Hello to everyone who's subscribed since the last series and has absolutely no idea what's going on. Three shows, over three Thursdays: one about skill, one about mental agility, and one plain old-fashioned quiz. Back to the Garage we go.

@@cartoonishidealism582 Even if the production values are comparatively low (what really costs money is live sports broadcasting, or news) they can afford a cash price (or even better a sponsored price) of a million dollars per hour because the studio and the people around costs more than that anyway. And the contestants are not really paid unless they win. A talk show with invited guests the guest either have something to sell, or they will require money to be there, and that is a lot of money for a well known face.

@jpe1
@jpe1 5 жыл бұрын
SECONDQUEST wait, what? The purpose is to be a “fun game”‽ I thought the purpose was to be compelling content that lots and lots of people watch, like, and share. The audience might have fun watching, and certainly the contestants appearing to have fun while playing can help with the objective as stated, but fun is only relevant to the degree that fun (or lack thereof) increases audience engagement. I would be quite curious to see if an episode of “game garage” where the contestants broke the game (such as by colluding to get the 100£) might actually get much higher engagement precisely because of it being a kind of “fail.” Would depend very much on how Tom handled it I suspect.
@pickle5666
@pickle5666 5 жыл бұрын
There was actually a case during the game show "golden balls" where a similar situation happened... The scenario is that two contestants have the a prize pool of about £20,000 (give or take based on what happened in the show) and have two options they can pick in secret. Split or Steal. If both contestants split, the money is split 50/50 If one contestant splits and the other steals, the stealer take all And if both steal they both walk away with nothing The contestants are given a minute to discuss with each other. In one infamous case one contestant opens discussion with "I am going to steal, you cannot change my mind, you choose split and we will meet up after the show and share the cash." I won't spoil the ending but the episode is on KZfaq somewhere but since I am on iPad I can't link it.

This game really needs for the players to be unable to see the clock. Originally, I thought it was poor game design, that the players would just wait out their personal best each time, lowering stakes. However, since they can't see the clock, having the players either wait to give themselves more time or shorting themselves of precious seconds becomes a really captivating dynamic.

Cooldrew100 PAL is better in theory. However, in absence of perfect textbox mashing, you tend to save more time in the Japanese version, due to just how dialogue-heavy the route is. As Tom is certainly not a TAS, and coupled with the more finicky inputs (leading to dropping human inputs more often), Japanese is favorable. Yes, an extremely skilled runner could force the WR below the limits of the Japanese version, but it’s equally likely, if not more so, that new skips and exploits are discovered in favor of the Japanese version (given the small community of runners, that is).
