I agree, I'm an atheist, but I want christian values back in the West. I don't want this idea that Islam's values should be in the West. Mainstream media glorifies Islam and refuses to show any of the bad stuff in it. I'd take a Christian West over an Islamic West anyday.

Dean Quinn That's some stupid ass shit to say, especially as an atheist. I honestly don't know how you could justify holding that position. A book of bronze age fairy tails is not a suitable foundation for a modern society. Fist off both of those books say some crazy stupid shit, second they're both a continuation of the same story. A lot of what you refer to as Christian values predate Christianity, and the MSM does not glorify islam. Learn to formulate a thought on your own.
@dean8705
@dean8705 7 жыл бұрын
With your username, you sound like a Muslim so it's expected you'll say something like that, and yes it does glorify Islam. Read the fucking news. Anything that goes on Syria gets coverage of the victims, they even got a 7 year old Syrian to do an interview. Stuff that's happened in Sweden no coverage of the victims. Just making sure Islam is seen a religion of peace when it isn't. There's a bias in the leftist mainstream news towards Islam.

This is exactly on point and something I feel very strongly about. The biggest lesson I learned in college was that for every subject or question, there are hundreds of people who devote their entire life to that subject, and who have no clear answers. I, who read a few articles about a topic, certainly don't. This is why I don't have strong opinions on what should be done for most things- because I am not at all equipped to evaluate these questions. I also agree that ego is one of the key motivators of successful people. I grew up in a community that emphasized modesty and humility, and eventually I realized that it was holding me back from achievement. I was shrinking from the limelight, thinking it wrong to draw attention to myself. I now recognize how without my ego, I would basically be a couch potato and be unmotivated to do things that do help people. Thanks for your clear and lucid exposition of underlying principles. You are such a needed voice of reason and calm.

Rob Harris exactly. The original premise of the founding of America was a liberal idea. The original conservative philosophy was to return to the original liberalism. I agree with not knowing being seen as a strength, but for some reason a lot of people assume if someone admits to not knowing something it's a weakness or at worst they're seen as stupid. So as part of the tribe everyone needs to be know it all. In fact being a know it all is taught everywhere! I can be know it all with my hobbies and interests simply because I want to know everything about it.

Nice moderate view. Which is very much lacking in the world today. You're right, people are enjoying the instant gratification of the well memed snark and not the complex reality. Now that we all know the genie of social media ego has been released, we have to go back and learn how to compromise and cooperate amidst all that noise. It doesn't matter how right you are, you still have to share the planet with those who have the opposite opinion. And their right to that opinion must be honored.

Thank you for speaking on this, I've been lamenting this very thing for years among friends. I'm a somewhat narcissistic person and have plenty of strong opinions but I like to think I'm smart enough to realize that for ~95% of the subjects on which I have an opinion I am wholly unqualified to comment. People these days are not interested in having conversations about issues, its easier to state your opinion as fact and close the window so you feel better about yourself. The fear which drives this is likely based on the pain of admitting you don't know everything as well as the reality that when you dig down to it, most people's strong opinions/facts do not have a logical basis, they're primarily manifested exclusively by how they feel, and its hard to debate feelings.

Your title says everything. :) I preach that all the time to my family and friends but I have to admit that it's not something people wants to hear. In other words, sharing that concern with others is not a crowd pleaser. My explanation for that universal trait is simple and it goes back to Socrates teachings which were, by the way, shared by Confucius which is a fact not many people know. I would paraphrase their words like this: knowing what you know and what you don't know, this is the real knowledge.

This is something my buddy and I were talking about the other day. Some people just can't say "Ya know what, my bad." I used to be this way, and I realized how foolish and intellectually stifling it is. You don't look smart to most people, they may not be able to prove you're a fool, but they can see it. As a result most people will just lose interest in conversing with you about anything, mainly because of a lack of interest and respect, but also because it just doesn't yield anything useful. This is the exact reason I watch the Rubin Report. In all honesty, when it feels like the world has gone mad, it's kinda nice to turn on "The Rubin Report" and see someone open minded, not shouting at their guests, or telling them they're wrong or making fun of them. Strangely enough, this is also the first political program I ever watched that made me feel like "ya know, maybe i'm wrong about that or this." It's amazing what an open mind can do for you, thanks Dave.

Dave, this is such an important topic, and once again, you hit it on the nail. Though both sides (right and left) are guilty of ego, I find the left (speaking as a former liberal) is especially guilty of this. It really stops them from having frank discussions and the integrity of truly seeking to understand the other side. One of the main reasons why I left the left (and consider myself a classic liberal/ lower case L libertarian), was due to an assignment in my poli sci class. My group was randomly picked to debate the issues of man-made global warming. Mind you, at the time, I believed in the Al Gore global warming hysteria- we were just assigned to be provide opposing view points. After going through our presentation, filled with facts -which didn't even necessarily deny global warming, it merely suggested we simply don't know enough to make policies based on the information we do have, many of which are based on faulty research. We faced the wrath of a classroom full of "experts" who wouldn't even let us get a word in edgewise- we were simply shouted down. Even when I tried to explain that there numerous scientists who are skeptical, the students accused those scientists of being "corporate shills." That was an eye opening experience, and really made me reflect on other issues.

Thanks for the feelgood platitudes, Dave. I mean the demagoguery is stunning. It's super easy to say "yeah maybe I'm wrong sometimes": it gives the impression you're open-minded and your opponents are less honest than you are, without actually having to walk the walk. "My word is more valuable because I'm saying I might theoretically be wrong, see???" A cheap trick that doesn't cost you anything. A bit like Harris, who puts a lot of effort into building his reputation as The Most Moral Man On Earth (TM), it's kind of a preemptive, universal, negative ad hominem.

Just ignore the losers in the comments nit-picking or bashing, they are part of the problem, you are part of the solution. Voices like yours preaching respect of your fellow man (not tolerance) and freedom are growing louder and stronger every day, eventually we will win. I say respect of your fellow man, because you can disagree with someone while respecting them, and their rights to believe it. But to "tolerate" someone you disagree with.... well that doesn't sound nearly as easy or effective to do.
