Or maybe just put some Vaseline around the outside of the tealight so you can take it out easily and put another one in?

The thing about plaster of Paris which is what they’ve used here, as it starts to thicken and set it gets warmer and warmer and can get hot enough to break glass. It also expands as it gets warm and sets so that will also break glass votives if you used them in the plaster.

​@@sweetb2006 Hi Jami, it's quite straightforward. Cut the tissue paper into small squares depending on the size of your project. For a smaller item, cut it into two-inch squares. If using a styro-foam base, take a semi-sharpened pencil (sharpened but with a blunt point), wrap tissue around the tip (put the tip in the center of the tissue square). place the tip in some white glue and pierce the foam with the tissue wrapped, glue dipped pencil point. Don't soak it in the glue, just dip it and stick into the foam. If you want to cover a hard surface, like poster board, etc., use the eraser end of the pencil and follow the same procedure. Place the eraser in the center of the tissue square and wrap the eraser with it, touch it to the glue then adhere it to the flat surface. Repeat until your surface is covered to your satisfaction. My late sister made Christmas trees this way by cutting cotton fabric into squares and gluing it into styro-foam cones. When dry she embellished with glitter, ball ornaments and garlands and stars. Quite exquisite. It's possible to make these with larger squares of tissue, but you will need to find a means to reinforce the length of tissue to stand erect as it will drape if not supported (by larger, I mean full or nearly full sized sheets of tissue). Don't hesitate to ask a question if I've left something unclear. Have fun. Over the years I've made Kissing Balls with paper, Baby Shower decor, indoor signs, etc.. Tons of Ideas. Coastal decor, paint or use nail polish to faux marbelize in ombre' layers. Make a little juste fishnet to fit over around it. glue little seashells onto the net, pour clear Elmer's glue into the empty spot where the votive was add a drop of blue to make it look like water. Then, glue in a piece of driftwood, or a sea bird or a larger seashell or a sand dollar turned up on its edge. and drape a bit of seaweed, or twist some cotton twine to make little rope, and hang a tiny life ring, a seahorse, etc. from the little rope. ( You could glue to seabird up on top of the piece of driftwood ) You could make a little lifeboat ring with some scraps of carboard, a toilet paper of power towel tube slice, etc. you could have tons of fun with this. You could also make beezewax candle rolls, put a batter powered votive or pillar light inside to glow out from the beezewax and wrap jute or cording around the places where the cups are glued together. You could change the colors out for the seasons as well. Craft foil from the dollar store could also be used to cover the plaster of paris cup shapes for the seasonal changes as you can mould it over the ripples as well. Patriotic treatment, use crochet thread, string, cording, or yarn to wrap around the segments. ( silver and gold Christmas left over wrapping or craft cording could work.) You could actually use red, white, and blue paint, in three cups so you can dip the colors to make the segments look like they have frosting on them. I have done this with ceramic bowls that I have made and fired. You could even make a new set of the segments just to use for patriotic purposes, where you could switch the decorations around, or don't worry about it paint over them and make something new each time. I just found out that Mod Podge made a new formula, MOD PODGE that is DISHWASHER SAFE~ Eeekkk I gotto go find this stuff. Just buy the battery powered ones, I would and you could also make your hole deeper and narrower so you could fit a taller narrow pillar candle or a taper candle that is battery or solar powered as well.

I believe the cupcake liners are used just to get the cupcake shape. Plaster of Paris dries white, therefore you can decorate the molds as you wish. It would be more expensive to glue the molds together because silicone is not cheap anymore, and they are reusable.

I would put a lubricant inside and just use battery powered votives or narrow pillar or taper candles but that is me. We are not allowed to burn candles inside where I live. They usually have batter powered lights at Christmas time etc. You can even pick them up at garage sales, after someone has had a wedding, thrift stores, or even find them in your Christmas stuff.

Yes you can, just make sure you have a tiny bit of room in the hole, and put it out with some needlenose pliers. I would use batter operated light if it was me. They come in all sizes at the dollar store. etc.

Sure just make sure that there is a bit of give in the hole, perhaps put a touch of lubricant in there.

How do you think the commercially sold ones are made? They use the same basic materials as these homemade ones do. Also, maybe crafting is relaxing and enjoyable for some people, so for them it would not be a waste of time.

Re the questions about candles - just remove the burnt wick that's left and insert another tealight candle. The new candles are very easily removed from the aluminum holder and will slide into the one cemented into the plaster of paris
