In this video, I explain why this is (in my opinion of course :) the best dust extractor for the average workshop! It is the Record Power Camvac dustextractor!

Video description!
What sets the Record Power Camvac apart from other dust extractors is its multiple motors. You can buy a Record Power Camvac with one, two, or three motors. Because of this, the Camvac creates a lot of air volume to be a good partner for the most demanding woodworking machines and creates enough pressure to handle the small handheld tools. This is one of the reasons I think it is one of the best Dust extractors you can get for the average workshop because you only need one dust extractor for all the equipment in your shop.
The Record Power Camvac does not have a diffuse air outlet. Because of this, it is the perfect dust extractor to build in your workbench! It is a relatively small dust extractor, and most important, because of the one or two air outlets, you can easily distribute the hot air that blows out of the camvac out of the cabinet you build it in.
Sound level
The Camvac is not the quietest dust extractor, but it could worsen with two motors. However, you can easily reduce this level by placing a vacuum hose on the air outlets. This reduces the sounds significantly, and I created a Whispering box that further improves the sound level.
Filtration
The Record Power Camvac had the best filtration in the market and filtered particles to 0.5 microns, where 1 micron is the average standard.

Thanks for the introduction to CamVac, I can see where this is a great solution for small to medium sized shops, including my own. To have enough power to pull from a jointer or planer is very important without having a giant 7 foot tall two stage system.

Hi Dennis, I have had my camvac for about 7 years now, purchased well before record power acquired the brand. I also split the hose to reduce the sound. I still added a steel dust deputy to it to extend the life of the filters. I still ended up adding another two extractors as on long runs I did find it dropping off. But a great extractor and I think we'll worth the investment. I really like the whisper box idea, as I added filters to the end but that reduced the exhaust flow rate, so I will have a go at making one. You also got me into the black mdf as well which creates a really lovely contrast. Great channel and love the China series, I have purchased quite a few products off the back of them.

Thank you for your video it was very instructive and was great in helping me select a dust extractor. I bought a CamVac CGV386-5 90 L 2000 W dust extractor and the suction was amazing but noisy 90dB. Then I build your whisper box which works great dropping the sound down to 78dB with both motors running, which is quite acceptable.

i took your video as inspiration and built my own quick'n' dirty silencer out of OSB and including a 180° turn inside the box. The difference is night and day. -5db (!) plus the high pitch noise cancellation!

Always enjoy your videos, all of them great & informative including the China Tools. A CamVac Dust extractor for a room size scale, multi-tools is a great setup; many DIY Woodworkers are like myself that don't have a dedicated shop, my garage converts to a temporary woodshop for a project. The smaller dust extractors (Makita, Festool, etc) that are much more than a glorified shop vacuum. I use a Festool 48AC Dust Extractor that I connect "directly to one tool at a time": track saw, circular saws, sanders, hand planer, etc. They may be smaller, but still a dust extractor that works great! I look forward to larger shop in future, I'll defiantly look apply your suggestions of design & hardware.

Great video. This system is interesting and different from what you see out there. I would be interested a detailed video of the layout, but what I would be the most interested in is the numbers. At the conclusion you can show the air flow at each tool in the system, with the length for each tool. Thank you!

These vacs are a beast! Far out perform the Festool extractor. I have 4 in my shop and with the hose silencer’s in place it is very quiet. I have one for my drum sander and the noise of the drum sander is louder than the vac.

Great minds , I bought one of these in January for all the same reasons and its been great so far. The suction is so strong the outlet covers pop off ,twin motors are working perfectly with my spiral block planner thickness. Can't recommend enough. Would love to see the bench build with dust kit added, the more workshop build videos the better please Dennis .

Hah, even on a normal planer head kicking off 330mm long shavings it doesn't choke. It sucks it all up without complaining barely leaving anything behind for cleaning.

Ok you sold me on the Cam Vac. Like you said I got a (cheap) Gamma workshop vacuum, and then a much larger but still cheap HBM extractor. Together it's far to big and bulky! If this thing can handle it all, it's definitely perfect for my small shop!

I managed to buy one of these second hand - a massive step up from my previous setup. One point on your extraction system, I had similar blast gates on my old system but I found that the closed back to the gate soon started to fill up with dust and then prevented the gate from closing properly. As they are glued together I couldn't get in to clear them properly. I've ended up building my own ones from mdf where the slide goes all the way through to solve this. Maybe the greater suction from the Camvac will prevent this happening.

Definitely think about giving some review of plumbing you did on your system. I have a good 3 motor cyclone that runs gated 4” pipes to all stationary floor tools, but need to make some improvements for smaller handheld tools

You should make a current detector relay for the dust extractor, so that it starts automatically when it senses you use a tool.

My dad is currently building his own dream wood workshop, as a beginner woodworker. He happened to have bought himself a Record Power dust bin too - so this video will be perfect for him! Nice video Dennis. I have an older version of the CamVac that was purchased before they were taken over by Record Power. It works great on the table saw, bandsaw and planer but be careful with handheld tools as I have burnt out one of the motors when using it with my random orbital sander. I can only assume that the airflow through the sander was not enough to cool the motor.

Does your older one have the option to only power on 1 motor like the one Dennis has? What you mentioned is the exact use case I was worried about. I was thinking of getting one of these if it could save me getting both a dust collector and a dust extractor for stuff like sanders.
