Just because you're on a budget doesn't mean you can't make a mean dish! Can these friends make a decent dish under $15 without creating beef (pun intended) between them?

Can I just say a struggle meal and a meal on a budget are two different things. How I would spend $15 on a meal is different than how I would spend my LAST $15 on a meal. I think that’s where the confusion came in. That rice beans and plantains would gↄ a lot further if you struggling. 😂

I appreciate the honesty of the rice, beans, and plantain. That is a real meal I have had many times. Sometimes, you add an egg. You can add hot sauce, if you have it, and keep that bean broth. Queen and Kayline ain't ever struggled. Makeba has been through it. She's the only one that created a struggle meal and I appreciate how real it was. You're not trying to be fancy you're trying to survive. Therefore the goal is to be dirt cheap and to stretch. Makeba's did that. The sauce is the ketchup in your fridge, the beans are the cheapest form of protein, the plantain is cheap, filling and satisfying and the rice carries it. You still have money left over in case, and you can safely eat that meal all week till payday. The other two however were showing us $15 meals. She critiqued the way she did cause she knew that someone who struggled the way she did would have come a lot better if they had $15 to make one meal, for one person, for one day. Neither of them milked that money for what it's worth, talking bout chicken fillet, precut bell peppers and almond milk. Y'all better leave Makeba alone, she was spot on. $15 for one meal and you don't even have greens, wheel and come again.

Food can be so interesting and fun. We didn't have much but food was one of the things we sort of invested in because it meant time together. Ofc back then all the stuff that's popular now (i.e. oxtail, crab, goat and certain cuts of lamb) were less popular and much much cheaper. I realize in hindsight that our diet was heavily influenced by the Caribbean. Lots of Haitian, Jamaican and even Cuban and Dominican dishes. Irish was a fun discovery.

My great grandmother immigrated from Ireland to the US and she made Shepherds pie, quite often and traditionally a Shepards pie is made with ground lamb, ground beef, vegetables including peas, covered in a brown gravy and topped with rich, buttery mashed potatoes however I would love to try this beautiful womans version of Shepard's pie because ground turkey woukd probably be very good and her presentation despite having to spend only 15 dollars, was excellent. She definitely deserved the highest rating and I do love that she tried something different, put her own spin on such a traditional dish and would've loved to try her version

Quick struggle/budget meals that you can stretch for a while and wont be too hard on the tongue= meat sauce (pasta sauce+ ground beef) and a carb (rice, pasta, bread if you have to lol). Ramen+egg and sausage if you have it. Hamburger helper casserole (basically make it, then bake it with shredded cheese and breadcrumbs on top). And you can finesse any of those box meals into something decent with some seasoning and cheese tbh lol.

Forget about him getting a job, he didn't want to learn how to drive, or ride a bike. He quit school and sat around playing video games all of the time. She was constantly asking mom for money. While they had a projection TV and a new car both of which her husband, used the money that she earned, to buy to buy them. my struggle meal would probably be krelan. It's a perfect struggle meal and is also known as such because with only 1kg of flour you can feed 10 people without someone being hungry at the end. You basically mix bakingpowder, flour and water in a baking tray, bake it. then you take a fork and a knife and mush the 'bread' up and cover it in butter. You typically eat it with fresh or pickled vegetables, marmelade, honey, feta cheese and ajvar (a paprika based vegetable paste)

They didn't use expensive seasonings(if any), probably the bare minimum amount of cooking oil and included a low cost protein (beans). I thought that they were on point with keeping it low and nutritious regardless if it was lacking flavor. I don't think $15 is a budget meal either.
