Hey brother. I really enjoyed your video. You have been misinformed. Unlike the Europeans and the Americans, the Ottomans did not participate in slave trading. That is why there is a very small population of African Turks. The African Turks were free citizens of the Ottoman Empire that extended into Africa.

That is not entirely true. The empire was a significant part of the trade before it was cool! It was mostly the other way around though. Ottomans enslaved populations in its western areas and beyond -as well-. Skin color did not have much to do with the trade there. That's the important difference. Edit: added - as well - to remove an implication.

Taksim is the center of the city, but it is not the most touristy place. That honor goes to Sultan Ahmet. That’s where the most tourist attractions like the Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia, Grand Bazaar and Sarnich etc are located. It is where the original city was located. You can get there by metro.The grand Mosque you saw was built just a few years ago, doesn’t have any historical significance. It is literally a knockout of the historic mosques like Blue Mosque and the Sulayman Mosque in the historic center.

The guy who was singing at the end was just doing his job. During Ramadan, these 'Drummers' wake people up to eat their breakfast just before they start fasting. Ramadan is for 30 days and these drummers collect money/tips at the middle and end of Ramadan for services rendered.
@Paltheus
@Paltheus 4 ай бұрын
The drummer at the end is a "Ramadan Drummer" that patrols the neighborhood to wake people for "sahur" (the last (or first) meal of the day before the sun rises. This is an Ottoman tradition. The drummers bid on neighborhoods to get this job every year. They get paid in tips that they collect by going from door to door - I think twice in the month of Ramadan. If the guy paid him something that was probably just another "tip" but not a sanctioned one.

Hahaha the drummer 🥁 in the middle of the night got my husband really scared the first time we went there. He was like wtf is that . The “average Turk”. There used to be such a thing in the 80’s and 90’s. People looked a certain way more than not but, now there are a lot of Turks with natural blonde hair and green or blue eyes. Or black hair with deep blue eyes , even an occasional red head. Turks from Turkey are mostly immigrants from the Ottoman era, so they’re very mixed. The true Turks have dark hair and Asian eyes, like the Turks of the Turkish Republic s of Russia. Because Turks came from East Asia. Some stayed in Turkey and others migrated north. For instance Turkish men used to be very hairy but, now they’re not. Evolution 😊..
@cts9213

You don’t know much about the Turks and Turanis appearently. They are Caucasian and in the Asia naturally some were mixed as well. For example Timur was half Mongolian half Turkic. In the Balkans Turks are still the same, Caucasian. In Anatolia, mostly the same, too.

1:09 Istanbul's public transportation is not very good if you look at the Asian side, though its long term future looks very good because a lot of new metro lines are planned or being built right now. If you live in the Asian side and are not extremely close to the metro, you are forced to use buses, which are extremely crowded and their frequency is very very bad. You can wait for 20 minutes for a bus to come only for it to go at an average speed of 20km/h because of the traffic.

Bro, you mix up all the mosques ! First you thought that a mosque of a few years old on Taksim Square was the Blue Mosque and then you thought that the mosque in Çamlıca, also recently buit was old ?

Best part of travel is emerging yourself in the local culture eating their food, at least trying it.

Why doesn't a person do research about the place he's going to? D: This is especially common among Americans. When he goes somewhere, he goes without doing any research and travels based on rumors. I met people from many countries. They were all people who were open to knowledge and loved research. But these American people seem really strange to me. They are a people very disconnected from the world. It is the country where technology first emerged, but the people in it do not know how to use technology.

Hey man, here in Kadiköy and at this time of the year, 99,9% of the people you saw on the streets were locals, not tourists. And, yes, Istanbul isn't dirty at all. The Ramadan drummer at the end calls to wake up for the breakfast before daylight, that's his way to earn money, but he doesn't seem to have much success in there ;)

6:30. there was coffee in the Ottoman times, tea came to the Türkiye after 1960s. But you are right, the core of the turkish breakfast is turkish rize tea. We drink it 24/7 😀

I wouldn't say it's dirty but it's probably one of the worst designed cities on earth I've seen and literally doesn't deserve the hype it gets. Everything about it feels so packed, messy and poorly groomed. Overall the city architecture doesn't feel anything close to european at all.

I wouldn’t say at all. There are many many great architecture here, admittedly built in the past by empires that stood here.

you are in Kadıköy and even though there might be some tourists around, the entire place is not very touristy. So restaurants in the main road are ok there, you don't need to worry :) For Ramadan, other than the small cities in inner anatolia I think, most restaurants will be open and will be packed. No worries, you can eat as you wish
