This is an incredibly solid retrospective on the one which started it all; Which while clunky and archaic, still has some really neat features, which would go on to become main points of the series. I can't wait to see a retrospective on the P2 duology which I think is underrated, and a surprisingly good JRPG for it's time. Your editing has gotten much better, and I can feel a real sense of joy and dedication you had while working on it. Same goes for the writing, points flowed well into one another, and resulted in a piece which was easy to understand, and fun with quips here and there. This feels like the logical next step in your style, and I can't wait to see what you do next and further improvements. Keep up the great work, and have a nice day.

Persona 1's strongest soldier

Fun facts about persona 1! 1. Takeda got his persona from Philemon because of his strong desire to sing. 2. Takeda’s persona is the only persona in the series where we can see the persona, but we have literally no idea who or what it’s supposed to be. However, if you count non-canon content, the same can be said for a character in Trinity Soul. 3. Kenta/Toro/the fat kid’s persona is apparently supposed to be Mara. Yes, THAT Mara. Well, i think it is. The MegaTen wiki seems indecisive on the matter. It refers to the persona as Akuma, and i swear clicking that link used to lead you to Mara, but now it just leads to the page for the Akuma race. On Mara’s page, Kenta is listed as his persona user and his image is shown in the gallery. So, i guess Mara has been in Persona ever since the first game? 4. Speaking of Kenta’s persona, according to Baofu in Eternal Punishment, it doesn’t specialize in combat. This has lead to me headcanoning that Kenta’s Mara is a navigator persona, and we just don’t know it because navigators were only introduced in P3. 5. Reiji is one of two non-protagonist, non-velvet characters whose arcana changes. His initial persona, Bres, is of the Devil arcana, while his ultimate persona Mot is of the Death arcana. The other character is Adachi, who changes from Jester to Hunger. 6. The aforementioned technically also applies to Kei. Kei’s initial persona, Aizen Myouou, is a Hierophant persona, while his ultimate persona Yamaoka is Judgement. However, this was changed in Eternal Punishment, where Yamaoka is also a Hierophant. 7. Speaking of Yamaoka, he is the first and so far only character that became a persona after his death. 8. Also on the topic of changes made in Eternal Punishment, Eriko is the only character in the series whose personas changes between games. She has Nike and Micheal in Persona 1, but in Eternal Punishment, her ultimate has been changed to Gabriel. 9. The rat tank boss Tesso is actually based on japanese mythology. Tesso is a yokai in the form of a giant rat with metal teeth that was formed from a monk dying on a hunger strike. 10. Tamaki, the female protagonist from Shin Megami Tensei if…, shows up in this game. She also references the events of that game, which means that SMT if is the canonical first game in the Persona universe. EDIT: BONUS FUN FACT 11!!! That satanic looking guy on the cover of Revelations: Persona is Vishnu. I have no idea why he looks like this, but that’s his design for this game.

One curious thing from the original version is that all the characters are portraitred in 2D, except for Philemon, who's the only one with a 3D model. Kinda makes you think about it 🤔

I did a live let's play of Revelations Persona with it being the second title I played in the series. Very strange but also really enjoyable and led to me streaming almost all of them. However, most important thing... Yukino is best girl

I recommend this game's manga. It's incredible! Not to say it gives the MC, Naoya Toudou, a backstory that has importance for the plot, Persona(4)-style, and merges the optional Snow Queen route with the main SEBEC one too, having its own arc at least. Not to talk that EVERY party member is around until the end. It's also good if you want to just enjoy the story without the infamous random encounter rate the game has. EDIT: Okay, didn't notice you talked about the manga at the end, I'm sorry. Though yes, you'd need to review it in another video.

"Personas are just representations of true self within a person" This definition isn't quite applicable in P1 and P2. Persona (in it's the original meaning and what P1 and P2 uses as bases) is some sort of "mask" you wear when you interact with society. Say, when you go to some official event. You will most likely try to stay polite, not say any dumb jokes and generally leave a good impression on other people. When you are with friends, you don't really care about what others think of you (they know you already, so it's not you doing something stupid will change their opinion of you). Same goes the other way. And in third case, let's say you rendering video for the 5th time and you are just angry and tired. You aren't quite tight and proper like in the official event but you also don't have energy to deal with stupid stuff. These are 3 versions of you. 3 masks or Personas, if you will. None you can self one true self on their own. That's main idea idea about Persona. And the reason why people have different affinities to different Arcana is quite simple. For someone carefree it will be hard if not impossible to wear mask of someone that calculates their every move and vice versa.

Great video and I look forward to you covering the rest of the series. I especially like how you named the songs you used onscreen and added funny commentary when you re-used "Child Abuse". I do want to comment on 48:00 - 50:38. I don't find what the party responded to Kumi with to be unreasonable. Yes, Kumi was being horribly pressured by both her classmates and parents but, the party weren't suggesting to take the hits. Kumi has others making sacrifices for her and rather than confront the complaints, she makes excuses and doesn't stand up for herself. Kumi's flashback shows how she isn't trying, she just mumbles short responses instead of showing how others have the wrong idea about her. She complains about others not understanding her but, does nothing to make them understand while also not understanding other people. They were upset at Kumi for not standing up for herself and going all "feel bad for me" while she's trapping people in the dream world. After being called out Kumi just has Hypnos give her validation for not defending herself. Yes her situation was bad, yes she's also a victim of the Snow Queen Mask but, if you're response to forcing your ideals on others is "feel bad for me", that does not garner sympathy, at least not from me.

