Hi, there! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Honestly, I do agree for some parts you said. The casting isn't as book accurate as we expected yet Rick claims it is going to be a book accurate series. Despite this, I'm wiling to give them a chance to see why Rick decided to bend the rules in the description for them. Asides from this, I do agree that an animated series might've been better as you can't go wrong with the descriptions, acting, or CGI there. It would probably make it way more accurate than the live action version.

I agree. Almost all of them don’t look like their characters and it’s pretty hard to tell who is playing who because again, it’s not accurate. Rick assures us that it’s all good because they act like their characters and that that’s all that matters but in my opinion, descriptions also matter. Despite that though, I’d rather have an accurate personality and good acting so I’m still willing to see what they do with this show.

The reason Rick vetoed this was because he prefers talent over appearance as well as the fact that hair dye can ruin your hair and wigs can itch. But hopefully, they’ll find other actors that will look the parts of the other characters.

I get where you’re coming from. Personally, this was a thought that came to me when I first saw all of the actors/actresses for this TV show. It’s pretty sad that they aren’t really the most book-accurate and I was pretty disappointed about it. About the thought of it being animated, the idea sounds great to be honest. That way, there isn’t any more problems about book-accuracy. But, a live action would also be nice at the same time especially if the actors are book-accurate. 👍

When it comes to the trailer, I also felt the darkness in it but I actually liked the change. What I mean is blonde hair, blue eyes and white skin 😂 I'm not prejudice or racist, it's just that I read the book, and following the books description, I had Annabeth's figure pictured in my mind, and it's totally different from Leah's looks. And to tell the truth, I never likes a live action adaptation that depicted totally different from the book. Minor changes are fine, but changing a white character into black? It's like white washing (which I hated a lot), but the other way around. But for all and all, crossing my finger on the series, if they play it well, maybe they can change my mind, right?

@@elmahagstrom3263 honestly i think dior is perfect for the role because she's kinda intimidating looking and seems sarcastic. however i can understand why people might be disappointed because she isn't buffer like how clarisse was described in the books. same for charlie as luke i think he's a great pick. he's tall (like 6'0), has an athletic build and seems like a great guy who's super nice and trustworthy but as an actor can switch up real fast and become the cunning, ambitious, scared, and manipulative luke that we saw in the books! as for him not having blond hair and, what blue eyes i think it was? idk but i don't care about his hair and eye colors, except for when he has gold eyes as kronos. i do want to see luke's iconic facial scar tho! and i love leah as annabeth! she seems really sassy and smart and brave and ready to prove she can do things! she's also the right age and even has the princess curls tha percy describes. sure they're not blonde but honestly to me that's not a big deal.

