Produced by British Airways Film Unit, the 1976 TRANSATLANTIC SUPERSONIC is a promotional film for British Airways’ commercial transatlantic flights on the supersonic Concorde jet. The film follows several men and one woman as they depart various locations (Germany, Bahrain, Scotland, and Paris) to travel to the U.S. via Heathrow Airport. The use of British Airways’ supersonic Concorde jet allows these passengers to cross the Atlantic in just over 3.5 hours. The Concorde lands (02:25) in London at Heathrow International Airport, where it waits for passengers to board it before flying to the U.S. The passengers board the Concorde, Flight 579, and enjoy the “club-like” cabin as the jet (08:50) and the flight deck crew (09:21) prepare to depart. The Concorde takes off (09:50) from Heathrow and flies through the sky (10:37) while passengers enjoy the high-end cabin services (10:56). Twenty minutes out of London, the Concorde prepares to reach supersonic speed (12:30); the smooth transition is hardly noticed by the passengers as they Concorde climbs up to its cruising altitude of 57,000 feet (13:18). The jet reaches speeds twice the speed of sound (14:33), before decelerating as it prepares to land at Dulles International Airport (15:53). The Concorde lands (16:31) in just over 3.5 hours, having covered 3,780 miles. Mobile lounges greet the jet (17:05) and take the passengers to the terminal. The film concludes by briefly following the featured passengers on their way to their respective destinations while touting the possibilities created by halving the time it takes to fly across the Atlantic Ocean.
The Aérospatiale/BAC Concorde is a British-French turbojet-powered supersonic passenger jet airliner that was operated until 2003. It had a maximum speed over twice the speed of sound at Mach 2.04 (1,354 mph or 2,180 km/h at cruise altitude), with seating for 92 to 128 passengers. First flown in 1969, Concorde entered service in 1976 and continued flying for the next 27 years. It is one of only two supersonic transports to have been operated commercially; the other is the Soviet-built Tupolev Tu-144, which was operated for a much shorter period.
Concorde was jointly developed and manufactured by Sud Aviation (later Aérospatiale) and the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) under an Anglo-French treaty. Twenty aircraft were built, including six prototypes and development aircraft. Air France (AF) and British Airways (BA) were the only airlines to purchase and fly Concorde. The aircraft was used mainly by wealthy passengers who could afford to pay a high price in exchange for Concorde's speed and luxury service.

I do not care in the slightest if Concorde was a commercial failure, Concorde was a technical and engineering marvel and such an amazing and beautiful looking aircraft. It successfully proved that supersonic travel was indeed possible, even if it was costly. There will never be an aircraft like Concorde ever again, it truly was an aviation icon and a well loved aircraft.

Lots of memories here. While I never took the Concord, I did arrive in Dulles from Geneva back in 1975. What a change. Huge cars with Air conditioning! We never had that in Europe. Also, after 50 years, Dulles and the access highway are so Over built. Virginia is wall to wall businesses and houses now. To see what was is a treat. Yes, it was simpler back then. I am happy to have experienced air travel before we all became Sardines!

Got a flight on the concorde as a gift. They came to Houston and did a flight into the gulf and back, just long enough to go supersonic. Glad I got to see it up close before they shut it down. It was quite a bit after this film was made.

My Dad worked for the Bristol aeroplane company in the 1950’s he was involved with early supersonic development which eventually led to Concorde. I remember hearing and seeing it flying high over the South Wales coast en route to the US…….impressive aircraft!

@@pb6198 Yes they are. In the 1970s & 1980s, you'd average at least one major air crash in a month. Today they're so few and far in between, that when a major crash does occur, it became a worldwide scandal.

because that was a fluke, a pr move like "moon base by 1995"... passenger supersonic flight proved to be unaffordable and not in demand, when concorde was grounded it was like "oh, finally"... and exactly the same it was for soviets with TU-144 - everyone was glad to get rid of those pr-aircraft by dumping the remnants of both fleets to museums... M0.78-M0.82 at FL350 proved to be the most efficient flight mode for atmosphere of Earth

We will always have subsonic airliners, but now we are hopefully marching to an era where orbital and suborbital flights would be available thanks to the passenger SSTOs like SpaceX plan to do

We used to watch the Concorde take off from JFK and listen for the boom! They once came to a military base in NY and offered rides. I couldn't talk my parents into a flight, but I did get to go onboard and see the interior. Years later, my sister got to fly NY to London on the Concorde. It was terribly sad to see this beautiful bird go!

