Fantastic tutorial! Many years ago my wonderful friend Louis Martelle explained a very special trick to me. Approaching a table in a restaurant you have a spectator select a card. You try and read their minds but fail. Finally you ask the spectator what was the name of the selected card? The performer also asks the spectators first name. E.g. Frank. The named card is located in the deck and written on the back are the words Franks Card! Louis and another magician called Hamilton Kaye helped me so much with my magic. Very sadly they are both no longer with us.

Could work as a great 1 ahead routine as well. "Think of any word" is said to the whole audience but the PS spectator thinks of the force word. Pick 3-5 people making sure one of them is the PS one. Proceed from there. As you know 1 word, you can gain the others using 1 ahead.

I think it would have been important to tell that this isnt something for a casual performance. So if you hang around with friends and maybe someone is arriving earlier DONT try to do this. The only exception is if you give a really good fake explanation on how you did it (Which is harder then it sounds). Because if you just do it the "plain" way (think of a word, you think of ___) then everyone will either think your friend is in on it or they will ask if he really just thought of the word right now, where the answer will be no. So yes, this is a good thing to do with strangers or a larger group where most of the people are strangers but not with your peers.

Man!! Thank you soo much I knew there were pre shows but I always had confusion about scripting in performance, like how to let them think about the same word without the other audience noticing it.. & this scripting is going to help me through.. thank you very very much man.. ♥️♥️

as someone who performs casually for mostly friends and acquaintances, pre-show never feels like a serious option. the next time my friends have a few moments together to reminisce on the performance and compare notes, the whole thing falls apart. I want the trick to be *done* once I am finished performing.

Late to the party here, but is this how so many TikTok users are “reading minds”. They appear to just walk up to somebody and guess what word or person they are thinking of.

Whatever method you’re using for this trick it must be diabolical. This is as fair as can be. As far as we kno u don’t peek the top card but even if u did there’s no steps she has to follow so that shouldn’t even matter... my mind is telling me their has to be a stack somehow in play. Regardless of how u did it fabulous effect. It’s simple and to the point and that’s the most shocking thing about. If this works 80% of the time you should be proud man. Very well done.

He makes a standard cornerstone of any TV magic production and thinks it’s novel to “teach” it. But it lacks some or the subtleties. If you do this you need to justify it and even make it miraculous for them too. So if you’d force the word house you would say draw it in your mind in your own style. And you draw a standard house and say: “this looks like the way you draw a house?!” It’s ambiguous wording if they don’t draw the standard square with triangle and 4 pane window it is still close. So for them it’s now solely the word you read but the way they drew it in their mind. I preshow for my effect 1 face in 4 billion (there’s a manuscript on it) where I use a Svengali deck with facial features. I force the card with blue eyes, short blond wavy hair, thin lips, fair skin, boy around 19 years old. And I let them make up a face in their mind. All the while behind them the photo of the person or that story (the nameless faceless soldier) is on the screen. And they describe blue eyes, fair skin, wavy blond hair, thin lips. And I ask them to turn that image in their mind in black and white, and turn and see how similar the face is on the screen. They look and they cannot disagree it’s really close and I reaffirm this by saying: “your mind created this face, you definitely recognize it!” And it hits them because they don’t have a lot to go on and I throw the life buoy and their brain grabs it and they remember eventually having created that face 1 in 4 billion! And for them that makes the experience even bigger than for the audience describing the character trades which is already magical. And they get reaffirmed because the person on stage says it’s the face they created! Preshow is too often done without “adding” to it for the person. So if you preshow add something on top of it that they couldn’t expect.

Seems like an awfully big leap of faith to hope that they decide to think of the same word? You'd need to have a good 'out' for the times it goes wrong.