I agree with you when it comes to the new cast being talented and that they’ll do a great job but I don’t really agree with what you said about preferring the old cast over the new cast. I watched the movies and I unfortunately didn’t feel the characters from the book. Despite that though, I’m glad that you were able to feel that despite the not-accurate script and writing. Also, about the new Annabeth not getting any Athena vibes, I understand what you feel and I sort of feel the same way but I want to see Leah as Annabeth and give her a chance. I’m willing to do that for all of the cast members because we haven’t really seen them portray the characters and I think it’s a bit unfair to judge them just because of how they look without seeing them act their part. Wow... that’s a lot of thoughts. Here’s what I think: I agree with what you said about Leah being an amazing actress. Seriously, I do feel as if Leah is pretty much capable of bringing Annabeth’s personality. What I also agree with is the fact that Leah doesn’t look like Annabeth by any means. Like, only the age is the same thing the two of them have in common. Another thing I agree with is Leah looking a lot like Hazel from HOO. If Leah was cast as Hazel, I’d honestly be really happy and I do get what you mean about race-swapping characters. Like how when a white character is race-changed to a black person, it’s okay and that if if’s the other way around, people are furious. I fully understand that and I honestly feel like the fandom would react like that if Rick announced that he casted a white Hazel. The idea that people are supporting Leah just because of trying to not be racist in front of people... I half-agree. I guess there are people really like that but I feel as though there are also people who would want Leah as Annabeth for some reasons that I don’t even know. When I first saw Annabeth in the movie, I was automatically thrown off and taken- aback. I guess I would’ve tried to cope and adjust with it if they actually kept Annabeth’s character right and not make her into this warrior Ares child and instead keep her personality and traits. I think that Alexandria’s casting for Annabeth is not that liked by fans even if Alexandria had the same skin tone because they didn’t feel Annabeth in her because of the personality change. I think that there are people still supporting Lea despite her appearance because Rick’s assuring us that she is Annabeth and that she radiates Annabeth’s personality unlike what we got from Alexandria. Here’s what I feel about Leah: I respect her as a person and I hate that she gets so muh hate right now because of this casting. I don’t think she deserves those death threats right now and I don’t doubt her acting skills. She wasn’t really what I expected for Annabeth because I really wanted to see a blonde and grey-eyed twelve-year-old with a dyed black hair Walker Scobell but it looks like we aren’t getting that. I am a bit upset by it because scenes that we had from the book which I had a fixed picture of is now going to be altered and changed. Finally, when it come to trusting Rick: I still trust him despite these things. Rick is that one person who knows these books and characters and though I am upset that the casting is not as book-accurate as I expected, this is our only hope of an accurate adaptation and I just pray it would be worth it.

So, as someone who actually watched the movie of the first book several times before actually reading the series, I’m kinda seeing this from the opposite side. While I can understand people’s frustrations with how the movie was executed as far as story goes and all that, one thing that I didn’t have an issue with was the casting of the characters, simply because I didn’t have a basic idea of what they were supposed to look like. So imagine my shock when I read the books and see the official art that Percy actually has black hair and sea green eyes and Annabeth has blonde hair and grey eyes, and Grover (even though he wasn’t really described as anything at all in the books), is quite literally the polar opposite of the movie’s version. And for a while, when I read the books, all I could picture in my head, was the movie’s versions. Still do with some characters like Luke, and even Poseidon and Zeus. Now, that has changed of course for the main trio. But the way I’m looking at it, is that while it is disappointing that none of the characters are going to look like their book counterparts (and I’ll admit, when I first saw the casting for Annabeth specifically, I was disappointed), I think we can all agree that the character’s appearances, while probably the most complained about part of the movie, was a really insignificant issue when compared to how they butchered the characters’ arcs and the entire story. The main trio’s appearances are the most obvious, but the issues are much more deeply rooted in how the movies were executed. I can forgive that Annabeth isn’t blonde, and I can forgive that Percy doesn’t have black hair and sea green eyes. What’s not as forgivable is Grover’s personality swap, and Hades being portrayed as a shallow, abusive, war mongering god, when that’s nothing like his character, and the fact that the producers intentionally aged up the characters, simply so they could maybe sneak in a love interest, when in the book, Annabeth and Percy didn’t really even like each other much at all. They set aside their differences for the quest, and maybe had the start of a rocky, unsteady friendship at the end of the book. They were nowhere near the level of friendship Percy had with Grover, let alone lovers. Heck, they didn’t even kiss until Battle of the Labyrinth. We should be over the moon that we’re getting a reboot and that Rick is going to be a much bigger part of production to ensure we get the story we should’ve gotten the first time around. Now, I’ll side with you on the race swapping thing. As much as I’m tentative to even bring it up, it’s the giant, space consuming elephant in the room. While people want to claim that the people against Leah being Annabeth are simply being racist, that’s not entirely true (though I’m sure there’s a few of those people out there). While I don’t have an issue with the casting, I can see why people do. Because what you’re saying is completely true. I remember when the Last Airbender movie came out, with a white-washed cast for a show who’s entire character list, is of oriental/Asian/Inuit inspiration. And people lost their sh*t (and still would’ve even if it were only one or two characters). Because that’s racist to have white people play non white characters regardless of their acting ability. But suddenly it’s also racist to say that a black person shouldn’t act a white character? While I’d love to say that it’s inclusive to allow that, it’s also a slap to the face for not just the fans who expected book accurate characters, but to the people who tried the same thing from the opposite side and probably got mobs of people at their throat. And even worse is Rick, who instead of trying to calm down those people and reassure them of their worries and feelings of the casting, instead decides to basically insult his fans by calling them racist instead of trying to understand it from THEIR side even though the feeling is mutual with people of every race, not just white people.

