It’s really too bad that Hollywood won’t make movies like this anymore. It’s a shame.

I think films maybe get labelled as a gay film, as though that's a genera, some people don't know what to make of a movie like Brokeback Mountain or Carol and think it's all the same, or it was just made for a certain subset of the movie going audience.

I really love how matter-of-factly the movie treats Chris' bisexuality and her relationship with Tori. It could've been released this year

Muriel Hemingway was pretty good in this. She had that natural innocence as if she did not play a character.

remember when movies had dialog ? Now 90% of what we have is dumbed-down dialog and drawn out shaky action scenes that translates well for the Chinese market.

Generally yeah but there's still great films getting made too. Last year CODA won best picture, just a sweet family drama of a girl who wants to sing and dealing with having a deaf family. I've been a bit disappointed last 5 years with oscar nominated films but last year was better again, Belfast was pretty good, that was most dialogue, same for Dune, very slow paced and restrained. Problem more is the highest grossing films are the loud, dumb, violent, popcorn films, mostly superheroes, marketed to that 12A audience to try and capture a wide an audience as possible. The big hitters last couple of years, were spiderman, James Bond, batman, jurassic Park sequel, black panther, Dr strange, thor sequel.... I can't picture a film like raging bull being a bit hit now in 2022, never mind even being made. The films that flop though can differ a lot, you get simple crowd popcorn entertainment like the Buzzlightyear or Moonfall that totally bomb, but then you also get a serious drama like She Said which is also bombing....

These might have been good points if this was still 2005. I guess once you get used to writing off "today''s" media, no need to think about why.

I’ve just watched this film and I’ve got to say it was well crafted. The relationship between the both was complicated and I wished they had gotten back together in the end. The camera angles and shots were great it showed the effortless movements of the athletes.

Good film. By the time you get to the tournament at the end you actually care about the characters and what happens to them.

Funny story, well, NOW. . . So ,growing up and knowing i was gay really early on, like i'd say all young LGBTQ+ people, i was desperate to see images of myself -- or those like myself -- that represented us, and that told me who i was, and who people would think of us as. . . . . Growing up in a large midwestern city in suburbia, i had access to the huge cineplexes, and my older brother and i would often be dropped off at the movie theater and picked up hours later, when we'd call home. We were little thieves, sneaking in-and-out of movie theaters, and were easily able to see three movies on the one ticket. . (can you guess where this is going?) . . .So, being both precocious and smart, over-exposed and infinitely curious, little gay Catholic-school-boy-me would use that opportunity to go see LGBT movies, which, more accurately, were often movies with maybe one LFBT character, and who'd be the butt of the joke (gay pun there, sorry), or only referred to distantly. ................I snuck into movies like " MAKING LOVE", and picked-up on the gay-ish-ness of C3PO, and I'm sort of both sad and happy "CRUISING" wasn't in the Cineplex offerings. ............ So, i snuck into PERSONAL BEST, and it felt safe, and seeing lesbian-related material always has bene for both young gays and for straight people: straight men -who Hollywood was directed by, so to speak, had women-with-women not threatening to straight men, but titillating- (sorry, pun again), women not threatened or angered by it, and gay and bi and trans folks, esp male-identifying or appearing, to be associated wth homosexuality, despite being interested in the depiction of it. ............ So, I'll l wrap this up: i left whatever movie i was seeing with my brother, snuck into PERSONAL BEST, and was kicked out by an usher who kind of scolded me and sent me outside into the main lobby, where i waited for my bother to eventually show up and we'd call our Mom and she'd come get us. I remember seeing the lesbian sex scene too, and noticing how small and perky Hemmingway's breasts were, and shocked when the camera panned down and showed explicitly the public hair and her hand running thru it. I remember also STARING at the group of mostly women walking out of the theater, and making eye contact with some, they must have been thinking i was looking at them with shock, even disgust, but wide-eyed, certainly. I saw a couple gay guys with them too, which made me feel hopeful and connected. Representation and visibility matters, and esp to those who are not accessible to it.

Siskel and Ebert must have been stoned when they watched this movie because it has to be one of the worst movies of all time. Terrible acting, terrible script, the blatant use of a lesbian relationship to draw an audience (as opposed to something more realistic like the Alberto Salazar-Mary Cane eating disorder situation, since that is only going to make people sad as opposed to titilating them) and a plot which makes almost everyone in the film other than Kenny Moore’s character look like a terrible person. And then top that with the “let me hold it while you pee” scene, one of the most cringe-worthy scenes of all time. Even the nudity makes me think that Robert Towne hated women. Anyone who has been in a locker room filled with world-class female athletes knows that they look nothing like the women in that locker room scene. This entire movie is insulting to women and athletes. Gee, what were these two reviewers thinking? If Siskel and Ebert were still alive, 38 years later they’d probably be trashing the movie in a book entitled, “Okay, I Was Wrong.”

Siskel and Ebert must have been stoned when they watched this. This has to be one of the top ten worst movies of all time. The acting is terrible and there is only 20 minutes of a movie here. The rest is just padding and those scenes could be rearanged and it would make no difference. As someone who was once a decent runner--I was never going to make it to the Olymipics but I was good enough to be badly beaten by people who would--I find the message that as soon as a track meet is over the athletes all start smoking weed. I don't expect the movies I see to be completely realistic, but I can tell you that how they show national class runners training is way off of reality.

In the early 70s I qualified for the NCAA track meet in the 3 mile. The meet was in Austin. There were about five of us from my team who qualified that year. The others were sprinters and a triple jumper. For some reason my coach trusted me to drive the team home while he stayed in Austin. So when competition was over I was driving the five of us home up I35 going about 85 when I smelled the weed wafting from the back of the van. Needless to say, I was a bit irritated that they were smoking that stuff when I was speeding. Don't be too sure athletes don't smoke that stuff between competitions. I never did but I knew plenty who did. It's been a long time since I saw this movie but as I recall they got a lot of the athletics right.
