We run up and find Adachi who congratulates us on a job well done getting here. Naoto lists his wrongs yet he still doesn't care. He has a rather skewed perception on life. It turns out the world reflects peoples thoughts.
He talks about his life and how he only became a cop for the sake of a gun. He made a mistake and got sent to here when he discovered his power.
Adachi says that in the world there are two people those that get talent and have a great life and those without have to put up with it...The only thing in life is despair for them... He wants to wipe away all these situations hopes and dreams are broken by reality. We are all put in boxes and labeled in the end. So if everyone is a shadow they will all be the same and oblivious to the outside.
If you cant change it ignore it and live how you think you should. They would all enjoy being shadows...
I guess sometimes I think that way at points...
Adachi changes into a shadow version and the comments the team make infuriate him which only make him change into a shadow. Looks like this is it!

While it is true that Adachi contradicts himself at several times, this is because he is pretty much the perfect example of a man escaping from the truth. Adachi is a brilliant thinker, and without a doubt one of the smartest, if not the smartest character introduced in the whole game. But at the same time, he is selfish, cynical, and prideful. He feels as though a "normal" life is less than he deserves, and blames everyone but himself for his frustration. A truly great villain if you ask me. ;)

Except he isn't, Adachi's misery is of his own making. Rather than live in his own moment and be optimistic, he lives (or rather lived considering he's locked up) a life of complacent complainer. Constantly bitching about how he was "dealt a bad hand" while never trying to make the best of his deck. These mindsets create self fufiled prophecies to those who believe in them, they believe they're stains to society so they become them. Sure Rise is privileged with "fame" in youth, but her entire story shows that it's an empty notoriety. People see her as "Rissette" not her true self, which led to her nearly falling to her own despair before the encounter with the investigation team. Point being, one's fate is within their own perspective. I will say tho, I love Adachi considering he's an amazing portrayal of many people in reality (and has become even more relevant today in the age of people who carry nihilistic mindset online), and it's faults.

Yeah, no. I’ll be the first to admit that life is hell, and you fight an uphill battle every day trying to make the most of your life. But talent is NOT at all what makes you good in life. You can be talentless as hell, but what carries you higher in life is a burning desire to not quit, to fight against the odds, and to be victorious. Adachi hid away from the truth this whole time and mired in his issues rather than taking the initiative to fix them. And regardless, there is absolutely no justification to “killing because it seemed fun”. You’ve got to be one broken asshole to think that’s any sort of justice, just because you’re “stuck eating cabbage uwu”. That’s not deep. That’s just nihilistic cringe. Adachi’s a cool character though. Really glad he learned his lesson in P4AU.

It is for the main characters to judge him, even though they didn't do anything to help him. What is more, they had their own outburst that could have killed people. But thats how life is, nobody is perfectly good, nobody is perfectly bad. People resort to hypocrisy because admiting to our own flaws can seriously break our minds. Okay my view on this is; simply put Adachi is an amazing character and has a lot of good points. I'm not going to say he is "Right" but I will equally deny that he is "wrong". Many of you may see his points as having flaws or being straight up stupid. But lets think for a second about Adachi and his shadow. Notice anything different from his shadow compared to any other seen in this game before or even after this scene? He doesn't "Turn" into a "True Self" or warp in any physical capacity. In fact we can clearly see that him and his shadow become one and the same, what does this mean? Well it's simple, Adachi in this scene or any other has not once lied to himself or others. What does this mean? Every point he makes, every single thing he says is true to his own beliefs and view. "Stupid Teenagers, you don't know what kind of shit I've been through!" It's probably a perfect way to summerise his entire life and experiences which have led him down this path. We know from the way that Adachi speaks on those with "Talent" that he has honestly tried in life , he tried to get ahead to make something of himself through the system but for all his effort he was never given an ounce or reward, remember how he says he made one tiny mistake and was shipped off to Inaba for it? Well due to the fact that he never once lies to himself we can confirm in truth that it must have been something incredibly minor yet he was given quite a severe punishment for it. I don't really care if you see him as wrong or childish the fact remains that he's lived a full life or work and facing the harsh reality that comes with adulthood compared to the main cast of teenagers who lets face it are still in a rather blissful life of highschool ignorance. He may have killed people under his own believes and done things many see as "wrong" but understand that there was clearly a time where he devoted himself to the "right" path of adulthood and being a member or society, but the world constantly pushed him down for those honest efforts and gave him cruel and unforgiving consequences for just trying to fit in. Perhaps driven by the "power" he's received and the crushing weight of adult reality he has gone somewhat mad and power hungry by his actions , but would anyone else under his personally believed extreme circumstances be any different? To him this "power" is his single reward for the things he's tried to accomplish in life in the midst of nothing but let down, so yes he would naturally exploit this gift to it's full. The world and many others clearly never cared for his efforts and existence over all, so I can only assume in his own mind, why should he care about others?
@MoreImbaThanYou
@MoreImbaThanYou 7 жыл бұрын
You summ it up perfectly. It's not about him being "right" or "wrong", it's about what makes sense from his perspective. And denying that such a perspective exists is exactly what he rages about, since that's exactly the carefree mindset that ignores the world around it he despises so much. Adachi truly is a great villain. I kinda hate how he gets his "redemption" in the Arena games. Having a nihilistic character that actually had some layers of depth greatly worked in the games favor.

