Words can be powerful sometimes, but how much power do they hold in limiting women's success? Should you say humankind instead of mankind? Should you say chairperson instead of chairman? Language has evolved over time with 'man' meaning something different as compared to before, so should we change with it? A video from Brut India recently won hearts where a 6 year old girl asked these hard-hitting questions. In this video, I look at those questions & people's responses to it and let you know what I think.

Those terms are just outright lame The action of mansplaining can be done by anyone out of stupidity/ego/jealousy, women can say the darndest of things to other women. Solution would be to point out to an objective piece of information (like a journal, known method etc. Manspreading: this is such a non-issue, the solution would be to politely ask a man to move. Sitting that way is not even a gendered thing in the 1st place, it is just that men tend to do more Manspreadin

I honestly don't think that it matters to say man made or something like that and the "FEMINISTS" are saying to change these words. I mean seriously these things bother you really. Because I feel Sirf khaali logo ke paas hi yeh kaam hote hai😂. And if they really want to bring some change in the society or gender equality they should focus more on education girls that they should too respect men or boys and men are not the only one who should respect women. They should also pay equally(as I have seen so many girls who thinks that only boys should pay) and most important girls should not take the advantage of being a girl. Equality doesn't mean that girls are the best or girls are superior than men just because they can give birth to a living being because that is how a woman's body is made we are blessed that we can do so but that doesn't men are useless. They are also humans just like us so just stop making them feel that they are the ones who has oppressed us because we know more than men women have done that. Support each other if you see that something wrong is happening with a boy speak up as they do get through so many things and they don't even talk about it. And support each other.

I usually do agree with you on most things, but this topic specifically seems like something which was brought up because there weren't enough things to whine about. As you mentioned, if the doctors and nurse example, its based on statistics, more than 60% of doctors are men, and the nursing field is overwhelmingly female. The point is, if you are finding problems with harmless examples that are meant to help you teach concepts, then you are likely not focused on the concept and just trying to find something to have a problem with. Also, the moment you say, 'the future is female' unironically, you step over the misandrist territory and cease the ability to claim that you stand for equality.
@baby_bear6297
@baby_bear6297 3 жыл бұрын
She didn't say, 'the future is female'. It was that author. Also, stop bringing this statistics game everywhere. You didn't even understood the main point she made. It was about what notion gets embedded in your head subconsciously as a child. If everytime they see a doctor as male and nurse as female, or a pilot as male and an air hostess as female, they might think that this are what the roles are for each sex, which is something that we don't want. I am not saying to consciously change the textbooks to be inclusive but to not strictly assign sex to any individual in a story or a question.
@PlantyMan7
@PlantyMan7 3 жыл бұрын
@Om Agarwal the 'you' was used in a generalized sense, not particularly towards Aastha. Its not a game, the statistics show a trend. Her point made no sense because it doesn't work that way for majority of of people. Generations till now have grown with the same examples in the books and elsewhere, people still grow up and choose what they want, the examples haven't stopped men from becoming nurses, and women from becoming doctors or scientist or whatever. Changing the words you use to be inclusive is different that whining about words because they mention the opposite gender are two different things. Thats the difference between calling a policeman - police officer as opposed to spelling women as womyn or womxn because they hate that it has 'man' in it.

The term *‘man'* is derived from Sanskrit word Manav which denotes all human race. That's why in Sanskrit,we reffers man-made as *‘मानवनिर्मित'* (Manav nirmit) *In early world and till medieval era,the word man is used to reffer all human race.* Till 2nd mid millennium AD,it was being used to denote all human race not just a specific gender The term *man* (from Proto-Germanic *mann- "person") and words derived from it can designate any or even all of the human race regardless of their sex or age. In traditional usage, man (without an article) itself refers to the species or to humanity (mankind) as a whole. *According to one etymology, Proto-Germanic *man-n- is derived from a Proto-Indo-European root *man-, *mon- or *men- (see Sanskrit/Avestan manu-, Slavic mǫž "man, male"). The Slavic forms (Russian muzh "man, male" etc.) are derived from a suffixed stem *man-gyo-* *You see, when Old English was first being spoken in the 5th century AD, there were two distinct words for men and women: “wer” meant “adult male,” and “wif” meant “adult female.” There was a third word, “man,” which simply meant “person” or “human being.”*

Do we not have any social issues more pressing than this to solve..??

