Here's my tip. Before you plant a new plant in either a newly purchased soil or making your own, fill a 4" nursery pot with only the soil mix. No plant yet. Water it thoroughly. Observe how it drains. Then just let it sit. Observe how long it takes to dry completely or if it ever does.

Good idea. I can usually tell by the weight of a pot if it needs water, but if I’m not sure, I stick a chopstick or some other thin wood stick in the soil, down by the roots, wait a few minutes, then see if the stick has absorbed moisture.

As a cheaper alternative to orchid bark, fir bark reptile bedding works really well. Same stuff, just a different package. It comes in different sizes, and is much cheaper. I have liked using it in my potting mediums so far.

My mixture is a coco coir/ perlite mix and I add vermiculite and worm castings. My plants LOVE this mixture. I give them a good soaking once a month, I've never had any rot or bad leaves on them. I've also never had any bugs in mine either. They love it.

How much vermiculite do you use in your potting mix? A handful? I really like the idea of having to water my plants once a month since my collection is growing (Despite my husbands objections😏) but I do not want to put too much where it would cause more damage than good.

pumice is heaps better than perlite, i find. perlite tends to pack down over time. coir (chips or otherwise) in a large pot can still get soggy, so i have more pumice (2-8mm) than coir and other ingredients.
@jannafolsom1069

100% same recipe. And I couldn't agree more about perlite. It is nothing but powder by the time I'm at the end of the bag. IF it isn't powder when I get it. Everything. All of it. I agree. Whole heartedly! My only add is that horticultural charcoal also adds drainage with very slight moisture retention.
@MaybeTiberius

i am thinking about switching away from perlite at some point to use something else. i mean really its just there to make it more airy...you could do that with basicly any stone like stuff, just add some small pebbles or some seramis maybe.. or even plain cheap cat litter. i still have tons of perlite i use up because they sell 100L bags here but the dusting on perlite makes it SO uncomfortable to work with. i feel like a mask isnt even working. you would have to do it outside because the perlite dust will still stay in the air for so long, you ll breathe it all in afterwards anyways. i like plants and plantcare and doing stuff with soil...but every time i have to get that perlite bag, i gotta vomit

how do you pre moist it tho? thats something i never get my head around because to pre moist it.. you have to somehow get it out of the bag aswell

@@MaybeTiberius yeah, it seems problematic, that's why I don't use it)) but other stuff gives away dust as well... I guess you just make a hole there and pour the water inside or... Shut your mouth and eyes, pour some in the bowl and then moisten that. Or take some with the spoon and put into water
@MaybeTiberius
@MaybeTiberius Жыл бұрын
@@darya5293 maybe its a good idea to just have a bucket of water nearby. use a kitchen sieve to get perlite out of the bag so fine dust might even stay in the bag and then dunk the sieve inside the bucket

Question: 🙋🏼‍♀️Probably a stupid question but if I use mosquito bit in Spag moss will it mold in there too? Only asking bc I have been having a fungus Kant issue and I have my Obliqua Peru in a huge like glass jar thing with moss and leca at the bottom for humidity. It is in a little pot, but I put the pot in the terrarium like vessel and I don’t want mold or anything to effect my baby. I was sketch when I did it but I only put a little. Should I redo it? Thanks 🙏🏻!!

you can also steep mosquito bits (or mosquito dunks) in water and then use the water to water your plant. that avoids the mold issue and is how the dunks are intended to be used i’m pretty sure

This might be a silly question but do you store the soil in that container with the lid on it? Should I be concerned about keeping it in an air tight container if the soil is still damp?
@Mrsfroggy55
@Mrsfroggy55 Жыл бұрын
Leave the lid opened a couple of days until it’s thoroughly dried otherwise it will create mold. If it does, just scoop out the mold. I had this experience once and now I just crack open the lid every so often. Not sure what’s the correct practice but I like to let it ventilate once in awhile. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I LOVE that they have gotten rid of 99% of the gnats BUT even still months later they mold over the top of my plants, everytime I water them, only thing that stops it is a liberal coating of cinnamon. Just wondering if others have this issue as well? (I live in SCar, and humidity is always high even in winter)

how do you go about fertilizer tho? because thats something i hear almost noone speak about. cococoir soil mixes have like zero nutricients in there. some go about and put stuff like wormcastings in to help but ive also read that the nature of coco coir might require to use something like calmag because it basicly binds calcium and magnesium to a point there is nothing left for your plant resulting in deficits?
