Clacton is the only parliamentary constituency that has ever been won at a general election by a party associated with Nigel Farage - though a seat in the House of Commons has so far eluded the man himself.
In 2014, the Conservative MP for Clacton, Douglas Carswell, announced he was defecting to the UK Independence Party (UKIP) and triggered a by-election, which he won with 60% of the vote, becoming UKIP’s first elected member of Parliament.
Talk’s International Editor Isabel Oakeshott joins Kevin O’Sullivan to discuss this further.

@@paulsouthall2731 Its a fact, Farage hardly attended any meeting concerning UK farming or fisheries or indeed any meeting within the EU parliament that would have an effect on UK businesses. He was too busy show-boating and grand standing. After all his main purpose being there was to get the UK to leave. He is incapable of working with other views or ideas and always wants to be the centre of attention. He'll act no differently if elected to the UK parliament - he's a disrupter. I pity the people of Clacton because I can't see Farage spending his weekends there to hold a surgery for the locals to come and air their grievances - well at least not after the cameras finally leave.

With his success a) In getting UKIP to first place in the Euro elections so he could hold Cameron's feet over the coals and force a referendum b) In achieving a Leave vote in said referendum c) In topping the final Euro elections was the Brexit party, he has shown time and again that he knows how to defeat the mainstream parties on their own territory. Reform UK is registered as a Limited Company. Its a business so their leader isn't elected by the members. In 1930s Germany another political party used to disregard democratic elections for their leader as well. They got into power and banned elections from then on ruled Germany as a dictatorship. I don't like Farage at all, I didn't join UKIP until after he left the party due to that fact. However, on reflection, I do think he would be good for Clacton, he'd put Clacton on the map and could attract investment and jobs for a location that really requires it.
