Shocking Blue was the name of a Dutch pop music group. It is also one of my favorite blues, as well. You new favorite blue ink that you don’t realize that it is your favorite yet is Akkerman Delfts Blauw. Ladies dig it, dogs love it, ducks fear it! 😅

I love blue fountain pen ink. I know a lot of people are 'tired' of blue from ballpoint days, but for years, I wrote with purple or orange ink ballpoint/gel/rollerball pens. I didn't return to blue ink until I returned to fountain pens a few years ago.

For me, it wasn't because of ballpoint pens (which I have never used that much), but because of "school blue" fountain pen ink, the only colour we were allowed to use in school until grade 8 or so (after that, we got some more options both for colours and for types of pens, although ballpoint pens were never allowed in school). I gradually got over that aversion by starting out with blues that were very different from "school blue", and now I like pretty much all shades of blue.

You’re the one who got me to finally try Sargasso Sea by Diamine, it is AMAZING.

Don’t use blue inks often but my go-to blues are both from Monteverde and are Capri Blue and Caribbean Blue. I also have a bottle of Parker Quink Washable Blue due to its long history. Great video, thanks.

I cant believe how many shades of blue there are out there! I have so many bottles of blue, swatches are all different but once I write with them they look so much the same out of the nib! However you have some awesome choices here! ❤

Also, the shocking blue, I love the color WITHOUT the sheen. Is there anything out there like that?

Thanks for this video. I am currently using the infamous Baystate Blue, but it seems to be very wet and the output from my extra fine nib looks more like fine or even medium. Do you think any of these inks would work better with an extra fine nib? I'm not looking for shading or sheen, just a very fine line of a beautiful blue.

I love blue inks - that Diamine is a gorgeous one! My other favorite is Diamine Florida Blue.

Maybe fun to mention but the names of Akkerman inks have a meaning with a Dutch reference. Most are places around The Hague (Binnenhof is kinda like Downingstreet) or references to famous painters and paint colors. Shocking Blue was a dutch band from The Hague (if I’m not mistaken) most famous for their hit ‘Venus’. Maybe younger people might know the song from the cover by Bananarama. I hope, from now on, whenever you write with Shocking Blue, you will hear the song Venus 😊

🙏Cool! I definitely don't think of Venus when I go near my samples of Shocking Blue; this ink has the staining potential of Noodlers BSB and the wide-spreading sheen of Organic Studio's Nitrogen even on things on which Shocking Blue hasn't gone near. A beautiful ink nonetheless 💙🔥

I share some of your favorites. I don't have the Akkerman inks in this comparison, but based on your swatch indeed there is no need to purchase Shocking Blue if you already have Majestic Blue.

I really liked your blue inks today. I use them for work or journaling. I don't know why, but I get in a bad mood working with other colors. I have most of the inks you presented today. The only one I do not have is Visconti Blue because right now it is really difficult to find.

I got my Visconti blue as a 'freebie' in the box with a Visconti pen. I hadn't realised it was difficult to source on its own.

@@christopherbritton293 I found it in some places in Italy or in the USA the problem with those bottles is, as far as I can see in the pictures the blue ink they sell is not exactly the same as the one shown here, and that is the one I like. I have two places here in Berlin where I buy my better pens, so I'll go there and see if they can find them for me.

Interesting; I find myself favoring Blue ink, my favorites would be Iroshizuku Tsukiyo, Sailor Manyo Ha Ha (not meant for the workplace, but this ink in journals or letters ages well), Sailor Seiboku, Kyoto TAG Aonobi. I"m hot/cold on JHerbin Kyanicite du Nepal... I like the tone but the glitter is maddening and seems to come in clumps or not at all... Honorable mention to Pilot Blue and Pelikan Blue-Black as budget friendly blues. Wearinguul Lost is also neat but the bottle's too small/expensive and it is a touch more dry than the above ones... TBH, I'd also have KonPeki but I used it for my 2022 journal so I'm taking a break.

I love Kyanite du Népal but I don't like glitter, so I decanted the ink a few times to remove all the shimmering particles. I do that for all shimmering inks; I think they add something to improve the flow of these types of inks, so I find that they coat the nibs superbly while allowing for a tight line to go down on paper. I've done this with Herbin KdN, Bleu Océan (I have the first edition without shimmer and the subsequent one, which feels more lubricated), Caroube de Chypre, Cornaline d'Égypte, Émeraude de Chivor, Améthiste de l'Oural, and also with Robert Oster Shake 'n Shimmy Blue Moon, Diamine Cobalt Jazz, Arabian Nights, Golden Sands, Cocoa Shimmer, Caramel Sparkle, Night Sky, Inferno Orange and Shimmering Sea, and from the Inkvent editions, Jack Frost, Vintage Copper, Deck the Halls and Arctic Blast but I may leave this one as is 'cuz it's oh so pretty: it has bluish shimmer and pinkish sheen, and some shading out of certain nibs.

@@basta.dotto_ Interesting. I've tried multiple pens Broad/wet/italic, and I roll the pen every sentence, but when I look at my writing, the shimmer is just too inconsistent. It shows up one paragraph and then not for two more. I may take up your idea b/c I like the tone by itself.

@@rds4629 Have you tried it in a Platinum Preppy with an 03 or 05 nib with an empty proprietary cartridge that has the little shaker in it?

@@basta.dotto_ No I haven't. I used it in my Opus 88 w/ 2.3mm stub and a Leonardo Momento w/ 1.1mm flex stub nib... both very juicy and easy to clean pens. It's not terrible but when I look at my writing afterwards, the uneven glitter distracts from the appearance... guess it's not for me and your suggestion of decanting is a good one. BTW, I had love/hate w/ Sailor Ha Ha, but finding some good pens made it work well.

I'm sorry! Blue is my least favorite ink color. Maybe cause I've used it (In so many forms) for so many years... like most of us, and now I just find it kinda boring & dull color, unless it has a unique property (Shimmer, sheen or whatever...) I do love me some light blues, turquoise inks & teals tho!
