This short video is all about caring for our Dianthus in the middle of the season. Just after they have finished flowering their heaviest early summer flush, we come in and give them a shearing. I show exactly how to do so in this video! #dianthus #gardening #plantvibrations

I live in Pennsylvania and I have not done any deadheading or trimming for my flower however I want to properly prepare it for the winter. I’m assuming I’ll need to cut it like you did in the video? I also saw how I can just takeoff the dead flowers. So my question is, when should I do the different types of cutting down? Do I just remove the dead flowers after they bloom in the spring so I can see more in August, and then completely cut down the flower before winter? Thanks in advance!
@plantvibrations
@plantvibrations Жыл бұрын
typically the best time to do that sort of cleaning is around the date of the first frost. most of the perennials will be shocked from the cold and will turn black and yucky. thats your cue to remove the top foliage and flowers. but also check out my recent video about deadheading i made for more tips

Have you ever heard of the Chelsea chop. It’s been around for decades
@plantvibrations
@plantvibrations Жыл бұрын
Yes. This is slightly different from Chelsea chop bc you do the CC prior to flowering to push flower time back

Hey, just found this, perfect timing. My 3 year old Dianthus are stunning, but was wondering. Is it also beneficial to individually clip off dead flowers as they occur until giving it the big haircut?
@plantvibrations
@plantvibrations 3 ай бұрын
You absolutely can do that, although it can be tedious. I normally just do it all at once
@brianfuller5157
@brianfuller5157 3 ай бұрын
@@plantvibrations Definitely tedious. Your method is preferred, but I might trim here and there also just to clean it up until the big mid season "haircut". just wasn't sure if there was any plus or minus to the individual deadhead. Thank You
