I agree with your assessment about people being intellectually lazy. From my own observation the ones that support authoritarianism are either lazy intellectually and/or controlling personalities. People will gladly let another stand up to tyranny while they do nothing out of cowardice. I think your approach to seeking shared wisdom is another good idea. We don't have to agree with everything a person says. We can learn from their ideas and test our own against their opinions.
