According to Martin Hollis the director of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark he stated that the reason for the removal of the knife weapons in the Japanese version of Perfect Dark was because big incident that happened in Japan known as the Kobe Child Murders. This was a change that was also made in the Japanese version of Goldeneye 007.

Really appreciate the video! I just purchased a CIB JPN version on ebay (my very first official purchase to start my collection) before finding it. Perfect Dark was on my radar but once I saw that JPN box art, I had to have it.

I think I want to get my hands on the Japanese Box, Manual, Game. Also that ingame title screen with the Japanese text over the English text feels very Ghost in the Shell to me.

As someone who owns a PAL version, I can tell you right now there is no difference between the NA version and the PAL version. However, the German Release is the NA/PAL version with blood disabled as it came out in the tail end of Germany's ridiculous censorship laws.

Officially the game never came out in Germany. I had to import it from Austria where you find the hint "Nicht für den deutschen Markt bestimmt" on the box. In this PAL version, all the blood textures are fully intact.

Shame I have not found a game like that, edgy, misterious, techie and with deep story... I loved so bad the intro in the Japanese version, very intense!