Perhaps the most spectacular part was casually strutting into the terminal, quickly and easily buying your ticket and checking in thanks to very pleasant and courteous staff, then walking straight to your gate. Even your friends and/or family could walk with you to your gate to see you off or meet you there upon your arrival. No ridiculous security checks and long queues to deal with including ridiculous restrictions on what you could carry on board. No one demanding that you take off your belt and shoes. WOW different world back then. My how the world has regressed.

Yeah, it was a different world back then - between 1968 and 1972 there were 130 hijackings of American airliners.There were terrorist bombings such as Pan Am 103 and of course the 9/11 attacks. When is the last time you heard of an airliner being hijacked? Do you really think the world has regressed when we have managed to make flying safer than ever?

I always found the "Smoking" and "Non-Smoking" areas in airplanes kind of interesting. In most domestic flights, your seating either had ashtrays or didn't have ashtrays; we all breathed the same air... :-)

5:43 Instead of taking a tristar flight from Paris - London to take BA Concorde from London - Washington, Marie La Claire should've taken the Air France Concorde from Paris to Washington and save herself the hustle. Ah, those fashion girls...

Quite a lot of French people flew British Airways Concordes. In part because BA offered a more luxurious service and also they flew more frequently than Air France Concordes. (at that time British Airways had 5 Concordes, Air France only had 4 - ultimately BA would have 7 and AF 6)

Fabulous nostalgia blast, air pressure headsets, no tv screens and a bunch of galley equipment uncovered as the passengers were boarding, and to operate Concorde to any other destination than JFK became commercial suicide shortly after this.

Did anyone notice a connection to New York via Washington, this film was from before the Concorde flew to JFK. Taking the 747 might not be quicker than the Concorde to Washington and a shuttle to LGA but its not much slower. Amusing film.

It just goes to show that the future does not always bring advances. here now in 2023 we are way behind our capacity for high speed passenger flights which was available in the 160's till the early 2000's

I once bought a very cheap Air France flight from San Francisco to Hamburg via Paris. They messed it up and I took a United Red Eye to New York. Got on the Concord and made my Connection into Hamburg. Quite a Ride.

You can see why it was vital BA and Air France got clearance to operate into JFK to make Concorde pay. Washington at least gave it a transatlantic route but all those limousine transfers to the national airport didn’t really seem that efficient or cost effective!

Free limo service was offered at JFK too. Flew in on AF Concorde and connected with Continental from EWR. Was met at the gate and escorted all the way to curbside to the limo. Well, a rather old Town Car with a fat bloke lacking in grooming and playing some Arabic music all the way at annoyingly loud level.

Supersonic and atomic its the only way to go the faster you go in air the safer you are since you are putting yourself in the air less of time and airspace isnt really crowded well it is but you are all far apart imagine going on the freeway and seeing about 2 cars pass the opposite lane thats why its safer less congestion so unlike car travel where its safer to travel slower for a better reaction time its opposite in air you have to haul ass Mach 10 baby

@@Gg1118dieo My reply to the other poster was in regards to the imaginary prospect of spending 12 hours in flight instead of 24. But in any case, Concorde's primary market was transatlantic, not Pacific - so there was no comparison in range performance with the 747.

Those times are ludicrous--ad films say anything. The film is also wildly confusing with all the time quotes. A friend did NY to London in about 1984--$5000 one way. She said it was loud, cramped and Jerry Hall was on board (Jagger''s girlfriend). People hated the noise over their houses and it was really pretty ill conceived and elitist. We have to make planes that pollute less.

D Stuart - You forget that this project was started in a different time - the early 1960s - when high technology such as this was seen as progressive and forward looking, so it was NOT ill conceived - nothing of the sort. Yes, it probably was noisy onboard - but did you ever fly on any of the early model 727 or 737s ? or any other 60s era jets? Cabin noise was something you put up with. Jerry Hall? First Class has always been full of rich idiots being obnoxious on any aircraft. And there will always be "'Elitist" things for the rich - that will never change. And as for people hating Concorde flying over their houses - well most people living near any airports usually hate ALL aircraft flying over! I worked at London Heathrow for 31 years, and lived beside the field, so I know what I speak of. The world that Concorde was born into was not the world it ended up operating in, but thats the way life goes. Yes, modern aircraft engines pollute far less than the models that were made in 1960, and that should have been obvious before you wrote your comment. Times change, and technological improvements are based on previous experience, and there are too many people these days who think it's ok to denigrate past achievements when they know nothing of the times. Therefore, I think Your comments are pretty "Ill conceived", and maybe a little prior thought would've been appropriate.
