I was born in '74 and started out with old beater carburetor cars (early '80s models that were +/-10yo at the time), they trained me to always start the engine BEFORE putting on the seat belt in case I needed to mess with something under the hood. Usually some form of percussive maintenance.

I just disabled the one on my car. I kid you not. You turn the key on and cycle the buckle 20 times. With the alarm off. Radio bye cruise control don't work till you buckle up

That toll booth guy was cute! I loved all that young lady's outfits she wore in the first film too. And that baby car seat, oh my Lord. I think my parents Nova had this seat belt system cuz I remember my dad having it deactivated. We never wore our seat belts in the Nova. My how times have changed.

I was born in 73 so I had to be about 4-5. I recall some PSA about wearing seatbelts and asked my parents why we didn't wear ours. Since then we did, probably a good 4-5yrs before it was law. Haha no, I'm not looking for a cookie or kudos 🤣 It's just odd the crap that pops in your head and I figured I'd share.

When I turned 16 in 1972 I got my grandfather's 1969 Buick Electra to drive. After about a week of seeing Fasten Seat Belts printed above the steering column I buckled up the lap and shoulder belts one night just for the heck of it. Aside from the obvious safety aspect, I was amazed at the enhanced handling and overall feel of the car when strapped in especially in spirited driving. It became an automatic habit to buckle up. With a friend in the passenger seat, it was rare to get anyone to use the lap belt, let alone the shoulder belt. Back then safety wasn't cool. I didn't think it was cool to eat the steering wheel or go through the windshield.

Oh yes. The great engineers at GM put the wiring connectors in a easily accessible location so it was easily disabled by the consumer. Who wants an electrical version of a mosquito in your ear?

This was mandated is why it was installed but congressed pass a law overturning the mandate. And yeah I think they intentionally made it really easy to bypass.

Been driving chevy vans for about 22 years now. Always used, never let me down. The very first van I had was a 77 Ford econoline. I got it for about $50 in 1990. Was badly rusted and the ignition module was broken so I installed a toggle switch to start it. lol. Kept it for about 6 months and went to chrysler station wagons for 6 years before making the move to Chevy vans. Got a 82 Chevy vandura for about $200 my friend owed me so he gave me his van instead, without even asking me. Drove it to hell and back never let me down. lol. Currently have a 2009 Express that is pretty used up but still going strong. I will drive vans until the bitter end. Can't beat the convenience of knowing you can go to any store and take home anything you want and it is perfectly protected.

My childhood friend’s Mom had a Chevy Nova and we were forbidden to ever UNbuckle the front seatbelts! They were left fastened and unused so the buzzer would not come on. Safety schmafety, it was the 1970s- lol

they need to bring the system back for turn signals. Maybe it won't let you turn left or right without putting on a turn signal. Since people have forgotten that they even have that option checked on their option box for their vehicle.

I Always buckle up. But, even WITH the three-point seat belt, Older cars weren't as safe. They didn't have any airbags, and crumple zones weren't yet perfected. Braking and Steering have also improved.

Congress voted to stop it before the 1975s came out. From then on, the buzzer would sound for maybe 10 seconds, but you could still drive.

what chevy doesnt tell you is..ford was first with a hood and forward engine design...also ..chevy doesnt tell you that its front fenders are bolted and welded on at the same time..and chevy also doesnt tell you that ford outsells the chevy van...they were really the f150 is their day

Had the chance of driving a Chevy G-20 and a Econoline back then and the Ford was my favorite hands down. One of the pros was that the front axle was in front of me and not under me. The Ford drove like a car and not like a shitty Volkswagen Van like the Chevy did.

I'm glad they made this illegal for them to mandate, that's crazy you could be about to escape being robbed or kidnapped but your car wouldn't start because the seat belt wasn't fastened so you get caught. And it doesn't even make people who don't want to wear them use the seat belt anyways since they'll just buckle it behind them or stick something in the buckle to trick it, and if they're really determined they'll modify the system to bypass it.

This goofy system only lasted for one model year as I recall. If the system failed to work in the rain you would get drenched in order to push the override button. If you were in a bad neighborhood you would be risking your life attempting to start the car. Now we have that awful start /stop system that is suppose to save fuel. I really wish we could keep vehicles as simple as possible.

Back then very few people buckled up or really cared about safety. I was one of the rare teenagers that wore both the lap and shoulder belts in my used 1970 Buick Electra. They saved me one night in a head on collision with a Cadillac that crossed the center line and hit me head on.

Good looking 1974 Impala Sport Sedan, Chevy Van, and very attractive ladies! Women were very classy back then like the lady or girl next door! Nice family too! Back in the good old days when vehicles were better looking, had character, not homely looking jelly beans like the Ford Taurus, and stylish like my first car, a 1976 Monte Carlo! One of the very few newer cars that are still attractive is my 2015 Camaro which is styled like a 1969 Camaro, a winner hands down! Just like the newer Impala, Malibu, Colorado, and Silverado! Also it is Cool Looking! GM still makes the best classic looking vehicles! Not ugly (fugly) stuff that look like bugs which originated in Asia like a Nissan! 🤘👍😎😍

First thing we did in ‘74 was disable that stupid seatbelt starter lockout system, more government mandated BS! I still had the remains of that thing in my ‘74 Nova when I bought it in the 80’s and you could see where the customer jumped it out when it was new. Dumb idea!

Hilarious - GM compares a G20 to an E150 instead of an E250 and when comparing engines they showed Ford's for a split second to make sure people didn't notice that 460 as an option. GM couldn't answer that until 1990. Also, GM wouldn't even acknowledge the Super Van Ford had with additional length - something else GM didn't have until 1990. Keep trying GM, Ford was/is the van king still.

Chrysler had the worst one of it never work from the factory and was just a piece of shit design.. sometimes you nephew disable that it would start buzzingfor no reason even after everything was perfectly fine out of the blue I wonder why I was only Chevy and Ford where was the beautiful Dodge tradesman van not allowed in the competition cuz they were getting customized and just badass all the way around..
