This color promotional film is about the evolution of fighter aircraft including the new Grumman F-14 Tomcat. No copyright but this is circa 1974.
Opening: A man climbs into a plane. A man climbs into a jet. A plane with a propeller takes off. A jet takes off. The back of the jet has flames shooting out of it as it takes off into the sky (:08-1:46). A bi-plane takes off. A bi-plane flies in the sky. A bi-plane with a gun turret for the flier is used. An aircraft battle in 1917. Bi-plane performs a trick in the sky. Two all metal planes: ME-109 and Spitfire. They fly fast in the sky. POV from the cockpit of an ME-109. A Spitfire turns quickly (1:47-4:32). U.S. fighters: P-38, P-47 and P-51. P-51 flies in the sky. Japanese flew lightweight Zero planes. A Zero flies quick. Hellcats and Corsairs were USA planes as well. Russians developed new planes. F-86s, Russian Mig-15s fly. MIG-17, Mig-19, Mig-21s were all made by the Soviets. U.S. planes used sparrow missiles during the Vietnam war. Missiles are fired (4:33-8:24). U.S. soldiers in a control room. F-4 Phantom jet lands on a battleship. A F-4 lands and is directed where to go. U.S. Fighter pilots walk towards their planes. A man enters the cockpit, puts on his helmet (8:25-10:07). A jet takes off. A pilot in an F-8 vs two pilots in an F-4. F-4 has better radar. F-8 inside the cockpit. The planes engage in pursuing one another. POV footage of both planes as seen from the cockpits (10:08-13:02). Behind the plane is shown from both planes, the F-4 and F-8. The planes go upside down and rightside up and back again. The F-8 comes in for a landing (13:03-15:14). Captain Scott Lamoreaux speaks to the viewer about Soviet aircraft threats. A Russian jet is shown. The 'Foxbat' is another Russian jet. A Russian plane drops a cruise missile. A Russian boat fires a missile as well (15:15-17:39). Pilots discuss over a beer. Commander Pete Carroll speaks on American fighter shortcomings. Commander Sam Leeds then speaks. Commander 'Tooter' Teague also speaks (17:40-19:18). Animation sequence of a cat going to the beach. A bear throws an airplane at the cat and it flies around annoying him as he tries to read the newspaper. He grabs it. The bear cries and his father confronts the cat who hands the plane back. The papa bear then grabs the cat, makes him into a ball, and whacks him with a hammer. The cat soars through the air and meets a dog police officer. The cat reads a book about becoming a good fighter. The cat boxes a punching bag with boxing gloves. he then goes back and punches the bear who puts him in a garbage can. The cat reads the same book and lifts weights. He rushes to the beach and punches the father bear but the kid bear hits the cat with a hammer (19:19-21:50). In the same book, the cat reads and then seats vegetables. He heads to the beach, its foggy, he can't see and the papa bear kicks him into the water where he's punched by an octopus. The cat looks at a picture of a bikini clad bear female. He then heads to the beach, hits the father bear, whacks the kid bear on his behind. His father grabs the cat and the kid bear closes the screen tighter and makes it smaller into a slingshot, the father launches the cat through some homes. Another lesson in the book and the cat punches a bunch of punching bags. The kid bear winds his airplane and throws it, the cat runs to the beach an punches both bears. The plane hits him in the eye and gives him a blackeye. Another lesson and the cat does every exercise. He goes to the beach, punches the two bears, more bears show up, he takes them out, and then he puts up an RIP tombstone with a number count (21:51-24:08). The cat gets a diploma and is celebrated. The symbol of the Tomcat. The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is an American supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, twin-tail, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft. It was the first such U.S. jet fighter with twin tails. The F-14 takes off into the sky.The plane does a flip in the air. Commander Jim Taylor and Fred Winton speak on the plane. Flying shots of the F-14 flying and moving. Cockpit radar (24:09-27:59). Commander John Thuente speaks on the F-14. F-14 radar. The plane flies. A pilot turns around and looks behind him due to space inside. An F-14 takes off into the sky. F-14 flies upside down. Row of F-14s (28:00-30:48). Commander Tom Cassidy speaks on the F-14. The F-14 on the runway, it races down and takes off (30:49-33:37). No end credits.

