David Holmgren recounts how a chance meeting with Bill Mollison sprouted the idea that became Permaculture.
This short film is part of a bigger film Permaculture The Documentary, produced by Dogs Go Woof Productions.
This is a first reveal of the footage that has been shot with David during three days spent at Melliodora. The next chapter is to shoot Bill's story in Tasmania, where Permaculture began and discover how this simple idea evolved into the most sustainable design system that reconnects human culture with nature in an evolving world.

gives me goosebumps whenever I watch this...the Creator has a perfect plan and wants humans to follow that plan...permaculture is the human conveyance of that plan and it is beautiful...thank you so much for sharing your mind with the world. I have a nascent 4 acre permaculture food forest I started developing in March 2019 in SE Kansas and for me it is heaven on Earth

Like you often find with a great mentor, the student becomes more than the mentor. I know this is a 'long bow'. The meeting of 2 great intellects. How lucky are we. A remarkable meeting of two minds that grew off each other. I will have a go and say that I think that David was the more technical of the two. Anyway, and not surprisingly, Permaculture is still one ethos but like any good tree it has a huge amount of diverse branches.

I agree, it’s a great ecosystem to take inspiration from, but although it is super complex, that is a tropical climate and only found at the equator, so there are limits to what can be achieved from modelling off that particular ecosystem in somewhere say arid or in the Mediterranean for example, where more emphasis on water conservation and storing is necessary. But it sure is nature at her finest! 🌿

I'm not sure i follow: trappers didnt trap the rabbits cause they had no incentive to, but they farmed them?

The rabbit trappers didn’t have an incentive to stop the rabbits, because they were being paid to catch them. So, they started farming them so they could catch more rabbits.

It LOOKS diverse, yea. But that is where the advantages end. You can do it as a vet gardener at old age in your back yard for happiness, sure. But to support the whole family if I work non agriculture related field ? And all of us - billions of people? To me it looks like let us build our own small power plants instead of having one centralized. Ok, it is doable, but at what cost? Go and learn what EFFICIENCY means!

Thanks for taking time to comment. The thing that I think gets lost and that is in part because this is only the backstory and not the full film, but permaculture is about replicating nature’s systems not gardening. There is nothing else that exists that is as efficient as nature’s systems. Unfortunately, all centralised systems require energy input from external resources which means they require loads more energy to function. And, if energy that is not exchanged within a closed loop system will always require more energy and resources while also producing waste, which if not used, is finite and unsustainable. So it makes sense to harness the most sustainable system we know, nature. And that starts with learning about the land and looking after it - which if you look at energy for us to survive, that starts with food production.

@@DogsGoWoofProductions I honor your opinion and I don’t want to force anyone to accept my opinion on this topic. Buy let me explain it a bit closer. There is an endless amount of different movements in this world we are living and therefore it would take forever to dive into them and argue. It is not necessary, because it is only important to be aware of the main and absolute goal people are existing and living: they are living for their Creator God who has created them to believe in Him, do His purposeful works and inherit eternal life to be with Him for eternity. One part of those God’s works we are to do, is our daily job for our bread (including gardening/agriculture): *Gen 1: 3 17-19 (NASB): “[..] In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life. 18Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field; 19By the sweat of your face You will eat bread,[..]” So we are to work hard for our bread and it is not designed for us not to work so that nature provides for us without our labour. There is a term “Entropy” in physics which basically means the amount of a mess or disorder. According to the 2nd law of thermodynamics - in any isolated system entropy tends to increase and never decrease. Every process, without the external input, tends to become more chaotic: temperature of the water in a thermos goes down if not heated, your room tends to become more dirty if not tidied up and so on. So without the labour (also gardening/agriculture) of the people, everything only tends to be more messy and chaotic in this world. One more important thing - everything in this world is created FOR people not vice versa. *Psalm 8: 5-8 (NASB): “5Yet You have made him a little lower than God, And You crown him with glory and majesty! 6You make him to rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, 7All sheep and oxen, And also the beasts of the field, 8The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea, Whatever passes through the paths of the seas.” And *Heb 2: 8 (NASB): “You have put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in subjecting all things to him, He left nothing that is not subject to him.“ So nature is created by God for people, not people for nature and created not in the way that it provides bread for itself, without us working. Without work all that remains is just a jungle that will not provide bread for people. Talking about centralization here - it is a way to increase efficiency, even if it also has some downside. It is better through division of labor to have an 8 hour working day as we have today and have spare time for our families and other good works than work from light to light on our own just for the daily bread. Finally, It is because of the evilness of people why the power tends to concentrate in the hands of less and less people who are getting richer while the majority lives in poverty even while working hard. Those people will answer for their evil works and choices on the day of God’s judgement.

Interesting. I appreciate the some of points you raised in the conversation and I although I disagree with some of these things, I think one of the most important things you raised was about how the poor people suffer in these centralised economies and from my experience growing your own food at home for just taking an hour a week away from other work, I was able to grow all my veggies - that freedom and fulfilment is priceless and the best thing about it is, anyone can do it. The sun shines, water rains and plants will grow, without having to ask for permission from those higher people, and that to me is the most empowering and positive work I’ve done that has given back in so many ways. But, it has been interesting and I value your thoughts, so thanks for the discussion and I wish you all the best. 🌱

You didn’t really discovered permaculture. Seems like you’re trying to get credit for something that existed before for hundreds of years in some regions before modern agriculture came about.

pmilko1 that is true in a sense that permaculture is not a new concept of connection to nature and although it’s not said in this video, there is another chapter part of the film, which acknowledges that those concepts came from indigenous culture - but what permaculture offers is the ability to design nature back into modern life and across cultures

Demeter is much older and Steiner did not invent it too. I would call Francé and his wife Francé-Harrar the inventors of symbiotic organic agriculture, cause they where science based the first time. Never heard somebody dropp the names. Nature invented everything, we can just copy. Or study how nature does it.