Johan Laeon Well of course nobody is born evil. That doesn't excuse his actions. I don't care if he was true to himself he is still a shitty person. I am a adult and none of the adults that I know whine like Adachi. Ironically he is more childish than the protagonists despite being older than them. Adachi sounds like a whiny angsty teenager to me. Rather than try to improve himself, he wallows in self pity. Newsflash guys, the world owes us nothing and there are people who have it much worse than Adachi and many of those people don't wallow in self pity.

0816 M3RC You were doing so well until you said “I don’t care if he was true to himself he is still a shitty person.” Allow me to provide you an example of what it must feel like for Adachi. Imagine you and another person have been working at a company for years. You both have started working there around the same time and you do the exact same job. Unlike your coworker, who spends most of the time on their phone or slacking off, you work diligently to provide the very best quality work you could possibly perform with 110% effort. You never take a personal day, even if you’re sick, and usually cover the shifts of other coworkers when they’re gone. You don’t cause trouble, you never cut corners and you do everything the right way. You overhear talks of a promotion and how you are a potential candidate for it, so you make sure to work even harder. But in the end, the coworker that’s constantly slacking off gets the promotion instead. Now take that example and apply it to almost any situation you can think of when you were a kid such as when your brother got a toy and you didn’t or when you raise your hand to answer a question and the teacher calls on you, but some random kid shouts out the answer. Nobody likes failure, I think we can all agree on that. Some people handle it differently than others; agree on that too. But in Adachi’s case, it isn’t some ordinary constant cycle of failure, it’s literally surpassing your limits and working even harder than most people around you and still being unable to get ahead in life. It’s not possessing the talents to succeed so you’re forced to work twice, three, four times as hard to make up for it, but it’s still not enough for people to acknowledge you and reward you with some recognition from the world. No matter what you do, no matter how much you try, you will never be able to have what other people have and make it through life on something you’re good at because the world will always only care about those with talent. In all honesty, Adachi’s beliefs and perspective are practically identical to society in Danganronpa. There are two types of people in the world: those who were born with talent and everyone else. You don’t have a talent? You might as well be a poor person in a world ruled by the rich because you’d be lucky to even be treated the same as trash if you work hard enough. No matter how much a little dog tries, it’ll never become a big dog. No matter how much a penguin flaps its wings, it’ll never soar through the skies. And no matter how hard a person may work for the opportunity of reaching success, if they’re not born with their talent or into a rich family, they’re almost certainly doomed to fail. There is no “instead of improving himself, he chose to do this,” there is no improving because it would never be enough. That’s the reality of our society. “The world owes us nothing.” While that sentiment is true, that’s the honest equivalent of saying a criminal shouldn’t be allowed a defense. The court doesn’t owe anyone a defense, but it allows it so that criminals who have been wrongfully accused can have a chance at proving themselves to be innocent. So why can’t the world give us a chance to prove that we’re actually worth something instead of randomly cutting us down in favor of certain people? Newsflash: Equality of any kind is, by nature, a contradiction as there is NO SUCH THING in the eyes of the universe. Where one person succeeds, another fails. That’s the honest truth. “There are people who have it much worse than Adachi and many of those people don’t wallow in self-pity.” What makes you think what he’s experiencing is self-pity? To me, it seems more like frustration with the world and the way it operates to favor certain people over other. He understands more than anyone that he has put forth every ounce of effort he could muster into his work and the world continues to punish him for it. It’s a proven concept: Good people trying to do the right thing get punished more than the bad people who will do anything to survive. I’ll be honest. It’s pretty annoying when someone writes off someone as in-depth and complex as Adachi was as some angsty, whiny teenager, especially if they played the series or watched the show or even watched this video. It’s just another example of how when someone doesn’t understand something, they write it off as something else like it’s meaningless, the main idea behind it completely going over their heads. That’s entirely like disregarding all the hard work a person put into making something amazing with a “He’s so edgy and whiny” and I think it’s naive to think that way, to say the very least.