RIP Tomcat! The first I heard of it was on the way home to San Diego from Guam in the early 70's. At the same time I lamented the Crusader getting turned out of service. And now it's the Tomcat. Bummer! I always wanted to be a Eagle Jockey, but still consider the F-14 a better plane than any version of the Hornet to this day! If any Hornet Jockey would like to explain to me how shorter fuel range and less maneuverability is a plus, I welcome you to educate me on the subject. Warning! The last aviation job I had was working for a F-18 mechanic as A&P. Hell, now that I think of it, I worked for a guy who helped design the Phoenix AIM-54 system for the Tomcat! RIP! I feel sad. More so than I did at the loss of the Crusader on our way home from Guam back in 72.

F14 and F18 are equally the most beautiful “machines” , as you wrote for F14. Along with F4 in the late 50s. If F18 had the engines of F14, and could carry the same load of missiles, then F18 would be the perfect navy fighter. Don’t forget also that The f14 was crafted in order to substitute the F4 in late 60s

Been telling people about it for years too. No doubt the guys that made Top Gun saw this video too because there are so many things from the video that are in the film.

The RAF looked hard at the F-14 to fulfill the interceptor role that the Tornado ADV was being developed for, but cost and national pride stopped us buying it. We ended up with an aircraft that took 6 years to develop ( despite it being based on an existing airframe ), cost way more than first projected and was second rate in terms of flight envelope and avionics. It wasn't much good above 20,000 feet, couldn't hack it in BFM and only right towards the end of its life did it get a radar that worked as advertised. We should have swallowed our pride and bought the F-14 instead.

The only advantage I see in this situation was that at least you had an indigenous plane and kept the know-how in your country. A country that stop designing its own aircrafts may permanently lose that ability after a few decades, and stay dependant on other so-called "allied" countries (that can turn on your back any moment in case of war). I'm pretty happy France still design planes, missiles, radars,...and worried they might stop it in the future.

People talk about small, lightweight dogfighters, the Navy officers hit the nail on the head. It is all about endurance and having long legs. A big fighter like F-14 carried 4 - 5 times the fuel of F-16. The more fuel you can carry, the longer you can stay in Zone 5 full afterburn meaning the more time you are generating maximum thrust without fear of running out of fuel (hence cutting power). The more you can stay in Zone 5, the maximum performance and energy you will have to make extreme combat maneuvers.

When all the TEEN FIGHTERS came out. The F14 was the only plane with the RANGE (RADAR and Missiles). Like other videos. By the time you realize you are under attack, you are DEAD. Never saw the PHOENIX coming. The AUG9 has 3 times the Range, the PHOENIX was 5+ times the range and twice the speed. F15, 16 and 18, talk about DOG FIGHTING. You can't dog fight if you don't see the other guy. I knew several F14 crews and they always told me, an F14 in a dog fighter status, "STUPIDITY. You never should of got yourself into this situation". Another advantage to the PHOENIX system, could fire all 6 at the same time, where the TEENS, fired, wait, wait, wait for detonation and then fire again.

The F-14 was a terrific jet, but it wasn’t really designed for close in ACM against a light agile threat. I try think it would have been a close thing if we were in an air superiority fight against Russian pilots in MiG-29 & Su-27 aircraft.
@KLRGT500KR
@KLRGT500KR 2 жыл бұрын
@@thomasfx3190 Its most primary role was designed as an air superiority by going Mach 2+ and intercepting the Soviet fighters, bombers as far away from the fleet. However, the reason F-111 failed and F-14 was born was because of Vietnam war lessons and F-14 needed to be good at dogfighter (they used MIG-21 and MIG-17 as baseline for F-14 to be better than by 25% since the F-4 struggled against them) as well as a long range fast air to air fleet defender. F-14 had incredible maneuverability especially for its size. For that, it had a 360 degree cockpit, maneuvering flaps/slats that could give it a turn rate of over 24 degree/second, a gun and had the ability to pull AoA up to 90 degree with ease giving high G availability/low wing loading. could do a full MRT 360 in only 19 seconds Later on the F-14 B/D had a better than 1:1 thrust to weight in combat configuration. That is why, F-14 would out-class the pure interceptors like Tornado F3, MIG-23 or MIG-25s very easily in ACM. The airshow videos of F-14 dancing is a great example in the hands of 'Snort'. You mentioned MIG-29s, as a matter of fact F-14 handily beat the MIG-29 (Luftwaffe) in 1998 6:0 in Spain in ACM exercises with the Germans (Black Aces high book has the detail). Some of it comes down to the pilot. There are also several HUD videos of F-14 getting locks on those MIG-29s in turning fights. There are plenty of examples of 'Okie', 'Digger', 'Snort; 'Heater' etc. who cleaned the clock of other pure dogfighters like USAF F-16s. There is a good example of an USAF F-16 pilot came to Miramar to do ACM exercises with USN Tomcats. 'Digger' responded to his call and he did not know who 'Digger' was and went 1v1 against him. 'Digger' completely cleaned his clock every time. It was because F-14 was a pure stick/rudder plane without any electronic nannies so if a skilled high-time pilot wanted it to push it to the limit with skills, it would do exactly what the pilot wanted it to do as long as they could control it at the edge and keep the plane from departing in say, a Pirouette turn.