Honestly though, I agree with what you mean about having not that much problem with the original cast because they were given a horrible script to begin with and they could've done their jobs properly if they were given two things: a good script and a good timing when they were age appropriate for the roles. About the race swapping, I agree too. It's considered horrible and racist if you race swap a character from black to white but it's oddly completely fine if it's a black actor/actress playing a white character. I want to give Rick the benefit of the doubt when it comes to that. About Rick calling the fans racist... I have to agree with what you said about that. Don't get me wrong, I love Rick. He's by far my most favorite author in the world and that's saying something because I've read a lot of authors to begin with. There's just something about his books that always pulls me into it and it makes me feel like I'm home. It's gotten to a point where I'm placing my full trust of this show on his shoulders as he's the author of these incredible books BUT I just don't like what he did about addressing the Leah hate. I agree that he should've seen what it was like from our side first before calling us racist because sure, there ARE fans who are racist. I get that. But, there are people who aren't racist and is just disappointed by the casting because Leah looks NOTHING like Annabeth. That's the thing. It's not that all the fans are racist. We're just shocked and disappointed that Leah doesn't look like Annabeth.

There were people getting angry in the time he DIDN’T say something. To those who are just disappointed about appearance, all that can be said is wait until the actual show comes out and if you don’t like it, don’t watch it. The funny thing is Grover is also white in the books, yet no one has an issue with it. Why? Bc he was black in the movies (also some misogyny) Believe it or not, those movies impacted more than you would think. Harry Potter was also not accurate to looks and yet now everyone imagines them like their movie counterparts. If done well and if the show becomes really popular and continues, in a few years, the book descriptions will be less remembered. As the previous replier mentioned, people who haven’t read the books aren’t going to notice, and they likely won’t care if/when they read the books later. You can claim it’s for the fans all you want, but movies and shows are literally never as good as the books no matter what anyone says. Adaptations are for money and new fans ultimately.

And then they made Annabeth blond in the second. What a surprise, it did nothing. Honestly I noticed that very rarely do adaptations not suck if they characters look exactly like their book counterparts. I’m still traumatized over Artemis Fowl. I don’t what it is bc there’s gotta be someone out there who can act and looks like the character. But maybe the impressive acting pool is smaller than we imagine. Honestly, I don’t think that the casting is really awful. Rick casted talented actors and actresses but like you, I also wanted book-accuracy and Rick didn’t really provide that. Probably except for Nancy Bobofit’s, Sally Jackson’s, Grover’s, and Mrs. Dodds’ casting but overall, the cast is almost unrecognizable from their book counterparts. So about Clarisse... I get it. Though I found her a bit intimidating in the photo, I did want a more muscular Clarisse. About Annabeth... if you’ve read the replies I’ve had to comments about her casting, then you’d know that I want to give Leah a chance even if I wish she was more book accurate. Also, I do agree with what you mean about casting black actors/actresses when the characters are ACTUALLY black. I agree. Rick’s reassuring us that Leah was casted as Annabeth because she has Annabeth’s personality and not because of the representation of a black actress as one of the main leads so I’m pretty much reassured that Rick did this not just because of representation. I mean, okay. Representation is important but there’s a lot of that in the later books so why cast an actress now for representation when there’s already established representation from the books?

Not many of the cast looks like the book descriptions annabeth being black is just the the main one people are complaining about for some reason.

