One of the most overlooked differences was that in the original P4 there was a save point at the top floor of every dungeon, while in Golden you're forced to use a Goho-M if u want to do this

Damn, I just started playing Golden not too long ago, and shuffle time feels like an upgrade compared to Persona 3 shuffle time, I find it weird it wasn’t like this in the vanilla version of Persona 4

vanilla P4 was a fun ass game on PS2. Playing it before Golden made me appreciate the positive changes Golden made but also highlighted how they made the game way too easy in the new version.

Shuffle Time in Golden is the reason I plan on returning to the game. It made creating powerful personas a lot easier for me

As a guy who only played Persona 4 OG, I sometimes wish to have played Golden first. It's tiring to wait until I forget all of the details about this game to play the Golden and to die from the exhaustion of waiting to see the new characters of Golden.

Lets not forget that Golden added "Time to Make History" in place of "Reach out to the Truth" for battle music when you surprise shadows.

I really like that Golden has a social link for Adachi. It made him stick out less than he did in the original.

While I appreciate all the extra stuff that Golden adds, there's something about specifically how boring Inaba actually is in P4 that really sells itself as an accurate descriptor. Yukiko, Adachi, Yosuke and Nanako are all characters who specifically have parts of them tied to the fact that the only interesting thing to do around Inaba is go to Junes. But that sort of falls apart in Golden when Okina City is added as a location that you can visit on any day you want or the fact the protagonists don't have to go too far to go on a fun skiing trip.

The Intro and title screen are far better in the original in my opinion. I also remember the fishing minigame being better in the original, in my opinion. I don't know if adult me agrees with that. One of the funniest improvements to me is that in the original P4, the first party member skill for getting social link rank 1 was "they will now take a mortal blow for you once per battle!" Like they just met this guy and now they'll literally die for him!

The balance in P4G is for the best but P4 (ps2) had such a good environment and atmosphere golden is so bright and poppy and it kinda kills the dying town vibe not that p4 wasn't poppy but in P4G it does kill the immersion at least for me

Having played the original and then Golden after the latter got ported to Switch, hands down Golden is the overall beeter experience. The only gripe that I have with Golden personally is Chie's recast in the English dub. I know people didn't like Tracey Rooney's performance, but it grew on me when I played it back on Ps2. Still my go to character to romance regardless of what she sounds like!

Spoilers ahead. As someone who played both, OG P4 was brutal compared to golden. First dungeon had extremely difficult enemies, the fake killer's boss fight was unreasonably difficult and 2 phase boss fights like Rise/Teddy and true killer/ameno-sagiri didn't heal you between phase changes so you had to go into the second boss fight with your current health and SP

The original persona 4 also had those weird floating ball looking shadow monsters when outside of battle

It also has the jester Arcana path where you interact with Adachi. That also means the secret dungeon that you can only enter if you max out Maria, And of course, the secret final dungeon that only happens if you max out Adachi, which leads to the antagonist of the entire game. So yeah, I’m pretty sure there’s more than just the Maria character added into the game.

golden is definitely better but I still recommend people play the original first, it'll give you an excuse to replay later on and appreciate all the changes. but if you only plan on playing once, there is really no competition: golden by a mile

I have a switch, so my introduction to it was Golden. It took me until Kanji came into the story to really get into it but once he did I kept getting more and more intrigued. Before I knew it, it was one of my all time favorites.

So this is a sonic adventure dx situation but not as bad

P4G cause you get more Adachi

P4 original will always be my preferred because of the overall aesthetic and focus on what made the story stand out compared to other RPGs in Atlus' catalogue.

For finding a hint to Kanji, the og version had you talk to a little kid but golden has u give a description of him. This drove me insane for a while

P4G has the same and some better assets than P4 they only messed up with some textures. They also reduced the fog (too much and sometimes removed it) and removed some UI&Screen&Colors elements (probably for visibility on the PS Vita small screen ?). They also removed some gameplay elements like Floating shadows. Don't forget that P4G is technically a remake and not a port, they only reused assets, this may also explain why some elements were removed/added/changed. I personally think that when most of the balancing changes were good some of them were unbalanced (WTF they did to Naoto Skills ? Why some shadows have so many weaknesses now ?), but yes Golden is easier but still has some challenge and is not boring easy like P5R. Compared with P3 to P3Fes and P5 to P5R, if you don't go for the Golden ending Marie doesn't feel as forced as Sumi and you will play an upgraded P4 like Fes was, if you go for the Golden ending Marie is even more forced than Sumi. And P4 opening is way better and doesn't spoil anything.

