Welcome to ROCKMAN 101 BASICS! Our new video series!
David Accomando (www.PerfectSoundRockRefurbs.com) takes us through Video #1 "Guitar Setup". The Rockman rack setup he is using (thanks Rick) is a suggested basic setup (without the Dist Gen or Guitar Comp modules) that works very well for most people.
David gives us a look inside his preferred Les Paul guitar setup. Now, we are not saying that this is the 'only' way to setup your guitar, but rather it's a tried, tested and true guide to help you.
NOTE: These videos were recorded using a quality Sony DV-CAM PD-170A camera. Please keep in mind that the quality of the guitar & Rockman equipment sound will depend entirly upon your computer's audio card and the speakers connected to it. These videos were meant to be used as instructional information and for sound comparisons within the context of these videos. that is one sexy RACK....i had plenty of those back in the day, loved my XPR....and i even had an xp100. did a lot of gigs with my sustainor.chorus.delay.eq setup. the scholz stuff was way ahead of the times...

I enjoy all the rockman effects that I own. I have had them all refurbed by perfect sound rock refurbs. They fuction even better now that they are all fixed. Recently I have just assembled them into a new rack with a new stereo amp to really bring out the chorus and echo.

I appreciate your comments. Not sure if Tom owns anything but Rockman and custom equipment...but rest assured...his Rockman equipment is not the same as what the general public has. It is tweaked specifically for him. In fact, some of his processors were never offered to the public for this reason. For example, he uses a "tape saturation" module in his setup. Nobody knows exactly what it is...except for him and his engineers. I do not use any other preamps besides Rockman preamps...

This is possible, but because of the value and historical significance of the Echo, I do not like to modify them in this way. I like to keep them functioning as originally intended...

I like your vids! Have you ever used an Rocktron Pirahna Preamp? I love that original authentic Boston sound and "TONE" but could never duplicate it precisely".I had the sustainer and the x100 box but still sounded phoney". The Pirahna of course is real tubes and it can nail any hotrodded Marshall tones and the ever so popular "AUTHENTIC" boston guitar sound you hear on all the early records.Mid Sweep!..I bet Tom has 1 of these in his studio and stage!

Dear Dave, do you if it is possible to modify the Rockman Echo, to use an expression pedal, for the delay, instead of having to adjust by hand?

Hi Dave. I picked up an mint rack sustainor/chorus-delay. (Blue) I run my Carvin tone navigator preamp into a ADA Microtube 200 and that sounds fabulous and true amp sound and feel. When I plugged the Rockman(minus the chorus/delay) it doesn't sound good. Where's the big bad full bodied Boston sound I hear live? I actually posted the Rockman rack on local craigslist, but I was just tinkering some more. So, I plug it into the return of my Carvin(I am a dedicated tube man though)SX-300 solid state amp. Still sound all midrange sqwanky and boxeyness. Frustrated".. So then I just plug it into the front end of the SX-300 and use the clean channel... "BOOM"!! there it is!! All the massive sustain and spungy alive harmonic ringing sustain grind(and real Marshally plexi-800 crunch with the BOSTON sound!! Man".. Talk about hitting paydirt! I think the reason is because it needs the EQ BASS-MID-TREBLE added to make the preamp come alive. This preamp is Amazing!! I have an old article in guitar player where Tom says he uses what he always has... A Rockman sustainer through the front end of a Marshall super lead 100. Guess that explains things!!

Good Morning, Honestly, the Sustainor was designed for and sounds best through multiple pre and post EQ's, along with the other Rockmodules, and then pumped into full range PA power amps. Remember, Rockman speaker cabinets contain a 15", 10" mid driver, and a bullet tweeter. Rockman stacks are essentially large PA systems. Even the Rockman 500 power amp is a full range solid state PA power amp (not a guitar power amp). Getting the authentic Boston sound is subject to opinion, because it depends on which albums you are speaking of. Third Stage and everything after was recorded direct with Rockman equipment. Only the 1st and 2nd albums had modded Marshalls pumped through power soaks and tons of EQing. If you are a dedicated tube man, you may want to have a separate Rockman system containing all solid state equipment to get the pure Rockman sound. The lows and highs are incredible through the proper equipment. BTW, the sound you hear live is all Rockman, heavily EQ'd of course. The only tubes Tom runs through is his Echoplex, which adds a bit of warmth to his sound. There is much more to the Boston/Rockman sound though. It is quite a science.

perfectsound500 I am not against solid state at all. I do believe their are performance improvements with a solid state electron flow. More direct sustain to the speakers faster". I am now guessing that the Rockman EQ modules should do what my amp head is doing for the sustainer for adding the EQing to the preamp. I will have to investigate on finding a good full range PA. How are those Carvin PA's? I'm not trying to cop the Boston sound so to speak, just after a kick ass rock guitar tone... which it delivers! I am getting a full thick real amp sound and tone with no thinness going through the amp head. If the sound might be improved with a better? power amp setup, then all the better! :-)

perfectsound500 Dave, btw, any heads up on where I can find an RMC head case? Or any who can make the same thing? RMC went out of business..

With a well put together Rockman system, you will definitely have an amazing guitar sound. You will NOT have the Boston sound. Only Tom has the Boston sound, as he has things going on that are specific to him, but you WILL have a great guitar sound much like Tom's.
