I have seen people doing this at my local station... Not only does it have a blind curve at each end of the platform and through trains are common, but it has a live third rail! Recently a young lad was killed by the third rail one station down, whilst messing around on the tracks. His friends and others are all trying to blame Network Rail because they "didn't know about the electrocution risk" - despite being FULLY aware that you shouldn't be on the tracks! It's a very sad loss, but you can't help people who won't listen or think they know better.

@alanmusicman33852 жыл бұрын
I imagine that they are acting dumb on the advice of ambulance chasing lawyers - no-win no fee - so no risk to the grieving parents. If they live close enough to an electrified railway for their kid to have been behaving brainlessly on it, then its pretty unlikely to succeed. To agree to try for some compensation money on the back of such an incident smells rancid anyway - though of course we don't know all the facts. Could be the kid was visiting from an area where there are no electrified lines.
@underwaterdick2 жыл бұрын
@@alanmusicman3385 no, the teenagers involved were all local. No doubt they had been on the tracks plenty of times before. When I saw teenagers doing this at my local station they laughed at me when I tried to warn them how stupid it was. I couldn't stand back and not tell them, but it makes you think, has anybody actually ever told them the track is electrified? There was a 16 year old girl who crossed the tracks at a large station just down the line from me "because it was quicker" than using either the footbridge or underpass. She was electrocuted in front of her friends, lots of waiting passengers and several members of railway staff. Her heart stopped numerous times at the scene and on the way to hospital. She was disfigured and disabled by the incident.... She now campaigns for education about electrified tracks because she too, "didn't know" crossing the tracks could kill her. Despite the signs in every station warning of electrocution, passing trains and that trespassers will be fined £2,000. At least she is doing something good with her time now, trying to educate. Sadly, the incident traumatised staff who went to the aid of a girl they thought was most likely dead and realised she wasn't.

As it’s an unscheduled stop he would have to report it I suppose, perhaps a driver can tell us
@Simonize412 жыл бұрын
He’d report it to the signaller first (I am one) and then his control if he felt it necessary (he can inform his control at destination or relieving point if the issue wasn’t severe, to minimise delay). My next role is to stop any other train in the area to then enable a caution of those trains; unless it is proven the trespasser has clearly and fully left the railway. I also attend to the driver ensuring they are okay and able to continue forward or possibly not. I would then speak to my Ops controller informing him of the incident and the actions taken. Said controller may despatch a MOM (Mobile Operations Manager) and/or the BTP and they would speak to the relevant TOCs control. This happens regularly I’m afraid, even more so with young kids these days, I’ve dealt with some fatalities and very near misses in the past. Always a trying, upsetting and anxious time.

Drivers should consider the safety of the passengers on the train first and not attempt an emergency stop. Stick with the designated speed. The safety of anyone trespassing on the tracks is not the driver's problem and they should not feel any guilt for hitting anyone. Controversial - maybe!, Callous - maybe! But it's the safety of the train passengers and crew that matters. An emergency stop could result in unneccessary and avoidable injuries to passengers and crew.

You say that "The safety of anyone trespassing on the tracks is not the driver's problem and they should not feel any guilt for hitting anyone" but I don't think you completely understand, something like that would completely change your life if you were the driver, you cant do anything but sit there and watch it happen. I don't think the driver would even have time to think of the passengers when they are in control of a train which they know cant stop in time. Its not like its something you can prepare for in any way, it just happens and before you know its already too late.

That guy now has to live with the fact that he could have derailed the train, he's ruined the lives of people on the train and he would rather put his life at risk then simply cross the footbridge Disgrace 😡

I don't think hitting a person is going to be heavy enough to derail a train. Even something like a car would be enough to derail a 125mph train, for example the 2004 Ufton Nervet rail crash.