In terms of gameplay and QOL additions, easily Golden. But in terms of story, ambiance, setting and pacing, I think OG P4 still wins. I don't really enjoy ATLUS re-releases all that much just because they always feel like they HAVE to insert new things to incentivize old players to double-dip. But the thing is that the director of the original games, Katsura Hashino (who _never_ directs the re-releases) is _extremely careful with the way the way he makes games. The story, pacing and ambiance are all impeccably crafted, and more often than not, the additions made by the re-releases kind of ruin that. TBH, I kinda wish there was a mix of original P4 and Golden, where you had every QOL and gameplay addition of Golden (namely, the new shuffle time, selective skill inheritance, skill cards, custom rearranging of skills, the added voiced dialogue, chat history and skippable cutscenes) but still kept every story beat and social link just the same as in the original (meaning, same OP, same menu, and NO Marie).

I liked the harder bosses in og. Love the card shiffle system in golden. Miss Chie's old voice from og.

While I can see why some prefer the original, I think the added content is better, the only one that feels out of place is the band, but January is so pivotal that I can't imagine skipping past it, it serves as both a reward, and the tone definitely needs it, the whole experience of letting you do whatever you want, and how the framing of yu making the last memories with his friends before the montages makes it feel like a needed part of the game

People overlook just how much better persona 4 ps2 look, Golden is just flat. Ps2 has way more atmospheric effects, more dense natural environments and the list goes on.I guess the fog effects were lost during the Renderware to Persona 3 portable engine transition.

Played both and the biggest take away was that you get better bonuses from staying and fighting longer as you the shuffle time pays out more and more the longer you are in and collect

I pick Golden, obviously. I even bought this game on Switch for my birthday and it's one hell of a fun game.

I remember mangakamen actually did a video about this. I believe he said something along the lines that the new story bits added in p4g kinda screws up the original story? I don't know Imm gonna rewatch that. I do know that persona 4 golden was my first persona game. However I never got to finish it. I think I got to the steam bath dungeon before my whole memory card got corrupted. Sometime later I managed to get though the second dungeon before my memory card got completely corrupted again. All because I had a 32g memory card (turns out the higher the memory the higher the chance of corruption) almost broke my psvita in half. Luckily I now have an SD2VITA, with not only persona 4 golden, but persona 1, persona 2 innocent sin, persona 2 eternal punishment (just recently translated so the psp version is now easily playable with all the bells and whistles added instead of the ps1 version) and persona 3 portable (I also downloaded the original persona 3 and fes on my laptop to give them a try). I've played more of the megaten (aka shin megami tensei which is what persona is a spinoff from) games since then. My first being devil survivor overclocked for 3DS.

Golden all the way. I couldn't even get through f*cking Shadow Yukiko without having a very specific persona who had healing something on him. This was before Golden was released on PC and I was emulating the vanilla p4. I reached up until the world that looks like a game then gave up because no matter how much you grind, the bosses would definitely mess you up on your first try. In Golden, I pretty much got through the whole game with moderate difficulty (grinding the dungeons makes the game really smoother in Golden) and overall there was a lot of new elements added that made the game more enjoyable. The shuffle time is a good example as well.

I played golden without getting spoiled and the final part of the game absolutely blew me away

Honestly my first introduction to the series was persona 4 golden on the ps vita and I put in 230 hours on one save file and after golden I fell I love with the series and while people don't like it I love that this was what Introunced be to the world of persona.

Still to this day, I haven't beaten p4. And yet, I've completed Golden and am currently in the middle of completing a second playthrough. Golden just clicked far more with me with all the added improvements (especially with both the shuffle time streaks and the kaiwan skill change glitch).

It’s crazy how P4G was the first game to add manual skill inheritance, which would be a staple for every future game going forward (outside of the P3P port, which didn’t add it for some bizarre reason.)

I imported the original one on PS2 from the US and finished it a few years ago. I enjoyed it, and don't understand the need for Golden. But appreciate it's playable on the latest hardware!