F-14 internal fuel: 16,200lb External: 3,800lb Total: 20,000lb F-16 internal fuel: 7,000lb External w/2 EFTs: 5,000lb Total: 12,000lb In combat configurations, you're looking at a 5:3 ratio of fuel in the F-14 vs F-16, nowhere near a factor of 3-4. This is basic math. F-14 absolutely could carry more payload and had more endurance, but rarely carried a max A2A payload operationally.

@@bobbycvsixfour5258 F-15 was superior to the F-14 in the BVR fight fighter vs fighter. F-14 community quietly had a ton of respect for USAF F-15 Grey Eagle drivers and did everything to glean what they could from them, even bringing select F-15C Weapons School Instructors into the F-16N program at TOPGUN to teach BVR employment of the Radar and how to manage the BVR timeline. F-14A/AWG-9 struggled to work over land, when it did work.

It's funny how they describe the Tomcat in these early films. Grumman was really proud of what they produced for the Navy. The Navy.... cost issues aside, they really dropped the ball on giving the plane the support it needed for badly-needed safety upgrades. In particular, the whole engine issue. They spent a quarter-billion dollars to fix it but the TF30 didn't grow in thrust and the TF30 still failed at the worst possible times! They had the F110 available in prototype form in 1981 but DELAYED until 1984 before making the decision to re-engine AND produce new Tomcats with it... The F-14B didn't make into the fleet until 1987 and wasn't fully available until 1989! What's worse -- the politics surrounding the F-14D cancellation and the aftermath of that "genius decision." Somebody in the Navy now has to realize how completely stupid it was to abandon long-range, multi-mission air superiority planes in favor of Swiss army knives -- the knives are rather dull and NOT quite as good as promised...

@@Remyrezable F-14 was a very technical fighter to fly, but had much higher limits if the pilot could control all of the huge moving surfaces. In order to stall the TF-030 engines, the pilot had to do multiple things wrong. 1) have a very high angle of attack 2) allow the speed to drop too much for airflow pressure to drastically reduce 3) rapidly move the throttle from full power to idle and back to full power 4) rapidly give rudder input. Most of the expert F-14A pilots with higher flight hours had no issues with the TF-030 engines. Besides, the F-14+/B/D had the GE-110 engines that had no stalling issues and made 60,000 lbsf of thrust. They could match or outclimb the F-15C version.

Did he mention one important fact that gets by most people today? The World War II fighters had two, three very important faults built into the airframes... Most people who know about piston engines/propeller-driven planes know about engine torque that tends to make the plane want to wander to one side or the other depending on where the propeller rotates. The only piston/propeller-driven planes that don't have torque issues are twin- or multi-engine planes that have counter-rotating propellers. Torque definitely dampens roll-rate in ONE direction. Roll-rate's another thing... The WWII planes didn't have roll rates approaching anything like today's jets or acrobatic planes like the Su-28. The roll rate was less than 100-degrees per second for any of these planes. Less than 180-degrees per second is considered slow today! The latest fighters approach 260 degrees per second roll-rate and that's not even the highest I've heard for a jet. The old A-4 Skyhawk could max out close to 720-degrees per second but it was considered VERY dangerous to do in that plane and not recommended -- you could swap ends if you tried to roll that fast. The WWII fighters also had nasty departure characteristics. They didn't have digital computers to trim the planes OR monitor fuel flow and how the fuel was distributed through the plane. One of the big things they HAD to do when they flew P-51s was dry out the tank located immediately BEHIND the pilot before they started drawing fuel from the drop tanks. The plane was out of trim and very unstable unless they used up the fuel in that tank first. That's a little "gotcha" about that particular plane that isn't written about in a lot of books about the P-51 or World War II planes in general. I bet more pilots were killed by the particular "gotcha's" of their planes than actual combat. Many of them probably didn't even make it past basic training in their types. NONE of these planes were perfect -- such a thing doesn't exist even today BUT in general today's planes are more stable, far more ergonomic as far as cockpit layout and view out the canopy are concerned, and you generally have to flip a lot less switches to actually fire weapons than they did in World War II. I love the P-38 design but that plane had to have killed a fair share of its pilots because of poor cockpit design. You had to throw at least 7-8 switches before combat and they weren't all located conveniently within the pilot's field of vision. You had to look within the cockpit and sometimes FEEL BEHIND YOU to find them. The quality of training in general was poor compared to today and I wonder how many people were killed before they developed ergonomics for military equipment... It seems so basic today but people should realize that most of these planes went through at least a half-dozen production designs before they were "perfected!" The real reason WHY they were so eager to capture islands closer to Japan in the Pacific was because the B-29 engines were regularly catching fire or exploding during missions... They didn't perfect those engines until AFTER the War!!!!

