I've been doing pull-ups for years now and i start every workout with at least 40 in reps of 10. I've gotten to the point thaybi can knockout 25-30 straight with good form. The thing is I've always known these tops and I apply them with every rep and still cannot properly engage my lats. Obviously I have gotten stronger over the years and increased my reps tremendously but all I get is arm activation from pull-ups

@rogersyversen3633 5 жыл бұрын
Front lever is so hard to do in strict form. I've had this exercise in my program now for 2x4 month periods and I cant do it, I just do it with bent knees and one leg when I am in good shape. Anyone could get there with enough effort, but I only have time for 2x2 hour sessions a week (two different full body workouts), and I have front lever only once a week.

Leaning back seems like a good tip. I tried assisted pull ups today and two days ago but I dont feel my lats. Do I keep the shoulders pulled back the whole time? Or do I go back to dead hang each rep?
@N1022
@N1022 2 жыл бұрын
Although going to a dead hang each rep is considered a full range of motion on pullups for many people, I think going to a dead hang each rep can decrease tension in one's lats to some extent, which is not a very good thing if you are focusing on trying to get the most lat gains from pullups. Personally, I also feel the tension in my lats decrease when I dead hang each rep (but that's when I just merely focus on the range of motion and not really on focusing on keeping as much tension as possible in my lats). Maybe try to go to a dead hang while still keeping as much tension as possible in your lats, and at the time you reach a full dead hang, pull yourself back up instead of like waiting for some seconds, maybe that's going to help getting more lat gains than let's say resting a few seconds in a dead hand after each rep. But you're definitely going to fatigue after a specific number of reps, leading you to rest for a while, which I personally don't really mind about that happening when I'm doing pullups. When you pull back up each time, retract your scapula, as that is shown to more activate your back - not just your lats, also your traps, rear delts, and some other back muscles - as far as I know. Generally, people will still make gains even if they rest their back by utilizing the dead hang. Just try to progressively overload while still trying to dial in your form and technique. Hope this helps!

what can you do if you have no bar to activate all these back muscles? have some advice? (and having no access to a gym), I do have dumbbells... I know this is a calisthenics channel but maybe you have some advice for me
@TappBrothers
@TappBrothers 5 жыл бұрын
Great question, and you mentioned you have dumbbells, you can definitely work the back with those, the "bent over row" is one of the best exercises for lat activation. Great substitute. Also there is the bodyweight option of reverse push up. AthleanX demonstrates this exercise here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mdmqfcaD35u5cmQ.html But honestly I think for you, the bent over row with your dumbbells, will suit you best for range of motion and weighted resistance. Train safe and thanks for watching

@TappBrothers I was wondering if you know some other things I could do, I have kind of an imbalance in my knee, it's just 1 knee, I had a dislocated kneecap 2x, and I really have to do something about it, i'm doing squats, they help a bit, but I have a feeling there are other things I can do to help it improve, do you guys have any suggestions of what I can do? (I also had exercises in past to stretch my whole leg, and few others... from the physiotherapist).

@adamsloane1748

You don't know how to spell "recommend." Your technique also turns the pull up into a row by emphasizing pure shoulder extension at the expense of adduction, shifting the focus to rhomboids, rear delts, and mid traps. That's okay, but it's not a superior way to activate the lats.
@adamsloane1748
@adamsloane1748 Жыл бұрын
@Zaid Alsaad It can be really difficult to feel the lats during pull ups. The pull up is so difficult that just completing the rep in good form often becomes the center of attention, so that it becomes difficult to focus on a particular muscle. And the pull up is not an isolation movement. A lot of muscles can and should contribute. I do think that certain activation exercises with exercise bands can help "wake up" the lats and increase the chances of feeling them in pull ups. If you throw a loop band around your pull up bar and do pull downs (especially at a 45 degree angle), straight arm pull downs, and adductions, that can help. In addition, Micha Schulz has some great tips on activating the lats in pull ups in one of his KZfaq videos. I have tried his tips and I think they work.