It really can't be stated enough just how much I love this game, it's genuinely my favorite JRPG and I think the PS1 OST makes the atmosphere stunning. I'm glad you liked it and saw what can be so interesting about it. More than a blueprint, I consider this game (and the manga) to be, even in their oddities like Kumi, the series' ideal. Now I just wait for a remake, coming any second now....

Another thing about the negotiation system ... Simply making the demon eager will net you a spell card , but if you make the demon eager AND happy , he gives you another reward . Yes , it's an overly complicated system , but I enjoyed every chance I got to use it . Just like the battle system , I feel like it makes the game less spammy and more strategic

This was a good retrospective. I played through persona 1 psp ver. But never finished it because of the long stretch between the boss with no save spot and me being under leveled. My biggest problem with the game is the encounter rate😫. Which Is ultimately the only reason I wouldn't recommend the game to a newcomer in the persona series. I love sound track to psp version and whole I didn't see all of the characters, I could see they were a solid cast. I forgive most of the flaws for this game as you said this provided a solid foundation for future games.

Honestly I really love persona 1, it's janky both from a gameplay level and a coding mechanical level (this thing has 5 damage formulas and 2 are almost the exact same) but I loved it's story,cast and even the gameplay, I hope this review does inspire people to at least try the game although something I'd like to mention is that if you want to play with the PS1 OST there are 2 ways to get a smooth experience with it. 1. Play revelations on duckstation with the CPU overclock option this makes the game faster without speeding up the audio like other emulator speed ups. 2. Using the (still incomplete) music restoration patch that dropped recently, this is a much better version of the original psx music patch as this new one contains all the tracks with no PSP equivalent and the intro to deadline.

If you go to the school during the SEBEC route it's shrouded and darkness and there's no real explanation, I always assumed it was because the Snow Queen stuff was happening.. or at least, that was my headcanon, not sure if it makes sense or not. Honestly that quest shoulda just been an optional "expansion" to the main quest and then it continued on afterwards. Anyway, 100%, PLEASE review the manga.

10:20 I have a theory and opinion why the decision was made use the OG art as portraits. My theory is budget, which is most likely the case. My opinion is that PSP remakes at the time like Star Ocean FD had new more simplified art created and character portraits with new expressions, but most of the fans didn't like that style. When FD R came out in 2019, they had new portraits that closely resembled the fantasy style the series was known for. So it might of been the case of "why put in this extra work for a feature fans probably won't appreciate?" Can't confirm, but just came to my head during that tangent, lol

Fun fact, this game is technically mainline related, as IF… is listed as mainline and directly leads into this, devil summoner, and all modern day franchises but the SMT 1 and 2 universe which recreated into the one from nocturne, with IV being the only mainline game which interacts with the main story to actually be in an alternate universe, also another fun fact V is a sequel to nocturne larrue can eat me I have proof

Double comment but I really love the partner choosing, wish the whole p1 cast was up for grabs in eternal punishment, Reiji and Baofu would be an interesting pair, Reiji trying to talk him out of revenge because it’ll never really help anything and have baofu point out how that didn’t stop Chris, causing actual character conflict outside Katsuya and Baofu

oof profoundly disagree on the soundtracks, the rerelease is totally at odds with the tone of the game

I hope in the future they port persona 1 & 2 to the ps4 that way we all can have the persona experience from start to now. It's shame most have not experiance 1-4 , we are getting persona 3 & 4 in Jan . so all we need now is the last 3 to finish it .

How did this coincide with the Nintendo Direct!?

There are several aspects that I think P1 lacks and makes it a pretty uncohesive game and an overall pretty skippable experience. P1 was completely an experiment full of features no other Atlus game had before and it definitely had an identity (I can see why it sold pretty well) but I would say it’s completely outmatched by P2 which takes all the good aspects of P1 including its best characters. To make for a good experience capable of develivering the best things in P1 a remake should do too many changes on both story and structure. The two major ones I think about are. 1) A better opening sections of the game. it’s not that bad but it doesn’t give the player a motivation to go through the game and the protagonist is too bland, he doesn’t have a clear role at all. And it’s vital to give the protagonist that otherwise you’re just a spectator who goes on through pure curiosity for the game. (Which is enough just to hardcore fans otherwise you just drop the game) 2) More character development for the cast overall, I would say the only characters who get enough screen time and add something to the story are Mark (Which is almost a walking stereotype but fights with Nanjo and wants to help Maki and that’s enough) , Nanjo, Kandori and of course Maki. (Also Chisato had a good arc but she’s more a side character with a side story arc) The thing is we barely have enough to know them as characters and we don’t know anything about their relationship, their interactions at school and so on. I would say it’s difficult to call them a cast.
