The beauty of lost media is that not all media is completely lost and still has a chance of reocovery, but some media, for one reason or another, is irretrievably lost, and will never be seen by the public again. Here is a list of just some media that may very well be lost forever.

I bought a DVD copy of the Blues Brothers from a charity shop for 50p a year ago after refusing to buy a copy unless it was the extended edition but no information on sites such as Amazon and Ebay never included on the listing whether it was or not.. the following night i gave in and thought I’d put my newly acquired copy on and low and behold it was the extended cut but the box has the original version runtime listed on the back

_Dr. Strangelove_ (January, 1964) is actually a parody of the best-selling serious novel _Red Alert_ (1958) . It beat the dramatization _Failsafe_ (October 1964), based on the serialized thriller novel _Failsafe_ (1962), to the box office by several months. This was due to a lawsuit filed by Kubrick that alleged that the similar _Failsafe_ plagiarized its plot from _Red Alert_ . _Failsafe_ suffered at the box office, perhaps due to the recent memory of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the looming threat of nuclear war, and is mostly forgotten.

I'm well inclined to believe that Kubrick cut that scene for being to cheerful looking. While I personally think the ider of the fight as it is described actually does fit the tone of the just sheer insanity of it all, I can also see why he believed a serious tone would have been better.

Two other ones that almost certainly won't ever be seen, and for understandable reasons: There's a never aired episode of the Dick Cavett talk show which featured fitness enthusiast and publisher James Rodale and columnist Pete Hamill as guests. Rodale passed away from an apparent heart attack during the taping after he reportedly boasted that he'd live to be 100 as long as he didn't get hit by an ice cream truck. Another is the tragic final morning show broadcast of Sarasota, Florida TV personality Chris Chubbuck in 1974. I first found out about the Chubbuck incident in the intro to a story anthology by Harlan Ellison; it inspired a plot point in the great 1976 film "Network", and a biopic was made about her a few years ago.

This isn't on the same level as the instances here, but the Blues Brothers reminded me of some other lost Belushi footage. In the 1970s NBC aired Godzilla vs Megalon during primetime. (Why? who knows?) It was introduced by Belushi in a Godzilla costume, and intercut with clips of Belushi making jokes or doing slapstick in the costume. Not as interesting to the general public today but any kid like me who saw it when it aired would love to see it again.

Very informative! Regarding Dr. Strangelove. While I'd love to see the footage of the pie fight, I think it would be excessive and redundant, as the ending portrayed the MAD-ness of it all without needing any more slapstick. The JFK assassination did, however, move Kubrick to make a change in the post-production. If you watch closely you can easily see that Major Kong says "A fella could have a nice time in Dallas...", while you hear Slim Pickens say "Vegas". Truly a "too soon" moment for Kubrick.

Great stuff. One miniscule quibble aside, this is excellent, a wonderful video. BTW, some outtakes from Strangelove were used in Magical Mystery Tour - this is Second Unit footage of flying shots over Greenland which are used for the 'Flying' sequence, albeit colourized (in single colours). I think you need to do Volume 3 - which is the biggest compliment I could give you.

@@jasonsmith-bm1sv No, that's not true. The outtakes were from Strangelove. It's the Missile sequence backgrounds from Strangelove which were filmed in Greenland by a Second Unit and this spawned outtakes and these are used for MMT. They are in part of the Flying sequence for MMT. This was confirmed in a radio interview with Editor Roy Benson in 2013 on BBC Radio 4 in the documentary Celluloid Beatles. A quick comparison with both films' relative sequences will confirm this too. In addition, 2001 had not wrapped all its' photography in September 1967 and was actually released after MMT in April 1968. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magical_Mystery_Tour_(film)#Editing

You learn something new every day, I had no idea there was a Roadshow release of The Blues Brothers. I know of the extended version (hell it's the version I've seen and own physically) but not the Roadshow version. Usually Roadshow prints of movies are never screened beyond their theatrical release as a general rule and many of them are now lost to my knowledge (the most recent Roadshow screening I can recall is The Hateful Eight in 2015). I've heard it rumoured that it was written in Stanley Kubrick's will that all cut footage from his films get destroyed (with the only exception being Spartacus since Kubrick was a hired director and later disowned it). Not only is Dr Strangelove's pie fight ending gone but so are the cut scenes from A Clockwork Orange and the hospital ending of The Shining (which was only shown on its first day of limited release), there was a rumour that the BFI screened a print of Dr Strangelove with the pie fight ending after Kubrick's death but this is unconfirmed, likewise the whereabouts of the footage is unconfirmed. Actually 17 minutes were cut out of 2001: A Space Odyssey before it went on general release as well (it had a Roadshow screening), however in 2010 a copy of the footage turned up in a salt mine in Kansas of all places, however out of respect for Kubrick's family this footage has never been released to the public. I wish the full version of Freaks still exists because the final cut did suffer a little due to the ending and the obvious amount of missing footage (even the final cut's ending came from a poor quality print). Actually I struggle to view Freaks as a horror movie because it really isn't, aside the marketing and it's ending (which could even be read as justified self defence) it's actually ahead of its time when it comes to disability representation (I mean it) and I think it’s still important and relevant today, while the world is a more progressive place these days I still think a contemporary audience wouldn't be ready for a film like it.

_Freaks_ (1932) is the source of The Simpsons running gag "One of US! One of US!". This is what the sideshow performers chanted after they turn Cleopatra into one of them. This was also used in the _Clerks_ animated series (episode 6: _The Last Episode Ever_ ; February, 2001). A fair is set up across the street from the Quickie Mart. Two sideshow performers based on Schlitze the Pinhead from _Freaks_ come in to the Quickie Mart to buy stuff. Dante and Randal feel pity for them, but agree that at least they're not conscious enough to understand how awful their life is. This sentiment is then shared by the performers, who are glad that the Quickie Mart employees aren't aware of how awful their life is.

Sorry to have to correct you sir, but the scene in question where Lee catches a live round was after he comes back and goes after Massi aka Fun Boy in the apartment with Darla, Sara's mom. The eeriest/saddest part of Lee's death, personally speaking, and besides the fact that his father passed prematurely as well; is the tragic nspiration for the story of The Crow, that being ofcourse O'Barr's personal loss. Bless the Cure for helping get him through it all. 🖤

I remember that scene where the General and Soviet Ambassador fought with the apparently internally contradictory line by the President, "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here, this is the war room." The decision to not have the pie fight was appropriate for the reason given. Or maybe there was a fear THE THREE STOOGES might sue claiming the pie fight was their trademark. It would have still been fun to watch. It would be best to run it as a separate short followed by the THREE STOOGES looking and Moe scowling, "Amateurs."

One piece of permanently lost media that I'm personally upset about is Eurovision 1964. The only surviving footage consists of the very beginning and the Italian winner, Gigliola Cinquetti, reprising her song after winning. It was rumored for a long time that the footage was lost due to a fire, which is even still mentioned on the official Eurovision website, but we've since learned that it's not true. The host broadcaster, DR, is mainly at fault, as they never actually recorded the contest that year, but no other country's broadcaster recorded it either. I do especially blame DR though, since they didn't record for 9 years straight, and the time that they hosted fell into those years. It's especially a shame that the footage was lost, as it was a very historical year in several ways. The first contest, from 1956, also has very little surviving footage due to not being recorded. However, I don't put as much blame onto anyone, as it was mainly meant to be a radio broadcast, and the broadcasters likely didn't think that the contest would become as popular as it did, or as historical as it is.
