@Firion316
@Firion316 7 жыл бұрын
The game is quite polished. But the story doesn't really hold up after the halfway mark. One you pass the pyramid, you can almost feel the developers forcing the plot into rails so they can finally start moving toward the climax and final battle. Even the villians sort of fall flat after the castle. The first boss you actually got the chance to see for your self just how much of a doucebag he was (and even experience some of his abuse for yourself). After that, it was more of people reminding you over and over that "this asshole is a terrible person because reasons".
@Eclypsia13
@Eclypsia13 7 жыл бұрын
To be fair, if your talking about the boss directly after the pyramid, what else could they of really done for him? The previous bosses work due to their direct effect on the characters, after that they keep aiming for grander people that they don't have all the information on, which is part of the whole idea is that they grew to big for themselves and their opponents capitalized on that to make sure they did what they wanted them to. The final boss was a bit of a curve ball I grant you, but it still held up narratively.

Nothing wrong with us weirdos. The song is just catchy to us, and it plays in our heads over and over whenever a free non-thinking moment occurs. So we play it on an endless loop for about 2 weeks before we finally get burned out on it and shuffle it into the normal playlist. If we don't do this, the song remains stuck in our heads. Also there is more than 1 standard battle song, and the negotiation system is defined by the demons personality which the game gives you so it's not as random as he made it sound
@danime91
@danime91 6 жыл бұрын
Ultimate Despair Gamer it's a bit exacerbated by the fact that the English translation of the negotiation choices is a bit stilted and loses a lot of context. In the original Japanese it's a lot easier to guess which reply goes to which personality type.
@tcoren1
@tcoren1 6 жыл бұрын
Ultimate Despair Gamer I honestly usually got by without checking the personality, just guessing the appropriate response based on the shadow’s speech patterns. Although i do have some experience with it since i played quite a bit of SMT strange journey. Obaryon really messed my up though, until i checked in the tutorial what kind of answers irritable shadows want. His speech patterns and him being a “kid” shadow made me think he would appreciate joking, tongue in cheek answers, but he prefers serious ones.

From the end credits (which are still on the Escapist website's version of the video): "I guess the anime faces are a bit generic; there's one bit where a character turns around and we're supposed to be surprised by who it is but I couldn't tell who the fuck it was supposed to be because they changed their hairdo"
@android19willpwn
@android19willpwn 7 жыл бұрын
I actually found Persona to be pretty good about differentiating their characters' faces without relying on hair, but maybe I just think that because I'm too used to other anime/Japanese games where they basically don't do that at all.
@1Diddums

I think Persona is one of the better animes for that. As someone who habitually draws, I can say that face shape is a bitch to get right. .....But then again, Yosuke from P4 is supposed to be the pretty boy, and we can tell by the shape of his nose? Apparently? I read that in an official book published, but I couldn't tell.
@1Diddums
@1Diddums 7 жыл бұрын
Could you elaborate on what's difficult about face shape? I hear good things about how the characters in these games are handled when it comes to interaction and personalities, but I cannot bring myself to stay invested in a cast where the majority of them are palette swaps of each other. Kanji comes to mind when I think of the good, unique designs.
@TheBlueLink3
@TheBlueLink3 7 жыл бұрын
Most Valuable Pig I'm going to have to disagree with you on that. I don't think the characters look like pallet swaps of each other. I've seen Persona 3,4,Q, and most of 5, and I have to say that each character looks very different from each other. Maybe it's because I focus on everything in a character besides just the face, so I'm not paying the most attention to that aspect, but I think every character has a distinct look (aside from background characters). I'll give you some leeway with Q, but that's about it. Also, I don't watch that much Anime or things like it (though I will admit a decent amount), so I don't think I've been desensitized to the art style.

In regards to demon recruitment dialogue seeming random, their nature (listed when you target them) determines what responses they want. Gloomy: Vague, apathetic Irritable: Negative, confrontational Upbeat: Positive, whimsical Timid: Vague, encouraging (but its better to just beat timid demons up) I think the game mentions this at some point.

yahtzee's definitely hit the nail on the head with "absorbing". im a huge jrpg fan but i can still only play 3, 4 hours at a time with most games. persona games i can play for literally 8-12 hours straight every day (which i did with 5, completing it after a two week cycle and a 103 hour total playtime). the life simulator and rpg elements actually balance out fairly well time-wise, so you can go between those aspects and never feel like you're getting too saturated with only doing one thing. as strange a concept as it is, it works.

The problem with those games, is that their stories and characters just aren't that good. Seriously, I've seen way more people praise XC 1 over X. And that's understandable. I'm also not a big fan of FF XV's gameplay. I'm glad Person 5 sticks to its gun and adds something new.

