Persian Poem: No.40 Hafez Shirazi
Thanks be to God that the wine-shop's door is open,
Considering that I have a longing face turned towards it.
The jars are all bubbling and clamorous with drunkenness
And this wine that's there is real, not metaphorical.
On its part, all intoxication and overweeningness and pride;
And on ours, all hopelessness, helplessness and need.
The secret we have told no other nor will tell,
Let us tell the friend, because he's the one secrets are told.
The description of the curls in the tress, curve within curve, of
the beloved,
Cannot be made short, because this affair's a long one.
The burden of Majnún's heart and the curl of Layla's- tress,
Is the cheek of Mahmúd and the sole of the foot of Ayáz.
Like the hawk I have hooded my eves from all the world.
So much is my eye open to your beautiful cheek.
Everyone who enters the Ka'ba of your street,
Through the qibla of your eyebrow is rightly directed in prayer.
O comrades of the assembly, the burning heart of humble Háfiz
Inquire of the candle that's engrossed in burning and melting!
