He figured out Joker and Futaba were Phantom Thieves, which is impressive in itself, but we still had many tricks up our sleeves, too many for him to find out! I think the main trigger is that you need to hear Mona in the Metaverse before you can hear him in the real world. Though that means either there's a plot hole with Akechi, or he was already spying on the Phantom Thieves early on and had seen Mona talk before the pancakes scene.

^ Sae never heard Morgana talk or saw him in the metaverse, so she remains unable to understand him. In addition, Sae wasn’t even in the metaverse for very long, so there was almost no chance of her being exposed to anything that would make her “more open” to the possibility of animals talking (i.e. any shadow). Akechi on the other hand HAS been running around the metaverse, and has probably encountered enough shadows for his cognition to be open to Morgana’s speech - not to mention any possible spying he did on them beforehand, which he was likely fully equipped to do.

When would he have gotten the chance to? Given akechi’s true nature he would have just killed morgana there and remember morgana got captured by Kamoshida and he is no where near as smart of strong as akechi

@@goodthanos9435 I mean, Akechi would have started looking into things when the news about Kamoshida spread beyond Shujin. At which point, Morgana was hanging around MC, Ann, and Ryuji most of the time. Akechi also isn't the type to randomly murder someone on the spot just because. He's borderline insane, but he's not that kind of insane (not until close to the end, at least). Shadow Madarame is the first to mention someone with a black mask, but that doesn't mean that Akechi hadn't already been looking into the phantom thieves by then. It's an easy enough conclusion to make at that point that the phantom thieves are a potentially troublesome element, but not one that required him to deal with them directly. So he reported his findings to Shido and the SIU director, and they formulated a plan to have the phantom thieves effectively offer themselves up to be eliminated - the leader (who akechi would recognize as the most powerful) first, then the other, weaker members later on when they had no one to lead them.
