Join Rita Otu, founder of Smart Seasters-an organization built-in support of Nigerian fisherwomen-as she uncovers the story of forgotten mollusks called periwinkles.
Smart Seasters works with local communities in the Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria to inspire young women to become ‘sea champions.’ With a leg up from Sea Seasters, women from the community pursue careers in ocean-based fields such as fishing, conservation, and sustainability and connect with local decision-makers to influence seafood sector decisions. Smart Seasters works primarily with women in the periwinkle value chain, which involves many women workers and where women can feel empowered and safe in their jobs.
Periwinkles are a type of shore snail found on the mudflats and rocks of coastal estuaries. They are bountiful and easy to harvest and are considered a national delicacy. Periwinkles are so prized in specific communities that they are featured in ceremonial dishes served at events such as weddings, burials, festivals, and naming ceremonies. Popular among the Ibibios and Efik peoples of Southern Nigeria is a dish called Afang Soup. Read on to find Rita’s recipe, complete with notes on the preparation of this delicacy, and consider giving the humble yet powerful periwinkle a place at your table.
