Hi all. A good many years ago I came across a book by a chap called Yusef Lateef. It was full of interesting and exotic (well to my ears) sounding scales and patterns. Here are two that struck me as a bit cool. The Persian and Egyptian scales as he named them. I like to use them sometimes in jazz improvisation and also in composition.

Your Persian scale is the same as Raga Bhairav in Indian (Hindustani) classical music, note that traditional Persian and Arabic music both use quarter tones to define scales and modes in addition to full and half-steps. FTR, Hindustani music uses 12 notes to define a raga (melodic progression framework) and 10 additional pitches in between for ornamentation purposes.

Is it? Thanks…I know next to nothing about using quarter tones etc. It’s not my Persian scale lol …I got it from Yusef Lateef’s book ‘Repository of Scales and Melodic Patterns’. I’ve always assumed he made compromises with some of the scales to fit western harmony and instrumentation. Cheers!

So to recap: Persion is same as Phrygian Dominant but with a natural 7th Egyptian is same as Harmonic Minor but with sharp 4th Hijaz Maqam is exactly Phrygian Dominant For reference the Phrygian Dominant is the 5th mode in the Harmonic Minor scale

@@supersteveworld i asked this from my uni lecturer who is iranian. he said both are used. The iranian modes dont fall into the definitions of the western "mode". it has its own musical system close to modes called "dastghah". there are 6 or 7 of them. basically the dominant Phrygian mode (third is major) and the double harmonics are called "shoor" and "homayoon" ( i dont remember which is which i got an oral explanation from him and didint write it down.

Hi, I presume you are talking about the Persian scale? Not quite the same. Persian has a natural 7th degree (in relation to major scale) and Dominant Phrygian has a flattened 7th. Cheers 👍

First of all, I want to say thank you for sharing such awesome scales BUT........ Sorry to be that guy LOL "That F&*#ing guy" (teeth grinding) but the scale you are calling Persian is really called byzantine, or double harmonic in western or in the east they call it hujaz kar. a propper Persian scale has a flat 5. but don't take my word for it (look it up) and Egyptian? I've heard that one called Egyptian before but then I've heard everything from Spanish Phrygian to the diminished scale called "the Egyptian scale" LOL but anyways that scale is called Hungarian Minor, in western English, and Nawa athar in the east (sorry about my bad spelling of Semitic words)

Hi Jesse, thanks for stopping by and watching…no worries about pulling me up on these…my source was Yusef Lateef’s book ‘Repository of Scales and Melodic Patterns’…in which they are called Persian and Egyptian respectively. A lot of these ‘exotic’ scales (for want of a better word) are contentious and seem to get people a little hot and bothered about the true naming of them. It’s perfectly reasonable for Yusef to have got things wrong or mixed up and it’s also believable that Wikipedia might not be entirely accurate either (not that I saying you got your information from there…but a lot of people do). With this type of thing musical lines get blurred and one person’s Steven is another’s Esteban 😀. I couldn’t care less to be honest lol. They sound cool and are fun to use in my composing and improvisation, which is why I made the video…to share what I had discovered. Good luck with your music, all the best 👍

The Persian scale is 1,b2,3,4,b5,b6,7. You need to flatten that perfect 5th.

Damien Scanlon Hi Damien, thanks for having a look at the video, that’s great. I got my information from a book by Yusef Lateef called ‘Repository of Scales and Melodic Patterns’. It’s a pretty comprehensive and authoritative text and I highly recommend it, if you can find a copy.
@myyootube2
@myyootube2 3 жыл бұрын
@@supersteveworld I've also heard what Damien is saying. It would appear that westerners at least at times refer to both versions as the "Persian scale", although Dbl Harmonic Major is probably more common for the perfect 5th version. But here's a little secret. The Persian with the flatted 5th is a mode of your "Egyptian" scale. It's the 5th mode. So no sweat. It's covered!