@@AvengerII yea that’s pretty true, only amendment being that they never really fixed the r-3350s used by the b-29. They were actually pretty badly designed with many flaws and even after the war in use in commercial airplanes, mechanics often found valves and other parts that had come out in the exhaust filter after a flight. In fact, Curtiss Wright was known for producing low quality works and the engine was no different, the only reason they went with it was that there really wasn’t anything else at the time capable of producing similar power with the needed fuel efficiency as well.

In the 18:00+ area all they are wanting is range. We need a plane who can fight 500-600+ miles and not worry about fuel. They even used the term meaningful range, long legs, etc etc. Speed. Do we have that today with a 35 or a 18? Also multiple threats at once, beyond visible range, distance, etc. Like the reason for the 35. We had all this already. But modernized planes don't make money like brand new designs. Couldn't we have slapped a whole bunch of modern electronics on the 14. Sad they dismantled, destroyed all the F14 inventory we had. They should have went with the Super Tomcat 21.

I'm sorry but the comparison of the F-86 and MiG-15 was really off. And it didn't just maintain a margin of victory, the F-86 had one of the best, most decisive air combat records in history, with about 10 MiG-15s shot down for every F-86. The MiG-15 did have certain advantages, rather like the Zero of WWII, especially in terms of climb rate and ceiling, but the Sabre turned better, was a much more stable aircraft, infinitely more well built, and was faster both horizontal and in a dive. To say the US sat on its hands totally after WWII and did not develop aircraft is also quite off base. The level of expenditure and development may not have matched the frenzied pace of totalitarian Stalinist Russia, but there were huge progressions even with a limited budget. At any rate the rest is fun but i thought that kind of a dumb way to try to start framing how the US lost its lead in air superiority. That problem came later, and had at least as much, if not more, to do with training and tactics than it did real failures in the hardware. As in, for God's sake, don't try to get into a turning fight with a small, nimble MiG-17 if you're in a -105 with a wing loading of about 120 lb/ft2. Use your thrust and go vertical!

To be fair, the F-86 kill ratio wasn't QUITE that good. Maybe in some months it was 10:1 -- when the Russians weren't flying! -- but later analysis showed the kill ratio was barely 3:1 in the Sabre's favor I think. Both sides included planes that were lost for reasons other than combat and I think propaganda was the motivation for making those kill ratio claims. Yes, in general the MiG pilots weren't as well-trained but the Russians who DID fly were World War II veterans in more than a few cases. Frankly, I think the F-86 from all I've heard and read had better controls, was MUCH better built and didn't have the awful wing warp problem the MiG-15 had, and that radar sight helped so much the Russians copied it from an F-86 wreck they salvaged!

AvengerII - They called those Russian veterans "Honchos" and they gave American pilots all they could handle. There was this show I used to watch where Robbie Risner told his story about a dogfight he had with a Honcho and it was amazing stuff. That Russian was one gifted pilot. I'll paste a link below when I find it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/odSDmJiks9-2mHk.html

Does anyone know if one of the models shown at 15:27 is what they initially believed the Mig-23 looked like? Also I don't need to be anymore descriptive than that, if you need clarification on which model I'm talking about then you most likely have zero knowledge on combat aircraft.

The first person to figure out and market hand hold rails like combat aircraft have that help the crew crane around and seems to be a requirement to check 6. Anyone flying in VR know how much of a pain in the ass it is to check your 6. We need something that we can mount where needed and be removable so you don't have to permanently attach one or several beams built into the floor and ceiling. Whoever can do that and market it should make some good money.

Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous KZfaq users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do. Love our channel and want to support what we do? You can help us save and post more orphaned films! Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/PeriscopeFilm Even a really tiny contribution can make a difference.