Crono Yeah, the first Xenoblade is so good... X disappointed me a lot and felt very overwhelming. Final Fantasy XV was disappointing as well; the combat was so simple and kind of boring. The story isn't that interesting either.
@raditzace
@raditzace 4 жыл бұрын
@@All_Ice117 overwhelming or underwhelming? Overwhelming meant there was too much of something (besides the disappointment). Xcx played more like an MMO than xc1 or 2. Those had story points that controlled what you could explore (can't explore this titan until you completd this story mission). XCX was meant to be exploring and researching a new planet, very different game type and world from the others

In terms of story, this is the best JRPG I've ever played. Games like Tales of Vesperia and Eternal Sonata were fun, but there's just too much grinding they force you to do, and the story line takes far too long to progress relative to the number of battles you have to win. What's more, the enemies in those games either fall over with the flick of a finger or absolutely destroy you before you know what the fuck. Probably the biggest achievement of Persona 5 is that it has a battle system that allows the player to grind and rout as many weak enemies as he or she wants to, but the nature of the Palaces turns it into a war of attrition, so you have to be careful not to overdo it or you'll never survive the final boss fight. The bosses are challenging, the voice acting is top-notch, the artwork is beautiful, and for a modern video game, it has a very original concept.

Yahtzee, the reason I know you've never played a Persona game is because this review might as well be a review for ANY Persona game (well, at least 3 and 4). And so it's so much fun to see your perspective from a series we've all played and all of us knowing EXACTLY what you're criticizing, complimenting, etc. And the reason that makes all the fans KNOW we'll like it: because you're review comforts us into learning that Persona is INDEED still Persona. And really that's kind of all we want. But seriously, it's like watching someone playing Pokemon for the first time and complaining about the caves and the weird combat system rules. Makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

The demon negotiation does have dialog that suits each demon based on their personality, but it's not too had to get them to join you anyway, especially with character abilities that add to that. It's no where near RNG that SMT can be when it comes to recruiting demons thankfully. Do agree on the "Days to complete mission" thing. I'd rather it just tell me the date up to the deadline of when I can send the calling card but I get why they do it as is. I think in regards to the time slots, I think part of why you spent all of that slot doing that one thing is because it's meant to treat your wandering around and then spending time as the whole slot, just in a very simplified form which looks a bit off when you look deeply into it. It's basically what happens when you implement time slot progression over real time progression I suppose. Atlus are not that subtle with their symbolism usually, they do have some subtle bits here and there in it as well but they are well known to sledgehammer their messages in which can be a mixed reception kind of thing. I personally prefer it because I don't care for overly vague symbolism but you can easily argue they try too hard with it. The string of story progression during events like the dungeon completion did surprise me as well. When the plot does get moving, it tends to railroad you more than previous ones I feel, not that it's a bad thing though as the story was interesting enough to where I wanted to keep seeing that progression. But it does make the game feel tightly packed on your first playthrough. Also I'm surprised Yatzhee actually liked this game, let alone reviewed it but it was an interesting and amusing watch as always.

Pelcogo Really? Only 4? But like 4 of the characters alone get maxed via story progression. I had honestly managed to get almost every single one maxed by the point of no return. And like 2 others will level up any time you hang out every time, never needing side activities. I knew getting all of them before new game plus would be impossible but was pleasantly surprised by how many I got. Most the ones I did fail to max was only because they were late-game additions or had ridiculous requirements (Iwai needing near max guts to even start. Futaba needing near max kindness to start. Haru needing complete max proficiency to continue past level one. Hifumi needing max knowledge near the end). And I went for too many at a time too. I'm pretty sure I activated every one, even if some never made it past rank 3-4.

And then factor in the size of the dev team - Atlus only have around 200 staff. Compare that with 800 at Bioware, and 3,000 at Square Enix. I'm glad Atlus are getting exposure, they're an incredible developer. I hope the success of p5 allows them to recruit more staff. It's hard to tell. Atlus USA is owned by SEGA (which might explain the release of Persona Dancing All Night), and more than a few AAA games have been ruined by executive meddling with newly acquired franchises. Persona 5 feels like it had to make concessions to break out of the niche market and appeal to the larger gaming crowd, and certain parts of the story feel very rushed. Not to say that this is a bad game, but compared to P3 and P4, some parts just don't have the same polish. I guess we'll have to wait for Persona 6 to figure out if this was just a fluke, or if the series is going to start going the way of TH4IF. I really hope not..

Basically every mechanical problem that Yahtzee points out is improved on IMO, and even some of the story problems (specifically villains with no nuance to them) although because the new story stuff is at the very end of Persona 5 Royal your proverbial 'Scooby Gang' does have to run through the full cast of Scooby Doo-tier villains still to GET to the interesting and deep villain in P5R.

"Putting together a Scooby gang..." Wait, I'm confused, I thought Persona 4 was the one where you solve a murder mystery...

The way you actually romance the personas is to be like them, that is to say, be like their personality. If you see a persona has the gloomy personality, act gloomy at them and they'll relate to you and join you.

huh, im surprised he liked it, you could say i never saw it coming. also the morality of what your doing starts getting called into question at around the half way point of the game, but i dont hold it over Yahtzee for not getting that far within his review window.

As much as I love persona I completely agree about how un-subtle P5 is, especially the main antagonist

Didn't max out any relationships? If you do it with team members they gain a new persona and give you access to special fusions. Plus you get to spend time with them on vacation and holidays where they give you special items. NG+ is supposed to carry over all your social links to make maxing all relationships easy.

He found some combination of characters and story engaging enough to keep playing it. That's the gist.

so happy to see you do this! btw, for anyone playing the game, they hid a recruitment explanation in the tutorials. it becomes stupid easy to recruit, but they never bother to tell you it's there :P
