One a replica, one not! The Percival Mew Gull was a British racing aircraft of the 1930s. It was a small, single-engine, single-seat, low-wing monoplane of wooden construction, normally powered by a six-cylinder de Havilland Gipsy Six piston engine. During its racing career it set many records and was considered a significant, efficient design, one that eventually reached a top speed of 265 mph (425 km/h) on a modest 205 hp (153 kW) in its final 1939 form. A modern-day observer has characterised the Mew Gull as "the Holy Grail of British air racing". During the second half of the 1930s, Mew Gulls were dominant in air-racing in the UK and consistently recorded the fastest times until the outbreak of war stopped all civilian flying in late 1939.

I maidened my quarter scale HEKL (the red one) Mew Gull just before Christmas. It's not true scale but looks reasonably like the full-size. It's electric powered with energy from a 6S 4AH LiPo battery (22.8 volts) to a brushless motor. I just fancied doing a different one as most people choose to model Alex Henshaw's white AEXF. More scale detail to add before it flies again in the Spring when the weather hopefully improves. It's built from the (very) old Skyways Models plan pack so a lot is scratch built. The Mew Gulls are beautiful aeroplanes and your video shows them very well. Is AEXF still based at Old Warden?

I made one of those forty years ago - and it flew very well on a .61.

I bought the kit (untouched) on eBay about 5/6 years ago and only recently got round to building it. I hadn't realised how old it was. Of course, like everybody I changed a few things like, in my case, cowl mounting and wing attachment as well as making a hatch for battery changing. It's amazing how it would have flown on a 61 of the type available then which weren't as powerful as modern ones. Flies great on electric with a 14x7 prop spinning at about 9k rpm.

Nice video. It's about time for Old Warden to adopt the same ear-piece system that Goodwood uses, then we won't need to listen to the idiots on the PA droning-on for hours on end - unless we want to...!