Adachi is 27 according towards the wikipedia on Persona 4. This man has a decade of experience in the real world where his credentials (best of the best) landed him in some small town out in the boonies where there is barely nothing to do and his pay rate reduces him towards buying cabbage a lot. Not only that, but his rare moments of approaching single women have brought him misfortune. Of course, he'll flip out like this. His actions have not brought him the results he wanted and I sympathize with that. Almost 5 years outta high school and I realized my actions have not brought me the results that I WANTED. a part time job that pays me a wage that hasn't kept up with inflation and going to school which has an extremely high tuition that leads millions of people into debt which they can't pay off on stagnant wages. And don't get me started on the dating/hookup scene. Adachi was right, this world truly sucks ass. A group of teenagers in high school (a pop star, a detective, a son of a department manager, daughter of a family that runs a hotel,) do not know jack shit about how one really needs an unique talent skill that's above the regular people to pursue success. One thing I like about Persona is that these games are above the regular JRPG genre of "save the world from horrible monster". The games make one think about life itself how its everything is not as it seems. Adachi & the investigation team are just people with differing views and that's how conflict arises because of one believing that they are right and the other is wrong. And of course the boss fight wouldn't be too hard when Adachi is by himself. Same thing with the real world. If one complains about his/her problems, it is always their fault. Its never the system's fault.

The biggest problem I have with this scene is not that I think Adachi is ''right''. He clearly needed to be stopped, he had no justification for what he did and he needed to be put down. The issue I have with this scene is that I don't feel like the ''good guys'' really gave him proper responses to what he said. Feels like they were talking about other stuff, basically Adachi ''This is why the world sucks(explains)'' , and anyone on the team basically responds with ''STFU DUMBASS LIFE IS HARD BUT YOU'RE STILL DUMB''. Seriously, look at every reply they give, 90% of them are saying ''NU UH, FUCKER''. Naoto was the only one who said anything worth actually reading as a proper response. I understand the team had every right to basically shout at him after he caused so much trouble, but it feels like the writers shifted the tone to imply that Adachi had lost the argument and just devolved into yelling and being angry, when in truth nothing he actually ever said was contradicted or even challenged at all, which sort of broke my immersion in the scene...just kinda left me scratching my head.

Adachi is a victim of circumstances, he is the reversed Fool. He represents coming to term with reality as an adult. He represents the cruel reality the cast faces when they are coming to adulthood. Even in the anime, at the last episode, Yu straight out admits that given the chance, he will toss out reality out the window for a blissful illusion. That's what makes the game so genius. The only reason they pulled off all those heists was because there was literally no one else stop the palace rulers from ruining other people’s lives there was literally a full blown CONSPIRACY in the legal and political systems. And even in the end they acknowledged that they have to let mankind face it’s problems on it’s own because they were causing society to just rely on the phantom thieves to fix their problems for them. Adachi literally murdered 2 people because they rejected his advances on them. He indirectly almost murdered more people if the investigation team didn’t step in and save them and stop namatame. True. There is alot of factors that affect your view on life. My point exactly. The IT don't like Adachi because he uses these points to justify his actions and that Adachi makes innocent people scapegoats and kills them for the things he did. Which did make him look like a "brat that was throwing a tantrum when things don't get his way". Bottom line is, although Adachi does tell the truth, it doesn't justify his actions which is why the IT came to stop them. ATLUS made sure of that, at least.

This is still to this day a masterpiece of writing. Neither side is right because despite speaking directly to one another they can’t understand a single thing about each other. Life has beaten adachi down into jaded sociopath, and when he tries to explain this very fact, the group just call him a monster and ignores his suffering deeming it a weak excuse, but in turn Adachi calls out the naïveté of their every word and rationale. It doesnt make him right, but it hammers in how the IT while only having the best of intentions are just a bunch of naive, idealistic kids. They’re just as Adachi says, with the sole exception being Yu, who reaches out to everyone no matter what and BECAUSE he sees their struggles, and Naoto who’s the most logical and had the closest experiences to Adachi himself. It’s not a matter of if Adachi or the IT are right, it’s a matter of “to what degree do you the player end up finding *yourself* understanding Adachi? And what does that say about you...?”

