They already studied this. Working in office comes with water cooler talk, attempts to appear busy, lunch breaks, less work hours logged, etc.

When persons were able to show their productivity remotely, while managing their homes and other activities, they grew accustomed to balancing their lives this way. Now these persons are being told to report for duty on time after, what can be, a long commute; having to interact with co-workers who can carry on distracting conversations or hold unnecessary in-person meetings; being expected to work within a time period of 8, 9 or 10 hours with an official start and end time rather than working a little more leisurely around their personal life. All of these things matter to an employee, and make or break their productivity. I feel management is having a hard time selling the idea that the only way productivity can be good is if the employee shows up to a building every day...we saw that it wasn't necessary for so long...why not leave well enough alone?

Maybe low productiivity is a form of silent protest of being back in the office. Maybe people are working less hours in the office whereas at home, they are willing to put in extra hours for due to the convenience. Also, forcing people back in the office will result in people leaving for jobs that allow for working from home.

The distractions and issues at home are easier to manage/remove and less variable than those at work. At home, you can weed that stuff out and prioritize at your own pace. At work, they tend to be pushed off and pile up. More stress tends to mean less productivity. Guess where you have less power to deal with stressors?

Going into the office is ridiculous if the work can be done at home. People are such 'people-pleasers' Lol. I'm never going back to the office! Thank goodness my employer supports WFH. The number of hours and $ spent throughout their lives commuting is just mind-boggling! People don't really calculate these things...

Back in 1980 my co-worker and I came in early to a temporary position, due to commute being to our advantage. We got MORE DONE in the two hours (7 - 9 a.m.) than the ENTIRE day, as we were constantly interrupted. Now ADD CELL PHONES. Co-workers don't plan or INFORM you as it's "all about them" and "in the moment". Well, how about letting me know so I have two/three days or weeks to FIND supplies and get the supply chain infor.?? No. Management even on your own level think they" don't answer to you" so again, you're on the receiving end of their stupidity. THEN you have to save them..........from themselves.

Productivity is a function of output, and labor hours put in. If management decides to reduce inventory output (because of an expected recession), with the same number of workers, than the productivity % will decrease. So perhaps the productivity drop has nothing to do with back to the office. It probably has more to do with management decisions and the evolving economic landscape. Unfortunately, to right the ship, companies will begin laying off people, to get the productivity equation back up.

Executive management across many industries have changed the way employees are evaluated. They basically have said no one "exceeds expectations", exceeding expectations is expected and as such compensation awards are smaller for employees who routinely went above and beyond. So basically employers created this "productivity" drop. The are doing this because of a handful of articles in executive management magazines. The goal is to create a "bell" curve for employee evaluation scores, to reduce labor costs and increase profit and compensation for executives. Some kind of psychosis has taken over management. Regardless of where the employees are working. It is called the "bell curve approach" or "forced ranking" to worker evaluations. Look it up...it is all the rage with "C" leaders.

Forcing employees to work from office is a very toxic behaviour of the management. It's is waste of time, money, energy along with emotional weakness ( who stays away from family) . This decision in the name of hybrid work is killing people from inside. No friends, coworker can support you the way family supports a person emotionally and mentally and lack of these support will surely bring down the productivity.

Yup, i heard what i expected, i.e., it is the supervisors responsibility to make a work environment that makes workers happy. After all, the way people are educated today, they are used to getting awards for just showing up so why should they actually have to motivate themselves to work hard to succeed once they get a job? Next they will blame some kind of systemic something or other for their failure. If what i said makes you unhappy, just blame it all on Trump which will surely give you an endorphin rush.