@ashishshukla6207
@ashishshukla6207 3 жыл бұрын
My 2 cents here. A lot of these issues raised by people in India these days seem to be cheap copies of western issues, when the cultures differ significantly. Some of these languages and perceptions are from a prehistoric psyche of human evolution like pointed out as well. Mother earth, mother nature because a mother is who nurtures. We can contest why such trait is associated with mother only and why mother was supposed to take care of a child. However, it's biological as well. A female body is more suitable for the nurturing and hence such traits are associated with the feminine just like some are associated with the masculine. There's a concept of individuation introduced by Carl Jung which is about developing such traits which are not inherent but of, let's say, the opposite nature, to make one whole. Yes a man can be caring and a woman can be competetive, but a man can't grow a uterus and a woman can't develop *community guidelines* . Nature limits us all. And nature was not MAN-made. Just like some people say female entrepreneur, people also say male nurse. It doesn't intend to hurt sentiments. Besides there were a lot many great POETS and POETESSES. Instead of finding a problem with language, we can try educating people more about vocabulary maybe. Maybe I'm projecting any bias unintentionally, I wouldn't reject that idea. But I have also thought about it. So many people have been bringing a lot of real and some stupid issues to light since a long time. But the complaints don't seem to stop ever. One thing changes after another and new issues arise again and again. Makes me wonder whether we are trying to solve problems or create them where they don't exist in the first place. Also the video of the girl seems like someone is pointing out to her what to do like when she didn't finish the quote completely. Stuff like this undermines the credibility even when the concerns are genuine. Things can be better I honestly think so. But when it comes to slaying a dragon or fighting endlessly with a proclaimed indestructible wall, I'd prefer being killed by the dragon. Sorry, I just wanted to write as much as I could while I had a context. I apologise but I do not regret taking the opportunity. Thank you for making it this far. You deserve appreciation.🤝

@@Im_basically_an_Npc ideologies are mob mentalities anyway. I believe we should make our own philosophies to live by. And there is nothing wrong in being a man, my friend. The thing is that solutions and happiness don't sell. Problems and fears on the other hand can start whole businesses. If one is a man, they shouldn't have been that way because men are oppressive. If one is a woman, she shouldn't be that way because she is oppressed. But no one actually asks that man and that woman what they think. To all the people that are angry about this, Please understand that all these terms are not new or modern terms, why is that relevant? here is why - In old English, man referred to a human being(both men and women). Don’t assume that all terms that contain man derive from the word man. Words such as manufacture, manipulate, manual and manuscript come from manus, the Latin for "hand".

You know what the real problem is in Indian stereotypes society it's always heard that mummy ka raja beta or papa ki pari. That's the biggest problem. A boy rising by his mother is not good. Mother love is not necessary for boy it's harmful. That's why now more man are raja betas.Yes it necessary for her daughter, it's helpfull for her . But in India is the opposite As a 18 years old boy now I understand what I really want to be a real man. A boy should be stay alone From thair family and have to do their own thing. a woman haven't any ideas about men and masculinity, real masculinity is not toxic.woman can't teach any morality to men. We men teach ever think from our own experiences . I actually want to say boy should make distance from his mother's behavior not from mother. Most of Indian men are emotional that's not good. Emotional men are dumb Unemotional men are smart. But emotional woman are smart Unemotional woman are dumb.

@@ayandey1438 agreed. Mother is the closest person for a child . If a child is female she can keep that bond forever. But for a boy to become man, he has to come out from that bond. Because identities of mother-daughter r similar (coz both r females). There are several cultures where boys were turned into men .. like teaching them martial arts, Hunting, leaving them in forest during prehistoric time. Mother's try to protect...but too much protection will make the boy self obsessed n narcissistic. He will expect the same from his wife. That's the problem..he will become man-child who has to be taken cared by wife (in her shelter, like mother), always protected, always meeting their tantrums. He will never become a man.