Hi, there! I get where you're coming from. We were promised a book accurate adaptation yet the actors/actresses don't really look like their characters. Though upset with it, I think giving it a chance would still be worth it because from the trailers we have so far, it seems pretty book accurate in terms of storyline and according to Rick, he chose these actors/actresses based on their acting for the roles so that assures us that the even though they don't look like the characters, they still have the characters' personality right which is something we didn't get in the Percy Jackson movies.

These were my own thoughts when I first saw the cast list and I was disappointed that they didn't follow the books in terms of looks. Despite this, I'm trying to look past it because I'm pretty sure all of them are really talented actors/actresses who might be able to do the job well for their characters.

True. I mean, I get the reason why fans are dissapointed in the casting but it’s too far if death threats or bashing is happening just because of this. 👍

If we follow your reasoning, a very talented white actor can perfectly play a black character and nobody would have the right to say anything either, huh ?

@@benji285 let’s think about this. Annabeths race is not central to her story, her being white really doesn’t change anything in her story. But if you take a character in the minority and change their race that is erasure. There are so many stories of white people that you see people begging for a drop of representation. Making a black character white is so frustrating cuz we barely get that rep anyways. There are lots of stories of smart white blonde girls but name three smart black girls and I’m sure it’ll take you a minute more. People want representation, they want to see themselves on characters. It is fine to be disappointed that the character you like doesn’t look how you wanted them to but insisting that she must be played by a white person and not hearing any reason on why she is a perfectly fine actress is not acceptable. Leah is a 12 year old girl, the youngest out of the trio, and she is getting the most hate over something she can’t control. She was casted for a reason and it’s not because of her trace it’s because she’s a good actress. Rick Riordan has said that she is the perfect annabeth and anyone who says that she doesn’t deserve the role cuz she’s black is racist

@@Aardydarling Wow, ok, so it always comes back to "everyone can... except white people because, well, they're white people" ; systematic guilt of white people and systematic victimization of other ethnicities (especially black people), what a beautiful moral ; and there are people who wonder why racism is still so prolific when the answer is right in front of their eyes. This argument is as silly as it's hypocritical, especially since "ethnic minorities" (as you say) and a fortiori African-Americans have never been put forward so much (in part thanks to the "white- erasing") to such an extent that sometimes, it becomes ridiculous ; honestly, if there was an "ethnic minority" who would really be entitled to complain about under-representation, it would be the Native Americans, not only are they rarely seen on screen but they have also become one of the smallest ethnic groups on the American continent... such a tragic irony. And don't be naive, people in Hollywood don't care about the representation of "ethnic minorities", the only thing they care about is reaching a wider audience so they can make more money ; most of the time it is white bourgeois who are in charge. Same for the author of the saga, he can say what he wants but if he was really so concerned about ethnic diversity, he wouldn't have been systematically so specific about the Caucasian belonging of his characters. Another truth is that there are actually lots of people belonging to these "ethnic minorities" who do not appreciate this untimely modern practice bordering on caressing paternalism and condescension. About the young actress, attacking her personally is as mean-spirited as it's useless, that's undeniable. Fans have every right to be upset, but within reason. Although again, let's be honest, the showrunners knew full well what the consequences would be when they cast her, it could be called provocation at this point. They could very well have found a talented actress who matched the appearence of the character (pretend otherwise would be lie) and fill their "black actors quota" thanks to Grover who, unlike Annabeth, could perfectly have been played by a black actor BECAUSE, it would have fit his description, which is exactly why it has already been done in the last adaptation. Personally, it doesn't bother me that much that Annabeth appearance isn't respected, even if it's quite disappointing, it's not catastrophic either... as long as his mother Athena isn't played by a black actress, which brings me to the only point of this casting that is really problematic : Chiron, THE legendary fencing master of Greek heroes, THE immortal centaur from ancient Greece, played by an African-American actor from New York!!! They cast a greek-american actor to embody Dionysos aka "the God of drunkenness" but they didn't managed to find one for Chiron aka "the most badass of all the centaurs", or at least, one who can pass for a southern European. This is indefensible, it's just a huge snub to Greek culture. And it's a Sudanese-Frenchman who proclaims it.
