Technology is rapidly expanding especially using axial electric motors. The big problem with EV trucks isn’t in coal burning to produce the electricity to run them on but the toxic chemicals used in the batteries that must be replaced and disposed of at regular intervals. CO2 actually has never been scientifically proven to cause global warming. This is only the opinion of paid political “experts”. (In the 70s it was fear of an ice age.). Climate change is linked to the cycles of the sun. It is toxicity that is far more damaging to our planet. In fact, CO2 helps to expand plant life which produces more oxygen for us. It is herbicides and pesticides sprayed on our crops that harm the environment. It is manufacturing waste and radioactive coolant water from power plants. It is chemicals in our foods and drugs prescribed that we produce as toxic waste products that are damaging. So the batteries contain Lithium and phosphate which are damaging to life far more than CO2. Until batteries are made without these chemicals, the combustion engine is still overall better for the environment. In the states, much of the electricity is still produced mostly by coal. So this technology must be improved like batteries using salt water or the like before it replaces the combustion engine. Also charging takes some time as opposed to filling a fuel tank. What if, for example, would happen if solar panels were put on the tops of the trailers?

There was NO discussion about the COSTS involved. If Pepsi is spending more money on Tesla trucks and electricity than they otherwise would be on regular trucks + gas, then there’s nothing to discuss. The only thing that matters is how much this costs and how much Pepsi is paying.

I wonder if Tesla thought of using battery swaps for Semi. If they make the batteries modular it can be added to increase range when needed and help companies save money when driving short distances as the batteries are smaller. Also instead of paying for a larger battery owners essentially rent batteries when they use battery swap.

I think the embedded (in the roadway) wireless charging will end up winning out, although it is less efficient as there is transmission loss with the near-field charging. The catenary wires look awful and can limit the other types of vehicles that can use the roadway. However, the fact that charging while travelling is being worked on is something that makes me pleased. I also wonder whether any charging on the go technology will be needed as battery tech continues to improve. I hope governments aren’t investing in infrastructure that will be obsolete before too long.

Please make sure you get W and Wh correct. W = Power Wh = Energy 1:50 the tesla megapack definitely doesn't hold 2.4 Megawatts of energy. That's just wrong. What is the capacity? That would be MWh. Or is it the power it can provide? For that, 2.4 MW would be huge.

As far as I'm aware PepsiCo only does longer hauls with Chips and other light goods. And we should mention the 750k Dollars the Gov paid Pepsi for every single one of the 21 trucks, making the whole thing financially viable in the first place. As well as the surroundings like mild to hot Californian climate, not only being ideals for electric range but also for the on site production of solar energy. Combine that with the rather short routes PepsiCo does and the whole thing makes a lot of sense. Australia on the other hand, with day long drives through the empty landscape, certainly lacks infrastructure. With a country this size, building it in said no men's land is financially insane. Not just because of the total volume of chargers, but also because of their remoteness resulting in them not being used a lot. Tesla wouldve done themselfs a favor to at least build a truck that fits on European and Asian roads.

I mean Tesla already posted a test where they fully loaded the bad boy and it got 500 miles. So it definitely can. It also makes more economic sense to drive lighter things, if they can, with the electric. Would save a lot more money if the ICE did the heavy loads more often, while the electric took care of the lighter stuff. Of course that only assumes you have a fleet of part electric, part ICE vehicles.
@strangefire2024
@strangefire2024 Жыл бұрын
Tesla was wise to start the semi with Pepsi which had ideal conditions. That is because at this stage they are new to this. Just like when Tesla started with the Roadster, it was overpriced and they were operating at a loss FOR YEARS. but as they got better and better, they were able to significantly improve and now all the industry giants are struggling to keep up with them and they are operating at a profit competitors can only dream of. The semi will go the same direction. They are still learning and ARE getting better and better. The other issue you didn't bring up is battery fires. They are addressing that too by transitioning to different battery chemistry. In due time we will see the Tesla semi eventually out perform gas and diesel powered semis in every metric.

I'm not against clean and efficient ways of transportation, but. You forgot (as usual) mention that all those trucks is not a zero emissions. To produce such truck you produce a whole lot of pollution. green house and toxic waste. As for now. Also there is you forgot to mention the pressure on infrastructure will be caused by growing numbers of such vehicles. There is simply not enough charging systems and energy that will feed them. Also... And for me it's more of a riddle as I'm not an expert. There is question with disposal of both batteries and trucks. As batteries will run out, how will you recycle those? And a truck itself. Probably will not end up with simple battery replacement rather than whole truck would be replaced. Which means the end of current "buy truck to pay the loan and sell it used to get at least some profit" scheme used by every truck company exists today on the planet. Not only that. Owner operators also will go extinct because of it. Or will be forced to use old trucks for ever. Which as for me is pretty ok. So... There is bunch of problems that need to be addressed before making claim that it's oh so great because you "all so pro " Let's save the mother earth" type of guy.
@markjonz

To cover all those topics would take a much longer vdo and it's unfair to criticise him for not going over all that. Nobody is saying these issues don't exist, but progress is being made on all fronts and of course it's going to take time. The LFP batteries in the Mercedes BEV truck will last 1 million miles and the batteries can then be reused for energy storage (a less demanding duty cycle), and yes the batteries can be effectively recycled recovering most of the elements. It's all a work in progress but one that's necessary.