He has a negative outlook which makes everything negative when it's at his extreme. Especially when he listened to his parents and for-went connections to get a position that was almost just as quickly taken from him. He probably started to ask himself why any of it even matters. That nothing will ever change. ""What did I do to deserve this??"" Adachi is a character you don't want to relate to, you wish you didn't relate to, but you do. You wish you didn't have anything in common with a person who murdered two women, but you do. Adachi's just a normal guy. He's not overtly creepy like Mitsuo, or utterly delusional like Namatame. Those are the sorts of people we'd like to believe are murderers. Those people look like murderers and sound like them. Adachi doesn't, he seems like the sort of guy you'd go drinking with or play some games. And he is that, he is a normal guy. Some part of the way Adachi acts for most of the game is a facade, but some of it is genuine. He really is just an average Joe trying to make it through the hell that is adult life one day at a time. And he's also a murderer. The idea that a normal person, someone just like us, is capable of such heinous things if pushed to the limit, is scary. It's a reminder to nurture your soul rather than neglecting it, like Adachi did. A lot of what Adachi's saying here is true, but it's a pretty bleak and unproductive way to look at life. Even if optimism is stupid, it may lead you down a better path than the one Adachi chose to walk.

In many ways, Adachi feels like the mirror of Raskonikolv from Crime and Punishment. Both of them murdered two people, both of them were talented and worked hard on their education, and both believed (simplifying a bit) that they deserved better. Yet, they are quite different too. Ras feels guilty, and outside of his murders, does mostly good things, and turns himself in. He also has a good support network with his friends and family, who, despite their poverty, help him even in tough times. Adachi is far more isolated, and even beyond his murders, does not do many good things. I wonder if the developers used Dostovesky as a writing inspiration.

Look, Adachi's backstory - however 'tragic' - isn't a defence for his crimes by ANY means. It does nothing to reduce his guilt, or you'd have judges showing sympathy to people like the Columbine killers. While the investigation team doesn't debate Adachi here, they did that in the bedroom confrontation. We already know by this point it's just a game for him; nothing can justify that. @@Newbturgangur865 I think there’s a good middle ground to be found amongst the two sides of this argument. I find that those saying that adachi is making completely rational arguments and the investigation team are just stupid kids are being ultra edgelords. The reason adachi is a great villain is not because his actions are justifiable by any means, because they’re too vile to justify. But it’s because many people can relate to his struggles to some extent. He didn’t have some cinematically cliched tragic backstory. He was just a lonely person who never got to socialize with people or enjoy life, which makes him extremely bitter towards those who have any joy. The reason Adachi developed a very misanthropic and nihilistic view on life because he was tired of the bullshit average people like him have to face all the time. He absolutely hates everything and sees no value in human life, and this causes him to find entertainment in killing and manipulating. He’s horrible, but the reasons behind it are understandable. I feel many people have gone through rough periods in their lives where they’re sick of everything and dissatisfied with life or have nobody who will truly listen to them. The difference is that these people save themselves by finding something to live for. Adachi could not, and it lead to his destruction. All that said though, there’s no point having a logical debate with a psychopathic serial killer. You’ve won just by virtue of being the better people. No amount of logic can make adachi the winner in this situation.

I wanted his fight to be the hardest fight in the game oh well. I’ll just keep my theory that he was holding back and didn’t wanna kill the kids.

For me Adachi is the greatest character in persona history. He is just fascinating I don’t think he is right even if he had a point about « the world sucks ass » and in the other scenes he has just my favorite sentence in all persona « because I could. Cause it was fun » he is broken and profoundly crazy. When he is Savage it’s so much fun. He has this superiority complex that is just so damn good. And in arena ultimax he has some good development. He truly hates this world and is just fucking awesome at it

lol. Some of Yukiko's, Adachi's Naoto's words hit me on the spot. XD Well I am a little messed up afterall but that doesn't mean I want a world like that. Humanity will be the same as before when we were still evolving.

I agree with him to an extend. I don't really care what he did as a criminal, if his idea is sound, they are sound. With that said the investigation team didn't even come up with a counter argument but just shouted ridiculous insults at him. This game is certainly deeper than the rest but it is still a video game, and so the writers can't really put in a sophisticated debate. It's a shame too because I got the feeling that the writers really did want to explore Adachi's ideal deeper.

When I was running through Magatsu Mandala for the first time I thought maybe Nyarlathotep would make a come back through Adachi as his shadow or Persona, but not yet. Would have been fitting.

I'll have to do Adachi for a course, tell all his lines to 2:33 , without any image,sound or script... But just thinking about "dubbing" Adachi is enough to give me courage '^'

ok that's funny but Nietzche actually was an active Nihilist and was against passive Nihilism which is what Adachi is

In the anime they had a better counterpoints to Adashi's argument oddly enough. But I think by this point the game creators were trying to move things along and decided they didn't need to make this into a full scale philosophical argument.
