Person-Centered vs System-Centered - Beth Mount

In this film Beth Mount explains how Person-Centered work differs from System-Centered.
System-centered planning comes from the idea that the people we support are defined and treated through the idea of what the system needs in order to run efficiently. The system believes it is their job to "fix" people so they define and create a treatment plan and hope to get it correct before even meeting the people who they support and for who these systems are put in place for.
A major contrast to that is person-centered planning. People don't belong to systems; they belong to themselves, their families, and their communities. If we can see them in a different light, in the capacities that they can bring to a community, then our thinking shifts dramatically from how to fit people into a system to how do we support people to live good lives in communities. Furthermore how do we take things we need from systems and services and use them in a more responsive way.

Services are wired towards their own self interest, thank you for finally saying it out loud

Informative we should always think about a person’s needs and treat them as individuals.

The way this is worded makes it very difficult to understand what is being said. Having studied health and social care and psychology i already know what its trying to get at but attempting to make notes from this video is very frustrating

It’s in my level 2 course 😬 - I think I get it . Basically saying we can’t just expect services to work for everyone and we needs to look at the whole person and their needs so they can be living and working but supported by services.

We need to make everyone feel like they belong, the best way is to help them get to where they need to be by giving them help and being a FREIND.

Thank you for sharing this video here on KZfaq where captions are available. I engaged the captions and found them to be inaccurate in places, as automatic captions frequently are. I would like to share this widely with friends and colleagues who have auditory processing or hearing difficulties and who rely on accurate captions for access to information on videos. Can you correct the captions? (a few examples: "from the origin love person-centered planning", "capacities that they brain", "contribute NBC the Suns". Thanks. Judy Bailey
