History of Spain 1: Prehistory and Antiquity - Tartessos, Iberians, Celts y the Romanization
EPISODE 79 of BUT THAT IS ANOTHER HISTORY (web documentary series)
Before entering the Middle Ages, let us take a brief look at prehistory and antiquity in the Iberian Peninsula. Our first stop is Atapuerca, meeting place of several hominids that preceded the first cultures, such as the Millares or the Argar.
It is believed that the first kingdom of the peninsula was Tartessos, while the rest of what is now Spain was dotted by different tribes of Celts, Iberians and Basques. The story changes when the Phoenicians and Greeks arrive first, and Carthaginians and Romans afterwards.
Hispania became a battlefield during two Punic wars and two Roman civil wars, until finally Rome achieved its goal and conquered it completely after the Cantabrian Wars. The romanization of Hispania would take several centuries, until the invasion of the Visigoths in the fifth century AD.
