Town, like SirVince who recently launched Therapy restaurant on Kloof Street, or Luvuyo from the Silulo Foundation. Building partnerships with existing talent can uplift the community more effectively.

Humblest opinion...I think we should avoid making statements like "blacks never built infrastructure in south africa"... That statement is loaded with presuppositions and conotation of black identity and ability. Fact is we would build roads if the narrative puts blacks controling. We are the financialy marginalised but all infrastructure was built by black hands toiling as labourers etc.

I agree with Buntu, there is just something about Cape Town, almost like its in the air. Limitations you can`t really admit to because they are subtle in nature. A sort of "accepted" discomfort. Black success is only for the few, "the brave ones", high risk takers and the "YES BAAS".

Why do so many black people not feel included in Cape Town? Why are the majority of black people in CT struggling to move up financially like black people in places like Joburg and Durban? Is it structural? Is it just the mindset of the black people there? Is it because progressive black ppl leave CT instead of building there?

I am from Cape Town and we are theee most marginalised people ever!! Everything here is for either white or coloured because they dont regard us as part of 'their' Western Cape or cpt. I actually think about this almost everyday Penuel and it upsets me. When people think cpt they think coloured and never us, why??? This is a big topic and fitting for heritage day, it needs a whole panel with different people's experiences and cos sana its deeper than we realise.

@@iprofox3758 Coloured is a culture. Historically it's culturally of core Asian origin. Cape Town, a port city, was the heart of the old Cape Colony. Natives were ethnically cleansed and chased beyond the expanding Eastern frontier (became the native reserve). Labour was imported from Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) including of Chinese, Philipipino, Malay, Indian etc. extraction & other places like Madagascar & Mozambique, into the colony. The native reserve people & people from inland also became Cape Colony labour. This led to the Asian core culture & Africans in one domain and admixture. Particularly in 20th century, many Afrikaans-speaking Africans classified as Coloured for 2nd Class treatment instead of 3rd class (native) with the compulsory Population Registration Act. It was then that statistically the Coloured label became far more genetically African, though culturally still with a lot of the historically-evolved colonial hostility toward the native "enemy of the colony".

Cape Town's social, economic & spatial architecture. It's the heart of an old established colony, with a "filled" establishment. Its entire history was ethnic cleansing, keeping natives who were not willing to be subservient labour or political troublemakers beyond the frontier in the native reserve in the East., while also drawing its continual labour from that reserve for centuries. Black life in CPT feels unsettled. And among people of colour, the highest concentration of Asian colonial population being a good chunk of it, in an old port city, created a culture often with a similar hostility towards the natives as the white colonial population. Once you get to one side of the mountain its very tourist-defined with pricing for foreign expats, European retirees etc. All of this creates a economic landscape that feels relatively developed but somewhat "closed-off" in dynamic opportunity to most Blacks & Coloureds.

Bet On Yourself!!! The best investment you can ever make is in acquiring skills, meeting progressive people & building a great body. Whenever ppl ask me what to do with R10,000... I tell them to invest in whatever got them the R10k in the first place, and then scale it. Slim says that Adidas Yeezys was an expression of Kanye's confidence and that's what ppl are/were buying... a piece of Kanye's confidence.

@@athabilehlangu1545 Figure out how you made it, and gamble smarter so you can make more. Take that R10k and buy data to watch professional gambler videos. Use that money to go to stadiums and meet the players, etc. Invest in that craft. It made you money... make sure it makes you more money.

10% of R10 000 is actually R1000 but we get it you digressed a bit... personally I don't think black people do not have an appetite of numbers we just like the experience and exposure to practically play with the numbers, not to get historically political or anything...
