Welcome to my knitting world of million techniques you can use to make better knits!
This video shows you how to create permanent fold in ribbing. Part 2 of this video addresses the purpose of the permanent fold in knitwear, how to finish it, and what happens next.
Where would you use a permanent fold in ribbing? Mostly in trims at the neckline, sleeves, mittens and gloves, and socks.
I tried many versions of it and here is how it works:
- it is amazing when used in 1x1, 2x2, 3x3, and possibly 4x4 rib. Simple knit and purl. I have not tried it with any other decorative ribbing.
- use a minimum of 3 rows and a maximum of 5 or 6. Why? It's a double fabric material with some "missing" stitches ( the ones that you slip) so the fold itself is not as hefty. It is thinned-out material. If it makes any sense.
If you work it in the round repeat this round anywhere from 3 to 6 times:
knit all the knit stitches in the ribbing, and slip all the purl stitches in the ribbing purlwise with the yarn in front.
If you work flat repeat the next two rows as many times as you see fit - I suggest 2 minimum ( you don't have to repeat them in tandem, if you want/need an odd number of rows):
Row 1: knit all the knit stitches in the ribbing, and slip all the purl stitches in the ribbing purlwise with the yarn in front.
Row 2: purl all the purl stitches of the rib, and slip all the knit stitches purlwise with the yarn at the back of the work.
Please let me know if you know this technique, if you used it, if you like it or if you don't like it.
THANK YOU FOR WATCHING!

I am adding a folded in collar in a vee neck sweater for my husband. Will this work with a vee neck? I think it will add structure to force a nice fold where I want it.

Yea it would but be careful at the very v. Maybe do two rows of the slip stitch. I started using the same technique but after the fold, does it make sense. Its in part 2 of the permanent fold video. At the very end.

Good question!!!! So the purpose is to have a permanent fold in folded over sock trim, or a hat brim. So it always stays in that shape. With that specific brim/trim depth. And you dont have to constantly fiddle with it. Again, if that is your preference. I use it in neckline trims. Why? The fold itself will be slightly narrower than the base of the trim. It creates structure and makes the trim spread out flat at the neck. I hope that is clear. I will address it and create a show and tell on my next weekly podcast. Not every neckline trim will benefit from this. Only the ones that seem like they are too wide and flappy. Like when sometimes you need/want to run an elastic thread thru the fold of the neckline trim. If its the case like that I would use a permanent fold to give it structure. For mittens, if you dont like the scrunched material at the wrist and you want the trim at the wrist to be neatly and evenly folded you just add the permanent fold.

The beauty of it is you dont finish it. That is it. Let me address it on Thursday in more detail on my podcast. And show examples of what happens next. And why and how. Thank you for asking. It makes me think to address these techniques I introduce in more detail.
