Welcome to Ortega dental care, my name is Elham Zarnegar registered dental hygienist. Peri implantitis is an inflammatory process affecting and destructing the supportive component surrounding dental implants including soft tissue(gum) and hard tissue(bone).
Leading causes contributing to peri implantitis includes, poor oral hygiene, smoking and uncontrolled diabetes.
At initial stages soft tissue becomes inflamed and infected and if left untreated the infection will eventually advance to bone structure holding and supporting implant in place.
Early symptoms of peri implantitis can include red and inflame gum line, bleeding upon brushing, persistent bad breath and taste that does not resolve with routine home care, mobility and discomfort of implant itself.
To treat peri implantitis first a complete evaluation needs to be conduced by your dentist, depending on the severity of the condition your dentist might choose surgical or non surgical approach to treat the affected area.
